1952 Santa Cruz, California "Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Bohl and daughters,
Carol and Marilyn, and C. A. Bohl, all of Canon City, Colo.,
arrived here Friday evening to spend a few days with Mrs. Emma Bohl and daughter,
Irene, of 225 Third avenue."
1973 Greeley, Colorado "Mrs. C. A Bohl sewed ...and crocheted the above articles at the turn of the centuT .. They were sent to "Ellee" by Mrs. Bohl's daughter, Eva Bohl ..Srmth (Mrs. E. Wayne Smith of Portland, Ore.) formerly of ., Greeley."
Mrs. C. A. (Emma) Bohl who, at age 97, is at present residing with a daughter
in San Diego, Calif., while recovering from a hip fracture. Another daughter,
Mrs. E. Wayne (Eva) Smith of Portland, Ore., a former Greeley resident,
was kind enough to relate her personal background as the daughter of a
pioneer woman at the turn of the century. Mrs. Smith sent us the household linens,
made by her mother, that have been used but taken care of all these many years
and are still beautiful.
"I can give a very brief family information which may help in describing
and placing the articles," Mrs. Smith wrote. "My parents, C. A. and Emma Bohl,
trekked in a covered wagon from western Nebraska to eastern Colorado when land was
opened for homesteads in 190?. Their farm was located in Kit Carson County adjacent
to large cattle ranches on the South Fork of the Republican River.
We experienced a kind of pioneer life around the well and windmill until fences
and buildings were built with the help of neighboring homesteaders.
"Because of the diligence of our mother and her interest in finer things,
our home seemed more complete and tastefully furnished than those of our neighbors.
Mother knew where to send for newspapers, books, cloth and thread.
Besides sewing most of our clothing, she took time to make fancy things for our home.
"When we older children were ready for high school, the family returned to Nebraska.
At the beginning of World War I, my oldest brother joined the Navy and the rest (four)
of us returned to our land in Colorado. "As we became adults, economic situations and
choice of occupations scattered us. However, we all claim Colorado as our home."
Emma Bohl is one of many of her kind, but we are proud to be introduced to her through
her needlework. Because of women like her, the patterns have been passed down
through generations and today our young women are showing an interest in
recreating articles from the past and utilizing the designs in up-to-date projects.
Women today have time, because of modern conveniences, to delve into
all kinds of handiwork, not because they have to but because they want
to. Needlework is bigger and better than ever before, and we have beautiful
materials, practically at our fingertips, to create many of the needlework arts.
This is a far cry from what Mrs. Bohl experienced in procuring her needs
for needlework from the turn of the century to today.."
Emma, born Dec 28, 1875 in Iowa, died April 23, 1978 in San Diego County.
Emma is buried in Canon City # 112664734.

IRENE
1943 Santa Cruz, California "Miss Irene Bohl, formerly of the Sentinel
News, is now in the army service stationed at Honolulu.
About the newspapers she says, "although operated on more
metropolitan lines, putting out three editions a day,
they aren't much larger than the Sentinel.
One has the same type faces for heads as the Sentinel has.
They make it look familiar." She says the longer she
remains there the further away the mainland seems. "I feel as if I were in another world and definitely . not a part of the United States."
Irene Bohl died in Kitsap County, Washington October 8, 1998
"Irene Bohl, 98, a resident of Bremerton, passed away on October 8 after a brief illness. Irene was a female pioneer in journalism, starting her career in 1928 upon graduation from high school. She worked for many newspapers in reporting and editorial roles and was known for her integrity, tenacity, journalism excellence, and positive impact on her co-workers.
During World War II Irene served in the Women's Air Raid Defense, stationed in Hawaii to monitor for enemy aircraft following the Pearl Harbor attacks. Irene's career spanned newspapers in Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Arizona and California, and included highlights such as covering a prison riot from inside the prison at age 18 and interviewing Eleanor Roosevelt as she passed through town. She was often the first female reporter or editor on a paper, blazing a trail for other women to follow. Following her retirement, Irene continued to work as a hospital volunteer and enjoyed the freedom to travel internationally. Irene shattered many glass ceilings and has always been an inspiration to the younger generations in her family, particularly the women.
As impressive as her professional accomplishments are
the relationships Irene nurtured with her siblings and
many nieces and nephews in several generations.
She was a devoted advocate for the children in the family.
Many family members feel that they were her special
favorites, a great tribute to Irene considering the size
of the extended family! She is survived by 4 nieces,
one nephew, and numerous great-, great-great-,
and great-great-great nieces and nephews, as well
as many professional and neighborhood friends."
