Charlotte C. (Bawtinhimer) Wells, 8 South 43 West




Charlotte claimed a quarter in section 14, 8S 43W in 1891.
She is likely the Charlotte Christine Bawtinhimer born Sept 8, 1872 at Blenheim, Oxford, Ontario, Canada to Benjamin Bawtinhimer and Jennette Gear.

Two other Charlotte Bawtinhimer's were in Blenheim in 1871, one 48 born in Scotland married to Peter 63 born in Ontario. Charlotte is 17, born in Ontario, and Louisa Robinson 5 is with them.

This is Charlotte's sister:
Charles Lyman Holding, his wife Rachel and their daughters Mabel, Catherine and Norma.
Lyman, as he was known, was born in 1844 in Brantford, Ontario, the son of Julia, and Josiah Holding. His mother Julia was born in Ireland and his father, Josiah, a carpenter, was from the United States. In 1870, in the town of Galt (now part of Cambridge), he and Rachel Bawtinhimer, the 22 year old daughter of Peter and Charlotte, who had raised a family of nine on their farm in Blenheim, Oxford County. were married. They began their life together in Brantford, living with Lyman’s widowed mother Julia, where he was employed as a boilermaker and Rachel as a housekeeper. The first daughter, Mabel, was born in 1872 and her sister Catherine (Katie) followed in 1874."


In 1881 Oxford, Peter is 74, farming, with Charlotte 55, Charlotte 26, Margaret 23, David 21, and Thomas 18 both farming.

Peter, age 70, died May 4, 1882 in Oxford of pneumona.

Charlotte Bawtinhimer and James Arthur Wells of Superior, Nebraska, 29, born in Highlands, Wisconsin, a merchant, married on May 21, 1884 in Oxford, Ontario.

James A. Wells was in Jewell County, Kansas in 1880, 23??, single, with parents Thomas 71 and Susan T. 64. Harold is 3, born in Wisconsin.

In 1885 Superior, Nebraska, James is 50, a retired merchant born in Wisconsin. Lottie is his wife, 30, born in Canada.

"Mr. N.T. Wells was born in Lincoln county, Missouri, October 25, 1845, and is a son of Thomas E. and Susan Wells, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of West Virginia. They were married in Missouri and in 1846 moved to Wisconsin, where the father engaged in farming for many years. Eventually they went to Jewell county, Kansas, where their deaths occurred. They became the parents of eleven children, of whom two are living."

Thomas E. Wells 1809-1887 died in Jewell County, and is buried in Superior, Nebraska # 61240503, with Susan (Dameron) Wells 1815-1885 # 61240347.

October 28, 1885 Jewell County " Susan Wells, late of Nuckols county. Nebraska, deceased. All persona having claims aeainst said estate will present the same for allowance, and all persons owing said estate will make settlement with me as required by law. "

October 2, 1889 Jewell County " Thomas Wells was born in Lamborn, England, March 17, 1826, and departed this life at his pleasant home near Formoso, Kansas, September 27, 1889. He came to America in June, 18?1. Was married to Mrs. Ellen E Barrett, Feb. 5, 1876. Bro. Wells sought, and found the Lord on his death bed several days before his death and joined the M. E. Church. He leaves a bright evidence of his faith in God. He leaves a loving wife and many friends to mourn his loss. His funeral services were held at his home Sept. 23, conducted by the writer. The sermon was preached from a passage of scripture of his own selection, (Ps. 32:5). Rev: G. L. R.MiTCK, Pastor M. E. Church. "

Charlotte Bawtinhimer was naturalized in Elbert County, Colorado in 1888 (At that time the 8S 43W township was in Elbert County)

In 1892 Mrs. Charlotte Bawtinhimer is living at 4128 Orange in Denver.

In 1896 Mrs. Charlotte Bawtinhimer is living at 3945 Blake, Denver.

In 1900 Chicago, Charlotte Wells born Feb 1857 in Canada, married sixteen years, has Ottie May 1886 born in Nebraska.
Her mother Charlotte Burce Bawtinhimer was also in Chicato in 1900, with adughter Lavinia E. Griffith, born 1846 in Ontario - father George Griffith 1820-1851.
Charlotte Griffith and William W. Robinson married April 12, 1864 in Waterloo, Ontario, immigrating to the U.S. in 1865.

Lavinia born Nov 19, 1846 in Guelph, Ontario to George Griffith and Charlotte Bruce, died in Chicago Feb 5, 1940, to be buried in Mt. Hope., William W. Robinson of England died in 1915, alto to be buried in Mt. Hope.
William was the president of a furniture manufacturing company, born April 7, 1843 in England, dying in Chicago Dec 23, 1915.


One tree said Charlotte (Bruce) Bawtinhimer, born 1822/1824 in Scotland, died March 7, 1906 in Denver, buried in Ayr Cemetery, Ontario.

In 1910 Denver, Charlotte J. Wells is 48, born in Canada, immigrating in 1884. James A. Wells is with her, 50, born in Wisconsin, farming, and Leona O 23 is with them, born in Nebraska.

Charlotte is 50 in 1920 Denver, married but no spouse. Leona O. Reiss 33 and her son Theodore H. 5 are with her, and four boarders.

James A. Wells is in Denver in 1920, widowed, 63, born in Wisconsin, in a lodging house.

One tree said James, born March 6, 1855 in Iowa County, Wisconsin, died May 22, 1924 in Denver.
It also says Nancy Wells, 1843-1924 died in Benkelman, Nebraska.

Theodore H. Reiss, age 39, died in Los Angeles County July 19, 1930.

In 1930 Denver, Grace Charlotte Wells is 74, widowed, with daughter Leona A. Reiss also widowed.
Theodore was in Los Angeles in 1930, single, 49, a violinist, with sisters Johanna 45 born in Lousiaian and Cecilia 42 in Germany.

In 1940 Denver, Charlotte is widowed, 81, with daughter Otta Reiss 53 widowed. John D. Reiss is 11, born in Colorado.

Charlotte G. Wells' obituary was in the July 25, 1941 issue of the Denver Post.

Leona had married Theodore Herzog Reiss in Denver on April 9, 1913. Theodore was born Dec 14, 1871 in New Orleans to Nathan V. Rice and Franzisca Herzog.

Nathan Reiss 1843-1893 is buried in Denver # 35466922, "Co. M. , 2 New York Cavalry.
Franziska J. Reiss 1843-1917 is buried in Congregation Emanuel cemetery, Denver # 1170574899.

Samuel Reiss was appointed a notary in Arapahoe County on August 8, 1893.

In 1900 Denver, Frances Reiss is 56, Theodore 27, Samuel 25, Johanna 24, Henrietta 23, and Cecelia 21.


Because we thought her interesting, this section includes Leona's sister-in-law Henrietta.
Henrietta Reiss and Benjamin Kobey married in Denver on Feb 4, 1904,.

1914 Aspen "Miss Reiss who has been visiting her sister Mrs. B. R. Kobey the past ten days left last evening on the Midland for her home in Denver."
They're in Aspen in 1920, Benjamin 46 born in England, immigrating in 1879, with Hettie R. 42 born in Lousiaia. Nathan is 14, born in Colorado, and adopted daughter Ruth H. 12 born in New York

August 10, 1921 Denver

"Nathan, Dorothy, and Silas Kobey posed for a formal portrait in Aspen, Colorado in 1923. All three wear graduation caps and gowns. Dorothy, whose nickname was ''Dokes,'' and Silas Kobey were the children of Harris and Leah Sheffel Kobey. Nathan Kobey was the son of Benjamin and Hattie Reiss Kobey, as well as a cousin of Dorothy and Silas Kobey. Dorothy was the valedictorian of the 1923 graduating class at Aspen High School in Aspen, Colorado. "

Theodore was in Denver in 1910, 38, with mother Francisza 66 widowed born in Germany. Johanna is 35, also born in Louisiana, and Cecilia 31 in Germany? Theodore graduated from medical school in 1917 Denver, and was a physician in 1922 Denver, living at 3600 Cook with wife Leona Otta Reiss.

Theodore H. Reiss and L. Otta Wells married in Denver on April 9, 1913.
