March 24, 1911 Aspen "The untimely, died of Nathan H. Carr, Wednesday,
caused a lull in business and social circles, as less than two weeks ago he was
part of our busines activity: today he lies cold in, died, and few know what he
suffered in this short illness. Two weeks ago today he was taken ill at his office;
was taken home and pneumonia fast developed. All that the best medical skill, trained nurses
and loving friends could do was done, but the dread disease baffled every effort and
Wednesday about 12 o'clock his spirit passed to the Great Beyond, his loving wife and daughter,
Dorothy, and intimate friends being at his bedside. Olive, the older daughter, who
is a teacher on the Meeker staff, was on her way home, but owing to the almost
impassable condition of the roads, she missed her train at Rifle, so did not
arrive until yesterday's
Rio Grande; she was accompanied by her aunt, Mrs. Al. Strelkhe of Meeker,
Mr. Strelkhe following on the Midland, arriving last evening; Mrs. Sampson Waters having arrived on
yesterday morning's Midland from Denver. In the meantime, a sister, Mrs. Hitchcock,
arrived today from Chicago.
Nate Carr, as he was popularly known among his many friends, was born
in Foxburg, Pa., in 1862; came to Colorado some twenty-seven years ago and engaged
in the drug business in Denver and Greeley . Later he came to Aspen, having in the mean
time married Miss Jennie Waters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sampson Waters of Denver.
Here he engaged in the drug business, but owing to the close confinement in this work
and his liking for more outdoor life, he accepted a position with the Taylor & Brunton Sampling Works
compiiny of this city, and soon became their head assayer and chemist,
a position he occupied for some thirteen years. While in this position he laid the
foundation for the preseny Shield-O ranch and became its manager and co-owner.
At the tlnio of his, died he had an assay office in the city.
To say that N. H. Carr was one of Pitkin county's most progressive and popular
men is putting it mildly. He was well known to most of the county's inhabitants and
his fondness for rural life endeared him to the rural folk who honored him by having
him named as one of the state live stock inspectorsâ€a position he filled to the time
of his, died in a most oommendable manner.
As a husband and father he was idealâ€was strictly a home man - in fact,
his hnme was his church. Ae a neighbor he was loyal to his friends and generous to all.
He leaves a loving wife and two affectionate daughters; five sisters and three
brothers in the Eastern states, besides his wife's relatives, to mourn his untimely
calling."
