"She married an unknown Updike (fate unknown) in the early 1850's, probably in Chickasaw County, Iowa, with whom she had one son, William "Willie" Cornelius Updike. She married Joseph Crawford sometime between 1855-1858 in Iowa, with whom she had one daughter, Martha, in Iowa (died young) & three boys (all born in Cortland, Dekalb Co., IL.): John L., Peter M., & Joseph W. Her husband died when her youngest was just two years of age, but she never remarried.
Note: the 1870 Cortland, Dekalb Co., IL census incorrectly lists Willie as a Crawford instead of an Updike.
Of her children: Willie Updike (wife Ella) #28850630, moved west, first to Nebraska & then on to Colorado. Daughter Martha (born 1858/59) died before 1870. Sons John (wife Mary Etta/Marietta) #08360764, & Peter (wife Martha/Mattie) #08360726, both moved to Saline a County, Kansas. Youngest son Joseph (wife Lydia/Liddie) moved briefly to Kansas, settled in Iowa but moved back to Illinois."

In 1900 Jefferson County, Colorado, Willie C. Updike is farming, born May 1853 in Iowa, married 23 years to Ella A. February 1858 Massachusetts. Bell was born Sept 1879 in NEbraka, Jay Dec 1881, Guy C. March 1885, bot in Nebraska, Glenn Sept 1887 and Laverge May 1898, both in Colorado.

October 1912 Ralston (Jefferson County, Colorado) items "Mr. and Mrs. Will Updike departed the first of the week for their old home in Iowa. They expect to be gone several months."

February 1915 Ralston "W. C. Updike has added a high class Holstein bull to his dairy herd. It is suspected W. C. has an interest in the famous Cresson mine, as such indingences require a barrel of money."

June 28, 1917 "Miss Rachael Futhey, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Futhey, of this city, and Glenn Updike, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Updike, of Ralston, were quietly married Thursday last at Littleton. The young couple left Saturday for Craig, Colo., where they will make their home."

July 1918 Golden, Colorado "Mrs. Will Updike, of Craig, was visiting her sister, Mrs. Lorey Trezise, last week."

August 1920 "J. S. Crawford and wife, of Salina, Kansas, are visiting at the home of W. C. Updike. The gentlemen are half-brothers and had not seen each other in forty-two years. "

Septembr 1920 Craig "Mrs. J. D. Harlan and Mrs. Belle Moorehouse are here from Hampton, Iowa, on a visit to the W. C. Updike family. The ladies are sisters of Mrs. Updike, and all are thoroughly enjoying the visit."

January 1921 "W. C. Updike yesterday got word from Denver that his son-in-law. Samuel Cooley, is recovering from a serious illness. Mrs. Updike started for Denver Thursday to assist her daughter in caring for the sick man."

January 1922 Jefferson County " W. C. Updike, formerly of Ralston, now of Craig, Moffat county, is visiting old friends and renewing old acquaintances on Ralston. He reports Moffat county on the top wave of prosperity. "

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Updike are the parents of a baby boy born at the W. C. Updike home Sunday. December 17, 1924 "

March 1933 Craig, Colorado "Miss La Verge is spending a few days in Craig visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Updike."


Craig, Colorado May 2, 1934 "Funeral services for W. C. Updike were held at the Christian Church in Craig Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The local lodge of Elks, of which Mr. Updike was a member, had charge of the service.
Mr. Updike passed away at his home in Craig Thursday night at 10:30 o'clock, after an illness of more than a year. He was bedfast for many months, gradually growing weaker, until the end came Thursday. a Willie C. Updike was born May 21, 1856 at Mason City, Iowa. He was married to Ella Mason on September 13, 1876 at Batavia, Illinois. To this union five children were born, four of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Updike came to the West in 1887. They settled In Kit Carson county, Colorado, where they lived for nine years. They later moved to Denver, came to Moffat county in 1917, and made their home in Craig, where they have since lived. Mr. Updike engaged in ranching and livestock raising almost his entire life. He was skillful in the handling of stock and particularly sick or injured stock. His neighbors frequently advised with him about any illness of livestock, and found that his suggestions were always good. He was a member of No. 1577 B. P. O. E. and took an active part in the work of the lodge, until his illness confined him to his home. a Mr. Updike is survived by his wife, two sons, Glen and Guy, both of Craig, two daughters, LaVerge Cooley of Craig and Belle Lane of Grand Junction, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery."

September 1934 " Mrs. Will Updike and Mrs. La Verge Cooley of Craig spent Monday at the Glen Updike home. "

October 28, 1936 "Mrs. Ella Updike, a resident of Craig for the past 20 years, died at her home here Monday noon, following an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Updike had been in poor health for the past two years, but became more seriously ill two weeks ago, an illness from which she failed to rally at her advanced age.
Ella Augusta Mason was born Feb. 9, 1858, in Boston, Mass.; on Sept. 13, 1876 she was married to W. C. Updike, and they became the parents of five children. They have been residents of Colorado since 1887 when they came West, homesteading on the Eastern Slope near Golden, Colo., where they lived until 1917. They moved to Moffat county at that time, and built a fine residence on the west edge of Craig, where Mrs. Updike has since resided.
Mrs. Updike is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Belle Lane of Grand Junction, and Mrs. LaVerge Cooley of Craig; two sons, Guy and Glen, both Moffat county ranchers.
Her husband and one son preceded her in, died.
A friend has said of the aged woman; 'She lived a long life and a useful one. Her first thought was always of her immediate family, but she leaves a host of friends to mourn her, died.'
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Christian Church in Craig, with Rev. M. C. Morris in charge. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery."

June 1915 Ralston items "Jay Updike bas taken his annual trip to Elk Horn, Colo., where he will proceed to develop a very valuable mining property."

September 1915 Golden " Jay Updike returned home last week, after spending several months at Elkhorn."
February 1916 "As a great shock to the people of Golden and the Ralston valley came the news last Sunday that Jay C. Updike, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Updike, had been killed in a coal mine near Oak Creek. Updike and his partner were operating a coal cutting machine, when a huge piece of coal or rock fell, crushing Updike so badly that he died a few hours later. Young Updike had gone to Routt county to engage in ranching, and had been working in the coal mine for only a short time. He had planned to quit on the day he was killed, intending to be at home here on the first of the month.
Updike had reached the aga of 34 years, and had lived in this county for 25 years. He was one of the most popular young men in this section.
Aside from his heartbroken father and mother, he is survived by several brothers and sisters."

LAVERGE

November 1920 "Tomorrow at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Updike, their daughter, Miss Laverge, is to become the bride of Samuel Cooley of Denver. Only the relatives and a few close friends will witness the ceremony, which will be performed by the Rev. Carl Wild, pastor of the Craig Christian church.
Miss Updike is a native Jefferson county girl who has become decidedly popular during her five years residence in this section. The groom is a former service man, having been with the marines during the World war. Mr. and Mrs. Cooley will make their home in Denver."

" La Verge Weems passed away November 24, 1998 at Family Health West, Fruits, Colorado, at the age of 101. Graveside services will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m, at Orchard Mesa Cemetery with Elder Charles Pope officiating. Burial will follow at the cemetery. Mrs. Weems was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She had been a resident of Grand Junction for 41 years, since 1937.
She was born May 23, 1897 in Littleton, Colorado to W.C. and Ella Updyke and spent her childhood in the Littleton area. On April 2, 1940, she married Charles Weems in Bel Aire, Maryland. He preceded her in, died. She had previously been married to Sam Cooley. They were later divorced.
Mrs. Weems was an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing. She liked people and many people liked her.
Survivors include her daughter, Glynora and husband, Dudley Clymer of Grand Junction; a grandson, Pat and wife, Jackie Clymer; three great grand-children; and five great-great grandchildren."
