"Edward Holcomb Stiles was born on October 3, 1836, in Granby, Connecticut. In 1856, Stiles moved to Wapello County, Iowa, and taught school the following winter. He studied law with Colonel S. W. Summers of Ottumwa, Iowa, and was admitted to the bar in 1857.
Stiles formed a partnership with Summers. In 1858, Stiles was elected a member of the Ottumwa City Council and became city counselor in 1859. In 1860, Stiles was a Democrat. He stumped for Stephen A. Douglas in Iowa alongside Henry Clay Dean for the 1860 presidential election. After the Civil War, Stiles became a Republican. In 1861, Stiles became a county attorney. In 1863, Stiles was elected as representative in the Iowa House of Representatives for the 1864 session. In 1865, Stiles was elected to the Iowa Senate, serving in the 1866 session but ultimately resigned in 1866 after his nomination to the Republican State Convention as reporter for the Supreme Court. He was the first elected to the position of reporter of the Supreme Court. He served in the role until 1875. Stiles published with Thomas F. Withrow four volumes of Digest of Decisions of the Supreme Court of Iowa, a history of the Supreme Court from territorial days to the date of publication, from 1874 to 1879.
In 1883, Stiles ran as a Republican for the U.S. Congress, but lost to James B. Weaver. Stiles worked as a local attorney for Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad for about twenty years. In 1886, Stiles moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He then worked as a law partner with ex-Governor Thomas T. Crittenden. He also practiced law with Judge H. C. McDougal. In 1892, Stiles was appointed as master in chancery for the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. In 1894, Stiles was appointed as special master of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, St. Louisâ€'San Francisco Railway and the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1911 from practicing law and moved to Pasadena, California. Stiles prepared and published Recollections and Sketches of Notable Lawyers and Public Men of Early Iowa in 1916.
Stiles married Emma M. Vernon of Chester County, Pennsylvania, on September 19, 1861. They had six children, including Vernon, Edward, Mrs. Egbert J. Gates and Bertha V. His daughter married California state senator Egbert J. Gates. His wife died in 1911."
Later in life, Stiles lived at 904 Mission Street in Pasadena. Stiles died at the home of his son-in-law Egbert J. Gates on May 9, 1921, in Pasadena, California."

He is en route to Collbran to visit a big ranch near that point which he owns. Judge Stiles visits Grand Junction occasionally and has much faith in the city and county.""

January 1913 Collbran, Colorado "The Voice has an interesting letter from Hon. E. H. Stiles, who is now living at So. Pasadena, California. Judge Stiles has been engaged for a year or two compiling data for a volume he will publish soon "Sketches of Lawyers and other Public Men of Early Iowa." When he goes east to have this book published he will visit Plateau Valley again.
M. Vernon Stiles is now at Cologne, Germany, where he has an engagement at the Royal opera house which will last two years more. He expects then to come to the U.S. A. He has been making great progress since he went abroad and may yet be hailed as the world's leading grand opera tenor. This last, by the way, is the Voice's observation and does not come from Judge Stiles."

"Dr. Edward Holcolm Stiles, 62, Tucson dentist, died yesterday morning at a local hospital after a brief illness, following an operation for appendicitis.
Dr. Stiles was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and later moved to Kansas City. He was graduated from Western Dental college in that city, and in 1899 was married to Rebecca Walker of Topeka, Kan. After practicing dentistry in Kansas City for a few years, he came west and established himself in Tucson in 1922, believing this a more promising field for his profession. Since that time he had built up a large practice.
He is a charter member of the Arizona Dental society and the American Dental association.
Dr. Stiles leaves his widow, Mrs. Rebecca Stiles; a daughter, Mrs. Osborne Walker, and a grand daughter, Rebecca Walker, of Little Rock, Arkansas; two sisters, Miss Bertha Stiles and Mrs. E. O. Gates of Pasadena, and a brother, Vernon Stiles of Hollywood, Calif.
Bertha Stiles and Mrs. Osborne Walker arrived in Tucson Friday, having been called here by Dr. Stiles' illness. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. E. C. Tuthlll at the Grace Episcopal church Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Pall bearers will be Byrd Brooks, George Fisher, Frank Culin, George Martin, Harry Helghton, and Fred Brown. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. "

Eugenie Stiles was born at Arbora, Rumania on October 19, 1887, marrying Maris Vernon Stiles at Edinburgh, Scotland in June 1909. Her permanent residence in 1911 was Kansas City, Missourim although whe had lived in Vienna since she applied in 1911 for a visa in Riga, Russia.
Dorothy Stiles was born at Vienna on March 6, 1910.

Maris Vernon Stiles, born 25 Mar 1880 in Iowa, died 10 Dec 1947 in Los Angeles County, Mother's Maiden Name Vernon.

Washington, D.C. "Vernon Stiles, 67, internationally known operatic tenor, died yesterday after a brief illness. Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, Mr. Stiles sang in light opera in the United States, studied in Europe and appeared in numerous cities there, including engagements at Bayreuth, where he appeared under Siegfried Wagner's direction. After serving as an Army captain in World War, he sang at the Metropolitan Opera house and with the Chicago Opera Company. He had lived here since his retirement in 1924."

September 1950 Lewiston Maine " Word has been received locally of the marriage of Miss Dorothy Stiles of Hollywood, Calif., formerly of Lewiston, to Michael Blankfort, also of Hollywood. The ceremony took place July 22 in Nevada. Mrs. Blankfort is the daughter of the late Vernon Stiles, well-known concert singer, and leader of the community concert series in Lewiston Auburn during World War I. She was graduated from Lewiston High School and Bates College with the class of 1921. She studied at the Sorborac in Paris and graduated... "

July 17, 1982 Fort Lauderdale, Florida "Michael Blankfort, a New York-born novelist, playwright and screenwriter, died Tuesday at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles of a head injury he suffered when he fell in the driveway of his Westwood home. He was 74 years Old. Among his 12 novels were A Time to Live in 1943, The Strong Hand in 1956, and An Exceptional Man in 1980. Many of the novels dealt with the clash of traditional Jewish values with the current cultural and social milieu. His 1965 novel, Behold the Fire, based on the exploits of a small band of Jews who worked as British spies among anti-Zionist Turks in Palestine during World War, earned him, among other honors, the S.Y. Agnon Award, given by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Born in New York City in 1907, Blankfort graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and moved to Los Angeles in 1937, where he became a screenwriter. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, writing training films. He returned to Hollywood to write such films as Broken Arrow and Tribute to a Bad Man.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Ellie Clothier of Los Angeles and Susan Camiel of San Diego, and a brother, Dr. Gerald Blankfort of Los Angeles. "
