" SPEARFISH, S. D., March 27, 1905
Enos McLaughlin, pioneer, citizen and soldier, who passed away at his home in this city a few days ago, owned at one time twenty-seven lota in what is now the heart of the city of Denver, and during 1859 lived at Fifteenth and Larimer streets, the present site of the Pioneer building. His wife, formerly Miss Mary Jane Bush, a music teacher of Buffalo, N. Y., was the first white woman to set foot in East Denver, and in recognition of this fact Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin were given two lots on what was then McGaw street, but which is now Market street, as a gift by the city, and it was here, in the year 1860, that Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin entertained Horace Greeley.
Frank McLaughlin, who at present resides at 1390 Stewart street, and who has practiced law in Denver during the past five years, with present offices in the Kittredge building, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Enos McLaughlin.
McLaughlin was born in West Salem, Pa., in 1825. Twenty-four years later he crossed the isthmus of Panama, headed by water for the gold fields of California, and during the next two years he was engaged in placer mining near the present city of Sacramento.
In 1859 he and his wife crossed the plains by ox teams to the then embryo mining camp of Denver, where Mr. McLaughlin invested in real estate. In 1861 he moved to a ranch five miles northeast of Denver, but which is now a residence portion of the city. In June of the same year came the call to his country, and on that date he enlisted with the Second Colorado regiment. No sacrifice for him was too great, and it was due to this loyalty to his country that he lost all his property, for, leaving it in the hands of brokers, they took advantage of his long absence and robbed him of all of it.
In 1876 Mr. McLaughlin came to the Black Hills, and has been a prominent factor in mining circles ever since, having founded the present city of Maitland, which district now produces great wealth through the new cyaniding process.
His wife, one daughter and three sons survive him: Eugene, a merchant at Benton Harbor, Mich.; Frank, a prominent attorney in Denver; William, county auditor of this county, Deadwood, S. D., and Mrs. James Soutar of this city. Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic."

December 1895 " The editor of the Southwestern Presbyterian feels constrained to warn his readers against 'the subtle poison' of humanitarianism which he finds lurking in some of the Drumtochty stories by lan Maclaren. ..... But "the worst example of all" is found in the story of the girl, Lilly Grant, whose dying hours are made happy and content by the deception practiced upon her by the loving, gentle and sympathetic Jamie Soutar. The great grief of the dying girl has been the apparent neglect of her mistress, whom she had served so well. Jamie disposes of this source of unhappiness in the only way that seems open to him. He tells Lilly Grant that her mistress had actually been twice a day at the hospital to inquire about her. He also produced £2O in gold, his own, which he had drawn from his savings in the home bank, and represents it as her mistress' gift.
"Here we have,” says the Southwestern, "the Very doctrine unblushingly taught by Jesuit casuists, that one may steal or lie ‘for the greater glory of God.'"
