January 1891 Rocky Mountain News
"Suffering in Kit Carson County.
As reports from the various precinct committees come in, the actual suffering is shown up in its true light, and while we knew that there was intense suffering, we had no true conception ot its magnitude.
We little dreamed that we had, within a few miles of Burlington, children who were going bare footed to school, and who had to go miles around to avoid the snow drifts. The other day a little boy came to Burlington to get something for his sick baby brother. All that the people had in the house was parched corn and 25 cents. The money was spent for flour and sugar for the sick child. Perhaps they don't suffer. We will wager that the child will do as did Martin's †die.
There is a family eight miles east from Burlington who have lived for a month on parched corn. Perhaps this is not suffering? Fourteen miles northeast from Burlington there lives a family who have lived for six weeks on squash. The children have nothing to wear on their feet. Their lives must be
supremely happy as we have no suffering in this county.
†Burlington Boomerang of January 22.
The town lot boomers have decried the plea for aid, but the victimized farmers talk differently as
may be seen by the following expressions:
My child died for lack of aid. †T. Martin, Tuttle postoffice.
'There must be fifty or sixty families actually suffering. †George Bent.
It is foolish for any one to say we have no suffering in this county. †D. Kavanaugh.
In the name of God send flour and coal to those marked needy. When we go among the people we
learn the truth. †A. C. Willis in his report to the county aid committee.
Yes, a man who is getting §2,000 from the county can sit in his office and swear that he don;t
know of any suffering. I promised twenty affidavits, 1 can get 200 if necessary. †M. Higgins.
I know of fifty children whose feet are bare and their bodies nearly so. †Harvey J. Van Horn.
The man who says there is no suffering in this county is the off-spring of a dog. †H. Conkling.
I have exhausted all my means and am compelled to trust to the generosity of Kanorado store-keepers
for ray family’s living. †David Pollaril.
The man who will get out among the peoule will find plenty of suffering. â€J ohn Hillers.
People have stayed here year after year until they have spent their last dollar,
and as the merchants will not trust them they must burn.chips and eat corn.
1 know of a large number of children who are compelled to stay away from school because they have no
covering for their feet. †Samuel Hubbell.
The man who throws his influence against getting aid into our county is taking the bread out
of the mouths of hungry children, and is worse than a thief. †J. S. McKee.
Those who claim that there is no suffering in our county can better substantiate their
position by signing an affidavit to that effect. We know that there is and we are not ashamed to
swear to what we know. †William Long and others."
