" Joel H. Simmons OBITUARY (By J. W. Conway.) Born in McDonough county, Apr. 20, 1847. Died in Topeks, Oct. 29, 1923. Interment Topeka yesterday after noon. Tbe deceased is first mentioned la Lockard's History of Norton County on psge 5 where it may be read that bo settled on a homestead here Mar, 5. 1872. On page 57 read of his marriage here to Grace Ellen Cnrry, of his being Norton's first town school tescher; of his political career as county clerk and county superintendent; of his editorial work on tbe Courier as editor and half owner with Prof. J. A. LUtel, and editor under Billy McCrea; of his clerkship in the Kansas Senate under Senator Lockard, chairman of the committee on Public Health, after which Lockard secured from George R. Peck an accounting clerkship for him in the Santa Fe ofice in Topeka alnce Jan 1, 1891, and for his continued service there till, died on the pension honor roll since 1916. The Lockard History mentions bim often; and when tho good, the true, the worthwhile men and deeda of this county are mentioned the omission of his name would offend appreciative history. Physically and mentally Joel H. Simmons waa of gigantic mold; a clean man morally; a generous, noble character; and a friend to the end of bis purse or his strength. I had hoped that he would be one of tbe three left to introduce me to my neighbors who know me not. A man owes an apology to the community in which he lived 45 years, 3 mo. 26 da. a stranger. Joel able to write tbe apology for me. Most all old settlers now alive are readers of The Champion, and I know they join me in expressing personal loss in the, died of Simmons."


September 16, 1963 Modesto, California "Robert Leighton Wells, 75, a retired mechanic, died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness. Wells was a native of Modesto. He had lived in Modesto and Oakland all his life. He was a member of the machinists union in Oakland.
Survivors include his widow, Ella Wells of Modesto, a daughter, Esther Enos of Hayward, Alameda County, two granddaughters, Kay Bell of Modesto and Cheryl Enos of Hayward, a grandson Edward Enos Jr., of Hayward, and two sisters, Kathyrn Whitmer of Pacific Grove , Monterey County and Ethel Motta of Modesto. Services are pending in the Franklin Downs Funeral Home."

"Nov. 13, 1889 †R. L. Hubbard was appointed today postmaster at Burlington, Kit Carson county, vice J. M. Leal, deceased."
