ELMER AND MARY
They had a son born in Mulberry, Clay County,
Kansas on December 8, 1896. Elmer was 36, Mollie B. 32.
"Vona, in Kit Carson County, was named for a
niece of Pearl S. King, a Burlington lawyer.
Some say he was a printer not a lawyer.
There were no settlers, only living things being
jack rabbits, prairie dogs, and a few coyotes and
antelope. First people were those connected with
the railroad, such as depot agents, section bosses,
and pump men. In 1888, a contract was taken by
E.H. Haynes to grade two miles of Rock Island
road bed at Bethune. The engineers indicated to
Mr. Haynes where the Vona station would be
located, so he filed a homestead entry
adjoining that spot. However, no town lots were
to be laid out until nearly twenty years later,
when the southwest forty was platted, and
about that time a plot was deeded for the
cemetery. A brother of Mrs. Haynes,
Z.J. Kiser, filed on a quarter section
cornering to the south-west.
The following history was written by
Elmer H. Haynes, probably in the late 1930's.
Mr. and Mrs. Haynes first lived north of the
section house in a dugout, but later they
were able to secure a frame building
formerly used as a saloon."
"For several years Mrs. Haynes and children held down the claim while Mr. Haynes was away on earth moving projects. Final proof was made on the homestead in 1895, the family left, and were not to return until 1907."

1889. He died at the Memorial Hospital in Craig Sunday,
February 5. Mr. Haynes attended grade and high schools in
Kansas and business college in Fort Collins, Colorado.
He assisted his father for several years in contract
construction of water storage dams and railroad grades in
Nebraska and Colorado. After short stays in Leadville and
Denver, and at various construction sites, the family home
was established in what became the townsite of Vona, Colorado.
While at Vona he met and later married Lucy Palmer,
of the Vona community. The young couple were joined in
matrimony at Cneyenne Wells, Colorado on October 19, 1909.
Soon after their marriage, they settled on a homestead south
of Vona. Their home was maintained at that location for 27
years, despite adversities and bitter toil. After leaving
the homestead, Mr. Haynes worked for various government
agencies in clerical and supervisory positions. In 1942
he became an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad and
remained in the service of that company until his retirement
in 1965. After retirement. Mr. Haynes bought a home in
Oak Creek. His declining years brought the fulfillment of
a long-cherished desire, a life devoted to the enjoyment
of his family, to hunting and fishing, to trips south
in the winter and summers in the high hills of Colorado.
Many winters were spent in or near the Texas community of
Freeport. where several wholehearted and valued
friendships were formed.

It was made much more bearable by the warm and personal medical care
he received in Craig.
