EDWARD
Edward claimed a quarter in section 11, 8 South, 42 West in 1890.
E. L. Hanks, who is successfully engaged in general farming and stock-raising in Roodhouse township, was born February 19, 1865, upon his father's farm in that township. He is a son of John and Eliza Ann (Roberts) Hanks. His paternal grandfather, Joshua Hanks, was a native of North Carolina and became a resident of this state when the work of settlement had been underway for but a brief period, and as one of the pioneer residents of the state he contributed to the improvement and development of the locality in which he made his home. He was of English lineage, while the Roberts family was of Irish extraction and was founded in North Carolina at a very early day.
John Hanks was born in Madison county, Illinois, November 23, 1819, and is one of the oldest native sons of the state still living within its borders, his home being now in Roodhouse. He was reared to the occupation of farming, which he always followed throughout his active business career, and at an early day he purchased the land on which his son E. L. Hanks now resides. With characteristic energy he began its development and improvement and continued its cultivation until he retired from active farm life. He has since lived in the quiet enjoyment of the fruits of his former toil. He married Eliza Ann Roberts, who was also born in Kentucky, in 1819, and was a daughter of Lewis Roberts, a native of Kentucky. They are the oldest married couple now living in Greene county. In their family were seven children: Lawson R., who lives in Colorado and has nine children; Homer L., who makes his home in Scott county, Illinois, and has four children; Henry L., who lives in Beardstown, Illinois, and has two children; Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Hillman, of Kansas; and the mother of five children; Julia Ann, the wife of Joseph McDonald, of Washington, by whom she has three children; and Effie Loretta, the widow of William Cameron.
The other member of the family is E. L. Hanks of this review, who has spent his entire life in Greene county. He pursued his education in the public schools and was reared to the occupation of farming, which he has made his life work. Upon his father's retirement, he assumed the management of the old homestead property of one hundred and sixty acres of land in Roodhouse township, and is carrying on general farming and stock-raising with good success.
On the 3d of January, 1892, Mr. Hanks was united in marriage to Miss Eugenia Raines,
a daughter of Captain Raines, and after a happy married life of nine years,
she died on the 23d of April, 1901, leaving two children: Helen, who was born in April, 1898, and Eugenia Kenneth, born February 10, 1901. These children are now in the family of John B. Baird, of White Hall. Mr. Hanks still remains upon his farm, having a man and woman to help him. His business interests are well conducted and his farm bears every evidence of the supervision of a thrifty and painstaking owner who is practical, yet progressive, in his business.

CLYDE
January 1921 Steamboat Springs "C. G. Hanks started yesterday morning for Traer, Kans.,
in response to a telegram that his sister, Mrs. J. A. Douglas, was critically ill."
April 11, 1940 "Glenn T. Hanks was instantly killed in
an auto accident near Oxnard, Calif., Saturday, April 5,
at about 2:30 in the afternoon. The man with whom Glenn was
riding was injured and was taken to a hospital in Oxnard.
As soon as authorities identified Glenn, his uncles,
Frank and George Todd of Los Angeles, were notified.
They took care of all details in the affair and notified
Glenn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hanks, of the tragedy.
Mr. Hanks made arrangements to have Glenn's body shipped to
Steamboat Springs for burial. Frank Todd accompanied it on
the train, arriving at Bond, Colo., this morning, where he
was met by A. W. Heyer, who brought the body to Steamboat
Springs in the hearse.
Mr. and Mrs. Hanks and their son, George, also went to
Bond this morning. Funeral services will be held tomorrow
(Friday) at the Congregational church at 2 o'clock
in the afternoon. George and Bessie Jo Hanks,
brother and sister of Glenn, who are students at the
University of Colorado, arrived from Boulder on the
train Monday afternoon. Other relatives who will be here
for the funeral service are Mrs. Bessie Longenbaugh
and Miss Lula Todd of Cortez, sisters of Mrs. C. G.
Hanks; Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Paulicheck of Paonia
and Mrs. Mabel Averson of Grand Junction,
sisters of C. G. Hanks, and their brother,
Orville Hanks of Denver.
George Todd, the uncle with whom Glenn was
making his home in Los Angeles, was unable to come
to Steamboat Springs because he was subpoened to
appear at the coroner's inquest, which was to be
held in California today. The inquest was postponed
awaiting sufficient recovery of the man who was injured,
so that he could testify. Details of the tragic accident are
not yet available, but it is known that the car ran into a
telephone pole and Glenn suffered a fracture of the neck.
Glenn had gone to California less than a month ago to
work with the construction company of which his uncle,
George, is superintendent. At the time he was considering
a return to employment here with the telephone company
with which he had previously been employed.
During the summer and fall months he had been working
with his father, on the construction of several of the
fine new homes in Steamboat Springs.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G.
Hanks; his wife, who was visiting relatives in Nebraska
when Glenn left for California; a brother, George;
two sisters, Mrs. Lee Keller and Bessie Jo Hanks of
Steamboat Springs; two nephews and one niece,
children of Mrs. Keller, and numerous uncles,
aunts and cousins.
Glenn Todd Hanks was born in Cortez, Colo.,
February 4, 1912. He came to Steamboat Springs with his
parents when he was two years old, and was reared and
educated here. He was graduated from the Steamboat
Springs high school in 1930.
Since then he has been employed part of the time with
his father in the construction business and with the
Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph company in
Denver and in Steamboat Springs. He was away for about
a year and a half, working in Idaho and Utah shortly
after his graduation.
Glenn Hanks and Neydean Fulton were married in
Denver in October, 1936. Their only child, a son,
died at, born . Previous to his going west,
she went to Nebraska to visit relatives and was
there when she received news of his, died.
She is expected to arrive today.
Glenn was skilled in the building line and
efficient in the mechanical line while he was with
the telephone company. He had difficulty in
deciding which he wanted to continue when he made
up his mind to go to the west coast.
He loved the mountains and streams and took great
pleasure in hunting and fishing. Trips to the
out-of- the-way places were his delight.
Glenn was also an ardent skier and had achieved
unusual skill as a ski jumper. He won high
ratings for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports
clubs at many of the sectional tournaments.
He was an active member of the Congregational
church. Glenn Hanks is remembered for his cheery
smile, his willingness to do things for others.
He made friends quickly and also retained his
friendships. With his sudden going the community
as well as the family loses one of its
promising young men."
Clyde G. Hanks, resident of Steamboat Springs from 1914 to 1944, passed away on November 11, 1969
at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction following a short illness.
He was 84 years of age at the time of his, died.
He was born at Roadside, Illinois
on August 8, 1885, the same day that Ulysses S. Grant, president of the United States,
was buried. That explains the middle name of Grant. He was also identified with another president
through the Hanks name. His family tree showed that he descended from the same family as that of
the mother of Abraham Lincoln.
Mr. Hanks came to Colorado with his parents when he was only 6 months of age and lived in the
eastern part of the state until he was 17. Ho then went to Paonia and Cortez. It was in the latter
town that he and Sarah Joanna Todd were married Sept. 10, 1910. To that marriage were born
4 children, of whom 3 survive.
He began in the building contracting business when he was 23. His apprenticeship in that
trade was served in Idaho, where he helped in practically building the whole town of Ashton.
When the building started there were 15 people in Ashton. Forty years later there were 7,000.
C. G. Hanks constructed some of the finest residents in Steamboat Springs in his day,
including the E. D. Light home, the former E. A. Jackson residence,
and the old F. J. Blackmer home.
During the summer, his spare time was spent picking and marketing the berries and
garden produce from the small mountain ranch near town, where he and his family lived
during the warm months of the year. Avocations included fishing, hunting and prospecting
in Routt county. He was active in the Odd Fellows club in Steamboat during his residence here.
Moving to Grand Junction 22 years ago, he continued as a building contractor
until his retirement.
Surviving him are his wife; one son, George E. Hanks of Santa Ana, Calif.;
two daughters, Esther D. Keller of Littleton, Colorado, and Mrs. Robert (Bessie Jo) Quimby
of Canon City, Colo.; two brothers. Percy Hanks of Grand Junction
and Orville Hanks of Denver, Colo.: three sisters, Mrs. Harold Olingcr and
Mrs. Mabel Iverson of Grand Junction and Jennie Paulicheck of Paonia, Colorado:
