"Mrs. Emily Dedman Bortner, 50,
and her 19-month-old grandson,
Gary Lee Wolfe, drowned late
yesterday when their auto over-turned off a dirt embankment into
Red Willow creek on the Bortner
farm south of St. Ann, about 15
miles northwest of McCook.
Officials were not able to determine
what caused the car to leave the
road and plunge about 15 feet into
the creek bed, landing on its top.
Mrs. Bortner had taken the boy
with her to pick up their afternoon
mail and was returning from the
mailbox on a private road running
alongside the creek. They had just
crossed a rough wooden bridge over
the stream before overturning.
Mrs. Bortner was born in Missouri
May 4, 1896. She married James
Bortner in Marshfield, Missouri on
May 22, 1915 and soon after that
they moved to their farm home here.
Mrs. Bortner is survived by her
husband; two daughters, Mrs. Helen
Wolfe, McCook; and Mrs. Freda
Wolfe, Pasadena, California; one
brother, Tollie Dedman, McCook;
and one sister, Mrs. Sam Burchett,
who lives on a farm near McCook.
Mr. and Mrs. William Wolfe are the
child's paternal grandparents. A
great-grandmother, Mrs. Viola
Bortner, also survives.
Funeral services are tentatively set
for 2 p.m. Monday in the Memorial
Methodist church here, providing
the California relatives, Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Wolfe, arrive by then.
The Rev. C.R. Prouty will officiate.
Burial will be in Memorial Park
cemetery. Until Monday noon, the
bodies will like in state at the
Herrmann funeral home.
