Burlington, Colorado "The, died of Mary E. Brown
(better known aa "Grandma" Brown) occurred last
Wednesday evening, June 13, 1917.
Although not unexpected, it came asa a shock to
her friends. She had been in poor health for
some time, but was thought to be very much better
when all at once the call came for her to come
up higher and dwell with her Master, whom she
loved. The funeral was held at the M. E church
Friday afternoon. The services were conducted
by Rev. E. E. Gunckle.
Obituary:
Mary E. Welch was born in Butler County,
Pennsylvania, August 19, 1846: died at her son's home,
Loyal Brown, southwest of Kanorado. June 13,
1917, being at the time of her, died, 76 years,
9 months and 14 daye old. She waa married to
John M. Brown, April 3, 1861. To this union
was bora six children, three of them still living:
Thomas W. of Lincoln, Nebraska. Loyal C. of
Kanorado, Kansas, and Mrs. Clara B.
Dormant of Kanorado, Kansas.
Several grandchildren are living and one
great grandchild.
In 1886 they moved to Iowa and from
there to Nebraska: lived there until
the year 1896 when they moved to Colorado
. where since has been her home until the
time of her, died. For tbe tast two and
one half years she has been in Pennsylvania
visiting at her old home, returning her six weeks ago
She leaves to mourn her loss besides her children:
Mrs H. J. Barther of Litchfield, Nebraska, who was present at the funeral and three brothers in Pennsylvania and a host of friends.
Sister Brown wase converted in youth,
joined the church and has been a consistent member of the same all these years.
She joined the Methodist Episcopal church in
Kanarado in the summer of 1896 and has actively dentified herself with the church and God's people.
Sister Brown loved her church, stood closely by her doctrinine, and polity and a supporter of the same.
She has endeared herself to the people where she lived
by her care for the sick and a kindly word and
sympathy shown in time of need. She had much to do
with settling a new country, as this country was when she first came here, many will remember her in those days when it tried the nerve of the most heroic.
Careful in advice, kind but firm in planning and tho those like her, much is owed in laying the foundation secure for the oncoming people on which to build.
Sister Browna lived beyond her allotted
limo three score years and ten. God
had a purpose in sparing h«r life to so
ripe an age, and when the curtains are lifted and the record made clear,
someone has seen the way clarer, the breakers ahead avoided, character firmer by those years of ripe old age.
It would seem she might have had premonition
of the coming end and, seemed she had contemplated to live in her home here in the city with her daughter, but the traveler of, died came too soon and she has gone to a Home where no traveler has returned.
She was a great sufferer furing the latter
days of her illness, everiything was done by
loving hands that could be done to alleviate
pain and suffering, but waatchful eyes and
tender care could not stay the pain,
and relief only came when, died
released all that was mortal.
Sister Brown was among the most dapendable in
church work, when able for the task. She loved the Gospel
fed upon its word, no task did she hesitate to perform if
in her power to do so, in the church or caring for the sick, a word of comfort or helping to carry the loads of the grief stricken.
What a heritage to the children, how such a life ought to inspire
to high standards Of living and preparation to meet in a Home in
Heaven, where parting never comes, and no more saying 'goodbye'
or tears shed, a place is vacant here in the home, but a
mansion inherited in the skies. We may want for th touch of a vanquished hand and for a voice that is stilled.
Sister Brown is gone from us but not forgotten.
Funeral services ware conducted from the Methodist Episcopal in
Kanorado, Kansas, Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., June 15, 1917,
by E. E. Gunckel, pastor at the church. Her body laid away in the
Kanorado cemetery, followed by a large concourse of people.
The floral offering by friends were beautiful.
