Burl and Elda Alice Shiley married in Stella, Nebraska on January 1, 1888.

They had Cora Jean VanDeventer on July 30, 1889 in Richardson County, Nebraska.

Burl claimed a quarter in section 25, 7S 50W in 1892.

They had Lester M. VanDeventer on May 7, 1893 in Olivet, Hutchinson County, South Dakota.

Burl also claimed a quarter in Lincoln County, Colorado in 1898 - section 28 of 8S 52W.

Burl and Alice must have separated between 1893 and 1898.
He's in Jewell County, Kansas in 1900, a farm laborer for John and Lillie Galbreath, born July 1862 in Nebraska.
He's living with the H. T. Mower family in 1905 Jewell County.

1907 Falls City, Nebraska "Burl Vandeventer and cousin George Moore of Mankato, Kansas are visiting relatives here."

In 1910 he's still in Jewell County, divorced, 44, a farm hand for the William Cross family.

June 11, 1927 Longmont, Colorado "J. A. Vandeventer received word last night that his brother, Burl, of Superior, Nebr., had passed away. Mr. Vandeventer will not go to Nebraska for the funeral/

Shannon (IL) – Mrs. Alice Elda Berry, 87, died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Meyers.
Mrs. Berry was born near Lanark, daughter of John and Elizabeth Shafer Shiley. She was married in Avon, S.D. She lived in Avon until her husband died 13 years ago, then moved to Shannon to live with her daughter. Also surviving is a son in Avon.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Scharman funeral home. The Rev. Robert Hartman, pastor of the Shannon Evangelical United Brethren Church, will officiate. Services will also be held Friday in Avon. Burial will be in Tyndall, S.D.

August 1908 Longmont "Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Vandeventer and their granddaughter, of Nebraska, are visiting their son, J. A. Vandeventer."

Myrtle Van Deventer, 21 and Neil Berry, 20, both of Avon, South Dakota, married there on January 15, 1913.

Cora VanDeventer is in Merced County, California in 1920, 29, born in Colorado - single, occupation a rooming house.

July 1920

She was living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, when she married Andrew Parent 35, divorced, in Hutchinson County, South Dakona on July 30, 1920.

Cora Parent, widowed, age 26, born in Seibert, Colorado to Burl Van Deventer and Alice Shiley, married Floyd Sargent on October 17, 1925 in Kalispell, Montana.

She's buried in Whitefish, Montana, 1889-1969 # 73466684, with Floyd Elmer Sargent 1899-1967.


Lester M. VanDeventer was born May 7, 1893 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota to Burl Jerome VanDeventer and Elda Alice Shiley.

In 1910 Lester is 16, living with uncle Walter VanDeventer 44 and Returah 43.

November 1913 "Lester Vandeventer of Stella sustained a broken nose while playing in a school football game."

In 1920 Lester is farming in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, 26, with Hazel 23 and Harold 2.
Hazel E. James was in Richardson County, Nebraska in 1910, 13, daughter of Elmer E. 47 adn Sarah M. James, 42. Edith is 18, Floyd E. 15, Mary E. 11, Frank E. 8, Maud A. 6, and Darrel D. 2.

In 1940 Richardson County, Lester is 47, no occupation, Hazel 43, Harold 22 a railroad laborer, Jean 18 a bookkeeper, Walter 15, Ray 12, Thomas 10, Alice 7, and Joan 4.

1942 "Mr. and Mrs. Lester Van Deventer of Stella have three sons in the navy— Frank, Harold and Walter. The latter two have graduated from the training school at Jacksonville, Fla., and Prank is completing his course now. All three are Stella high school graduates. "

Frank Ellsworth Van Deventer, Aviation Machinist's Mate 3c, USN, was killed in World War II - son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Morgan Van Deventer, Stella.

May 30, 1953 "Miss Eleanor Joan Van Deventer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester M. Van Deventer, and Keith Edward Wheeler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wheeler were wed Sunday at the Com munity Church. The Rev. John A. Reger read the nuptial lines before an altar decorated with spring flowers and lighted candelabra. Miss Margaret Edwards at the organ accompanied Miss Alice Van Deventer, the bride's sister, who was soloist. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white Chantilly lace over nylon, designed with a Peter Pan collar. Mrs. Keith Cook of Hastings was her sister's matron of honor. She chose a peach gown, and carried a white carnation corsage. Lighting the candles were Miss Mary Lou Trussell, and Miss Jeanne Johnson. Miss Mary Helen Wheeler was flower girl, and Jack Cook was ring bearer. Hobert Wheeler, the bride groom's brother, was best man, and ushers were Richard Wheeler . , and Keith Cook. The couple will reside here."

Hazel McQueen born Dec 28, 1897, died in March 1975.

Jean Cook, 87, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 25, 2009 at Falls City. She was born December 23, 1921 at Avon, SD to the late Lester M. and Hazel (James) Van Deventer.
On June 11, 1940 she married Keith Cook at Troy, KS. He passed away on May 25, 2000.
Jean moved with her parents and family to Stella, NE at the age of 18 months. She graduated from Stella High School in 1938, as Valedictorian. The couple established their home in Stella when married and also lived at Everett, WA while Keith was in the U. S. Navy and she worked in the Civil Service. They returned to Stella following his discharge from service and later moved to Verdon, NE and moved to Falls City in 1959 and she has lived here since. Jean had worked for Kreifel's Building Center and also Jim Hill's, both in Falls City, until 1978 when she began caring for their son Jack in their home for 23 years. She was Nebraska Mother of the Year in 1983 and also received the Good Neighbor Award in Falls City. She was a member of the Bible Fellowship Church at Falls City.
Jean is survived by her sons, Larry and his wife Cherie of Kansas City, MO, James and his wife Tammy of Falls City, Bonnie Merz and her husband Kenneth of Auburn, CA, brother, Thomas J. Van Deventer and his wife Pat of Bumpass, VA, sister, Joan Wheeler and her husband Keith of Stella, sister-in-laws, Millie Van Deventer of Humboldt, NE, Lois Van Deventer of Lincoln, grandchildren, Jeff, Jerry, Chad, Rachel, Kelly, Cory, Heather, Jennifer and Jay, great-grandchildren, Kyle, Kelsey, Kaitlin, Megan, Jacob, Emma, Jaiden, Blaine, Emme, Lanie, Graham and Lexi. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Howard, Harold, Frank, Walt and Ray, sister, Alice Rue, daughter, Barbara Kay Cook and a son, Jack Cook.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Weinert officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Verdon Cemetery.

Walter J. Vandeventer 1923-2009, # 41546074
"His parents were Lester M. and Hazel (James) VanDeventer. He grew up in Stella, Ne. where he attended school and graduated from High School in the class of 1941.
After graduation he enlisted in the U.W. Navy on July 7, 1941 and served his country during WW II. He completed aviation mechanic school in Chicago, IL. and was aboard ships in the Pacific. He was awarded a Presidential unit Citation and a Purple Heart.
He was discharged on Aug. 23, 1962. Then worked for 10 years as a service man for the Lincoln Telephone Co. in Lincoln, NE. and then owned and operated "Van's Tavern" in Humboldt, Ne.
He was married April 18, 1975 to Millie Beutler at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dawson, NE. They continued to live in Humboldt, NE. He died reaching the age of 86 years, and 28 days.
He was preceded by 2 spouces, June Dishon and Oleta Rue. and brothers, Harold and Frank VanDeventer, a sister Alice Rue, brother in law Keith Cook and sister in law Nera VanDeventer.
Surviving are his wife Millie of Humboldt, Ne. sisters Joan Wheeler and husband Keith and Jean Cook of Falls City. brothers; Ray, and wife Lois, Tom and wife Pat.
Memorial services were held July 11, 2009 at the Stella Community Church. Inurnment will be at the Humboldt Cemetery, Humboldt, NE. "

Rosa Cullin was in Richardson County, Nebraska in 1880, 13, born in Indiana. Joseph Cullin is farming, 40, born in Tennessee, with Mary J. 33 born in Ohio. Fredinand is 10, William 8, George 6, Joseph 4, and Ethel 2.

Joseph Wood Cullin 1840-1920 is buried in Richardson County # 37773736. It says "Son of George Cullen and Susannah Allen. He was married twice, first to Mary Jane Hickman and then to Ella Jane McClain."
Mary J. Cullen 1847-1888 is buried there # 39319130, and so is Ella Jane (McClain) Cullen 1855-1925.


John proved up a quarter in 19, 7S 49W in 1894.
Like Burl, he timber-claimed a quarter in Lincoln County section 3, 8S 52W in 1898.

In 1900 Kit Carson County, John is a stock raiser, born March 1864 in Nebraska, married 14 years to Rosa B. October 1866 Indiana. Cecil M. July 1887, Rolley April 1891, and Ethel July 1896 were all born in Colorado.

1904 Longmont
(There was a community called Burlington in Boulder County)

August 1908 Longmont "Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Vandeventer and their granddaughter, of Nebraska, are visiting their son, J. A. Vandeventer."

January 1910 "T. W. Cullen started for Caldwell, Idaho, Tuesday. Mrs. W. H. Cullen and her children accompanied him to Caldwell, where they live. They have been visiting the home of J. A. Van Deventer, who accompanied them to Denver."

In 1910 John and Rose are in Longmont, Colorado, where is a team contractor. George 17, Cecil 13, and Ethel 9.

1925
March 20, 1925 "Mrs. J. A. Van Deventer today received word of the death of her stepmother, Mrs. Ella Cullen, at Fall City, Nebraska."


August 1925

November 1925 "Mr. and Mrs, John Van Deventer and daughter, Mrs. Ethel Young, and children were on Denver yesterday, visiting with Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Harris. In the evening they went on to Arvada for a brief visit with Mrs. Van Deventer's brother, H. L. Collins."

February 1926 "The annual reunion of Colorado people now In southern California was held at Sycamore Grove, Los Angeles, Sunday, Feb. 14.
Among the Longmont attendees were Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Van Deventer, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Van Deventer"

March 1926

September 1926 "Miss Inez Culler of Fort Collins, arrived yesterday for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Vandeventer. Miss Culler, who is Mr. Vandeventer's cousin, will remain here until Sunday when she will return home with Mr. and Mrs. Vandevender who will remain in Fort Collins until Monday."

July 9, 1927 "Mr. and Mrs. Guy Sheeley of Falls City, Nebr., arrived here last night for a week's visit with Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Van Deventer. Mrs. Van Deventer and Mrs. Sheeley are sisters."

September 1927 "Miss Fern Cullen of Estes Park is in town today enjoying a brief visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A, Vandeventer. Miss Cullen is a niece of Mrs. Vandeventer."

1925 "Mrs. O. J. VanDeventer of Loveland came to Longmont today to visit her mother, Mrs. A. L. Hard."

November 1927 "Mr. and Mrs. J. A. VanDeventer returned yesterday from Torrington, Wyoming, where they have been visiting since Saturday with their son and wife. Mr. and Mrs. O. R. VanDeventer. The Longmonter's report good roads and say they did not encounter any snow."

Oct. 20 1930 "Walter J. Vandeventer, 63, prominent and well to do retired farmer of Stella, died Saturday evening while being taken to a hospital at Falls City, after having been struck by an automobile. He had accidentally stepped in front of the machine. Vandeventer kept some cows and had a few milk customers to whom he was making deliveries at the time of the accident.
The Vandeventer home is one of the show places of Stella, and his family has been among the most prominent in southeastern Nebraska since the earliest pioneer days. His father and grandfather were settlers here in the 'fifties and five generations have been represented in this vicinity.
Funeral services will be held at the Community church Tuesday afternoon and will be conducted by Elder J. W. Sapp of Brownvllle, assisted by Rev. Edwin L. Darley of Stella. Burial will be at Prairie Union cemetery.
He is survived by his widow. Relatives arriving for the funeral include a brother, A1 Vandeventer from Longmont, Colo.; Dr. and Mrs. Grant Williams, Omaha, cousins; Reuben Vandeventer, Jewell county, Kansas, an uncle; the family of Charles E. Mason, Lincoln, brother-in-law, Lester Vandeventer, Stella, is a nephew and was reared in the home as a son."


John Albert Van Deventer 1864-1934 is buried in Longmont # 60886254, with Rosa (Belevan) Van Deventer 1866-1940 # 60886255.

So is Ethel Bell Young 1900-1993 # 60887808, with Fred J. Young 1896-1982.

George R. Van Deventer, 20, married Luanna Greenly in Boulder County on December 17, 1913.

They had Alvin D. Van Deventer on July 21, 1916 in Longmont.
In 1930 Goshen County, Wyoming, George is a mechanic for road graders, 35, with Luanna 34 Alvin 13, Lloyd 1, Arthur J. 5, and Fern R. 15, all six born in Colorado.

In 1940, they're in Los Angeles County, George 46 a mechanic, 46, Luanna 45. Fern R. Roberts is 25 - unknown marital status. Alvin is a machinist, Lloyd a solicitor, Arthur 15 born in Wyoming. A cousin Herbert M. Cullen 35 born in Colorado is with them, also a machinist.
(Herbert, born January 12, 1905 in Longmont, son of J. O. Cullen 1876-1914 #60879695 and Mabel (Elliott) (Cullen) Purdy, was sentenced to San Quenton in 1942, dying December 24, 1971 in Gainesville, Texas, to be buried in Mannsville, Johnston County, Oklahoma.)
One tree said that Joseph O. and Mabel Cullen had Leota Cullen on March 28, 1903 in Seibert, Colorado.

In 1910 Johnson County, Nebraska, Joseph is 34, Mabel 25, Belle 7, Herbert 5, -both born in Colorado - Fernie 2, and Elsie eight months both born in Nebraska.

Leota (Lolita) Belle Moser, born March 28, 1903 in Colorado, died October 25, 1990 in Toulome, California.

In 1940 Los Angeles, Lolita Johnson is divorced, 37, born in Colorado, housekeeper to Percy Moser 32, also divorced, born inCalifornia. Pery was in California in 1935, Lolita in Denver.
She's buried in Sonora, Toulomne County, # 114372990, with Percy B. Moser 1907-1981.

George, born April 8, 1893, died in Los Angeles County on May 24, 1961.

Luanna Olivia Vandeventer, born April 18, 1894 in Colorado, father Greenly, mother Shafer, died July 13, 1982 in San Bernardino County.

Alvin was a machinist in 1951 Pomona, California, with Lois E. at 330 S. Reservoir Avenue.
Alvin died May 14, 1993 in Clackamas County, Oregon - spouse Lois.

September 26, 1940 Denver St. John's Parish "Owen Vandeventer and Miss Monniger were married before Father Moran Wednesday. John J. McCormick, Jr. and Dorothy Thomson were the witnesses."

"Owen J. Vandeventer, 86, of Apple Valley, passed on to be with the Lord Jesus on April 8, 2004. He was a quiet man, who was characterized by goodness and mercy. Once you were his friend, he revered you forever. His way of showing his love of others was to contribute to needs through charitable contributions. Most of his life he contributed to institutions trying to help the Indian people. Owen was born in Longmont, Colorado, March 11, 1918. He grew up in Loveland, Colo., and as a young man attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. He married 'Lari' Monninger in 1940. They celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary together. Lari and their offspring, Gale Edward and Janice Leigh, preceded Owen in death. During World War II, Owen moved his family to Long Beach and he worked on shipbuilding as a welder. He was a corporal in the California State Guard. After the war, he did accounting for the Long Beach Credit Association, which later was purchased by TRW. Then he became a controller for Warehousing Service Inc., in Los Angeles. In the 1970s, the Vendeventers' weekend retreat was in Apple Valley, so upon retirement in the 1980s, they had built a permanent home. Owen became a member of The Church of the Valley. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee; his daughter-in-law, Phyllis Vandeventer; and three grandsons, Robert, Peter and Michael. For those who knew him well, he was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley. "

Cecil M. Van Deventer married Della Plumb on January 14, 1920 in Canyon County, Idaho.

Cecil M. VanDeventer is a carpenter in 1930 Los Angeles, 33, married to Della I. 31, both born in Colorado.
Cecil died at age 38 in Los Angeles County on November 5, 1934.

January 14, 1940 Lindsay, California " Jan 13. Miss Muriel Rogers and Homer VanDeventen, both of this city, were married on New Years Eve in the parsonage of the Methodist Church in Yuma, Arizona. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. entile Marten and the bridegroom a son of Mrs. Della VanDeventer of Lindsay. The marriage 'as announced to fellow employees at the Lindsay Ripe Olive plant when the couple entertained on Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. VanDeventer will reside on Central Avenue and establish a home in Lindsay."
