Several days ago, Mr. Smith went down to Denver’s city hall and paid $21.50 in taxes on his home. Thousands of other citizens came down to pay their taxes, but Mr. Smith's appearance was remarkable inasmuch as it was the 68th time he and his father before him had paid taxes on the same house. Together, father and son have paid the city four times what the house is worth today. The Smith house was built in 1873, after the family decided to tear down the log cabin in which they were living on the same site. In 1875, the house was valued at $3,000. Today it is worth $520??.
