"Chas. Madden aged 35, quarried with a nineteen-year-old boy named Jesse Rowley, and the boy struck him. Sam Rowley, the boy's father, was leaning against a telephone pole with his arms folded. Madden, instead of paying any attention to the boy, turned and struck the elder Rowley on the neck, making him groggy. In this condition Sam started for his team, hitched some distance away, but there was a buggy in the way and as he passed around this he met Ralph Madden, a brother of Charley, and Raiph began to hammer him with his fists. Rowley continued to make his way toward his team with Ralph Madden following and striking him, until Rowley finally fell to his knees. In this condition Madden stood over him and rained fifteen or twenty blows upon his neck, until Rowley sank to the ground and died. While this was going on two of the Madden brothers tried to keep back anybody who tried to interfere, though one of the other brothers named Fred ran in and pulled Ralph away, but was himself thrown ten or twelve feet. Another young fellow named Roy Graves also rushed in and tried to stop the fight.
Mrs. Rowley was somewhere in the crowd with her children, and saw her husband pounded to death. Ralph and Charlie Madden are now under arrest charged with murder in the first degree, and will doubtless pay for that afternoon's work by long years in the penitentiary."
