William G. and Ella Calnon, 7 South 50 West
One family member posted: "William Grace Calnon was born 28 June 1852 in Galena, Illinois. He married Elleda Maria Mann on 28 June 1876 in Tybille, IA. He died on 27 April 1942 in Salem, Oregon. Michael Calnon was his father and was born around 1826. Michael Calnon's wife was Bridget Haley who was born around 1830. Ellada Maria Mann was born 11 Aug 1856 in Sedalia, Missouri and died 4 May 1919 in Decatur NE. Her father was Lt. William Mann who was born around 1830. Ellada's mother was Isabella Brown Pike who was born 26 Nov 1832 in New York state." She was the sister of Ellen (Mann) (McElroy) Stephenson. Ellen married Michael Stephenson born in Parke County, Indiana March 4, 1835. Michael married Matilda Ramsey of Indiana on October 5, 1857, having Mary, Margaret, Oscar and Omer. Matilda died January 22, 1897. Then Michael married Flora McElroy, widow of James McElroy who died in 1893. |
Mark B. Calnon, age 96, of Meridian, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015. He was born August 21, 1918 in Meridian to Clarence and Jessie Calnon. He attended Meridian schools. Since there were no school buses in those days, he thought it unique in the way he traveled the two miles to school. Mark rode a street car, bicycle, horse and walked to school. After high school, he attended the University of Idaho, graduating in 1940. Faced with the military draft, Mark volunteered for the Army Air Corps. After a short stint as a weather observer, he went into pilot training. He became a B-17 pilot and was sent to England where he flew with the Eighth Air Force. His plane was shot down over Germany on October 9, 1943. Of his crew, three were killed and four were wounded. He was captured and spent over 18 months including two Christmases as a prisoner of war. Mark survived the so called Death March during the winter of 1944-45. He was proud to have served his country in time of war. After the war, Mark married Helen Ann Sutton of Weiser and they had two children, Kathleen and Mark Jr. He was employed by the University of Idaho Extensions Service in Ada County. His primary duty was the 4-H Club Program. He retired in 1973, Professor Emeritus. He remained on his farm and maintained a small flock of sheep. He was active in co-operative marketing of wool and lambs. He lived his entire life in the same house where he was born. He appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and going on back packing trips. Mark is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Kostka of Meridian and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ann; his brother, Wilbur and his son, Mark Calnon, Jr. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 15th at Meridian Cemetery.
