Horton L. and Mable A. (Brown) Anderson, 7 South 50 West



HORTON

Horton's mother is "Amanda" in 1860 Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, with Ansel 51 and Elizabeth 49. Emily is 31, Charles 26, James 23, Calvin 21, tgreadway 20, John 16, Eleanor 14, Amanda 12, Almira 10, Mary 8, Lorenzo 6, and Harriet 4.

Ansel is buried in Susquehanna COunty # 148355472, with Elizabeth (Bunnell) Gay 1812-1864.

"Montrose Democrat Newspaper, 5 Oct. 1883. The populace were thrilled with the sad intelligence Sunday morning, September 23, 1883, of the sudden death of Ansel Gay, of South Auburn,. The remains were deposited beside his beloved wife on Bunnell Hill. Mr. Gay was the father of 16 children, nine of whom remain to mourn the loss of an affectionate parent and a good citizen."

Ansel Gay, b. 31 Aug 1809, Warren, Herkimer Co, NY; d. 21 Sep 1883, S. Auburn, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna Co, PA; b. 25 Sep 1883, Bunnell Hill Cem, Vosburg, Meshoppen Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. Ansel began clearing land in S. Auburn in 1830; he was postmaster in S. Auburn in 1850. He married Elizabeth Bunnell, b. 3 Nov 1812 in Delaware, d. 19 Apr 1864/1865, bur. Bunnell Hill Cem, Vosburg, Meshoppen Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. They are buried in the Solomon Bunnell Burial Plot. I have record of 17, not 16 children, some of whom settled in Bradford County. Census and other records show that Elizabeth was born in Delaware, New Jersey and PA. Her grandfather Bunnell was born in NJ.

In 1880 Kearney County, Nebraska, Newark precinct, John Anderson is farming, 37, with Armina 34, Blenna 13, Beecher 11, Horton 10, Orr 8, Oscar 6, Sarama 4, and Francis 2.
(Newark is the precinct where my grandfather Albert Monk lived)
John Anderson and Armina A. Anderson (born Gay). John was born on August 24 1843, in Pittston, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. Armina was born on March 4, 1848, in Auburn, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.
One researcher quotes a death notice in the Kearney County, Nebraska, "Bee" on December 4, 1880.
"Died Tuesday night, about 12 o'clock, Mrs. John Anderson, of inflamation of the bowels. She was sick only a short time. She leaves a large family of small children. One baby two weeks old, who has since been adopted by Mr. & Mrs. William Chaney.
The funeral was held Tuesday at 11 o'clock at the residence, with a Minister from the city of Kearney, Nebraska.
This was a severe blow to the father as they buried a young daughter just a few months ago."

John, per one tree, died June 1, 1913 in Fort Dodge, Ford County, Kansas.
It said he had married Harriet E. Patterson, 29, on October 30, 1885. They had Harriet in 1886, Bruce 1888, Joseph 1891, and Inez in 1893 all in Whiteside COunty, Illinois, Ruth 1894 in Grundy County, Missouri, Louisa 1897 and Nesson 1899 in both in Polk County, Missouri.

John, a corporal in E, 54th Pennsylvania Infantry, enlisted 1863, discharged 1863. He's buried in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Dodge City # 37643261,
So is Harriet A. (Patterson) (Horton) (Anderson) Reed 1856-1947 # 37643317. "Harriet was the daughter of David and Marinda (Canfield) Patterson. Her mother died on 30 Jul 1864, while her father was serving in the Civil War. He was notified of his wife's death and soon after he died of a chronic illness. Six children were orphaned. Harriet went to live with her Aunt Luncinda (Canfield) Wheaton and her family.
First Husband: Daniel T. Horton about 1874. Daniel was a veteran of both the Mexican War and the Civil War. They had 3 known children: Myrtle May (b. 1875), Nellie (1877-1955), and Daniel Atlee (b. 1881). Daniel Atlee adopted the surname of his stepfather: Anderson. Apparently, this marriage ended in divorce.
Second Husband: John Anderson about 1884. John was also a Civil War veteran. They had at least 7 children: Hattie (b.1886), John Bruce (1888-1941), Joseph (b. 1891), Inez Viola (1893-1957), Ruth (b. 1894), Nelson (b. 1898), and Lonie (b, 1898). Marriage ended with his death in 1913.
Third Husband: Fred Gibson Reed between 1930 and 1940. He was 20 years her junior and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. They were probably married while both of them were residents of the Kansas Soldiers Home. Marriage ended with her death in 1947. "

"1880: Blennie & Armina died, Blennie died after census, but early, Armina died 30 Nov 1880 of inflamation of the bowels. John was given up for adoption to William & Mary Ann Chaney. Armina was buried either in Newark or Kearney, Buffalo Co."

MABLE

In 1880 New Castle County, Delaware, James Brown is farming 30, born in Delaware, Josephine 28 in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth C. is 7, Mabel A. is 5. Josephine's brother Charles Conoy 9 is with them.

Mable's sister is likely the Elizabeth C. (Brown) (Bedford) Mendenhall 1873-1942 buried in Wilmington, Delawar # 45655619.

Mable's father James Brown, born Sept 28, 1849 , a farmer, died in Farnhuuel, New Castle County on November 16, 1918.
He was buried in White Clay Creek cemetery.

Her mother Mary J. Brown, daughter of W.D. Conorg and Elizabeth Rodenbaugh, both of Pennsylvania, born May 5, 1852, died in New Castle County January 3, 1916, to be buried in White Clay Creek.

HORTON AND MABLE
Horton L. Anderson, 29, son of John and Annie, married Mable A. Brown, 24, daughter of James and Mary J., on October 26, 1899 in Delaware. Both were residents of Stanton, Delaware.

Horton and Mabel had Harry LeRoy Anderson on June 1, 1900 in New Castle County, Delaware. Mabel was born at Stanton, Delaware.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, Horton is farming, 40, born in Delaware, married fifteen years to Mable 35 Delaware. Bertha 14 and Harry 9 were born in Delaware, Harvey 8 in Illinois, Nannie 6 and Verdie 4 in Kansas, and newborn Mary in Colorado.

Horton claimed the south half of section 2, 7S 50W in 1913.


1914

In 1920 Whiteside County, Illinois, Horton is working in a machine shop, 49, Mabel 45, Harry 18 and James 17 in a machine shop, with Vannie 15, Alverta 14, and Mary 9.

In 1930, Horton 60 and Mabel A. 54 are in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, working in a farm machinery factory. Both his parents were born in Pennsylvania.

In 1940 Sterling, Horton is 70, living with daughter Mary Higby 29 and her husband Herbert 37 and their son John ten months old.
Mabel is living with daughter Alverta Emmitt, 34 and her husband Harold 30. Alverdie has Mary Alice 10, Lois 9, and Billy 5.

Horton, born March 15, 1870 in Mt. Pleasant Township, Illinois, died in Sterling, Illinois November 8, 1942, to be buried in Riverside cemetery. His father was John Anderson, mother Josephine Hays.

Mabel Brown, born January 26, 1879, died in April 1968.


Alverdie C. Emmit 1906-1987 is buried in Oak Knoll cemetery, Sterling, Illinois # 123742390, with Harold 1900-1981.

Mary E. (Anderson) Hibgy 1910-2002 is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Sterling, # 33909833.
"Mary E. Higby, 92, of 2517 Sanborn, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Higby was born April 16, 1910 in Siebert, Colorado, the daughter of Horton and Mabel (Brown) Anderson. She married Herbert J. Higby December 29, 1927 in Sterling. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1984. During WWII, she was a ship fitter in Portland, OR. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sterling and enjoyed crocheting and fishing. Surviving is one son, John H. Higby of Bettendorf, IA; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were a son, James, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in Sterling with the Reverend Christine Gilbert, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established. "

"EDITH EMELINE STAPLES was born September 11, 1905 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois, and died December 29, 1983 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois. She married JAMES H. ANDERSON September 04, 1928 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois, son of HORTON ANDERSON and MABEL BROWN. He was born April 04, 1902 in Rock Falls, Whiteside, Illinois, and died August 21, 1955 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois. "
Both are buried in Oak Knoll Cemetery, James # 121183225.

Vannie Josephine Hoffman, born Feb 24, 1904 at Wakeeney, Kansas to Horton L. Anderson born at Morrison , Illinois and Mabel Brown, died January 25, 1934 in Bureau County, Illinois, to be buried in WSalnut Cemetery. Her spouse was Milford Hoffman.
Milford Hoffman married Verna C. Carlson on October 15, 1937, and is buried in Walnut 1902-1993 # 63921245.
