August 17, 1932 Davenport, Iowa, " John C. Werden, 66, town clerk here for the past 15 years,
died at his home at 5:30 p. m. yesterday after a long? illness. He was prominent in community affairs,
having served for ten years as township assessor, several terms as president of the school board,
and as a member of the town council. Mr. Werden was born in Baldwin July 19, 1866.
In August, 1887, he and his brother, Jacob, went in a covered wagon to Colorado, where they took
government land. The decedent returned to Iowa in 1889. He was married to Lillian S. Chase in Baldwin on
March 26, 1896. The couple resided on farms near Baldwin until 1917, when they moved to town.
Mr. Werden was a member of the Modern Woodmen lodge.
Surviving are the widow, three sons, Max, Holyoke, Colo.; Bruce, Davenport; and Walter, Baldwin;
two brothers, Joseph, Davenport; and George, Monmouth, Ia,;, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Teeple and Mrs. Rose Teeple,
both of Baldwin; and two grandchildren."

Age: 25, born in Wisconsin to Peter Werden and Mary Bachdelor, married Mary E. Felker
on 28 Mar 1883 in Jackson, Iowa.
Jacob Werden had initiated a claim for a quarter in section 34 in 1887, but
it was completed by Orvil L. Jones.
