JOHN'S FAMILY

John Wafer was a son of the Emerald Isle, marrying Miss Elizabeth Early, having John in St. Louis. In 1876 they removed to Denver.

Bridget Gavey and "John Waser" married 23 Nov 1856 in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1870 St. Francois County, Missouri, John "Weafer" is a laborer in an iron mine, 40, born in Ireland, Bridget Weafer 34, Elizabeth Weafer 12, (her husband John McCarran was also a plumber in Denver.) Mary Weafer 8, born in Missouri, John Weafer 6, Patrick Weafer 4, James Tobin 35, and Dennis Folery 22.

March 29, 1929 Steamboat Springs "Mrs. Lucille Kirkpatrick, sister of Mrs. Maurice Leckenby, died in Denver Sunday after an illness of several months. Mrs. Kirkpatrick is survived by her husband, Vincent Kirkpatrick; a daughter, Shirley, 4 years old; a son, Jack, one year old; her father, J. J. Wafer; her sister and three brothers, William, John and George Wafer.
Maurice Leckenby went to Denver Monday to attend the funeral. "

Arvada "Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at nine thirty from the Horan & Son funeral parlors for Mrs. Lucille Kirkpatrick of Denver. Burial was made in the Fairmount cemetery. She was a cousin of Mrs. Elbert Allen of Ralston Road. "

ESTHER

April 1927 Steamboat Springs "Maurice W. Leckenby, formerly of the Pilot but now with the Associated Press in Denver, will be married today to Miss Esther Wafer, at the home of her father, J. J. Wafer, 1230 Milwaukee street, Denver. The bride attended Colorado college and is now employed in the office of State Auditor W. D. MacGinnis. Because of the recent death of the bride's mother the ceremony will be quiet. The young couple will spend a short honeymoon at the Broadmoor hotel, Colorado Springs, and then make their home in Denver. They expect to have a longer vacation during the summer which they will spend in Steamboat Springs."

April 30, 1964 "Death came to Esther Wafer Leckenby Saturday at Sands House Sanatorium in Denver, where she had been a patient since the first of the year. Mrs. Leckenby is the mother of Charles J. Leckenby, publisher and editor of the Steamboat Pilot, and wife of the late Maurice Leckenby. Mrs. Leckenby had been ill with cancer for two years and had entered Presbyterian Hospital previous to the death of her husband in September, where she remained until she was removed to Sands House. She had been in a coma for several weeks before her death Saturday.
The former Esther Wafer was born June 13, 1897 in Ottawa, Illinois and moved with her parents, as a small child, to Denver. She attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs and was working in the Statehouse when she met and married Maurice Leckenby April 20, 1927. Mr. Leckenby was then a political reporter for the Rocky Mountain News. Charles, an only child, was born in 1933. The family moved to Steamboat Springs when Maurice took over the Pilot from his father, Charles H. Leckenby in 1946. Mrs. Leckenby was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, Ladies Recreation Club, P. E. O., and a past member of the Lady Lions. She was well known and respected in her community, as well as throughout the State of Colorado.
Surviving, in addition to her son, are two grandchildren, Erin snd Laura; one brother. George Wafer of Denver, and a niece, Shirley Cross, also of Denver.
Rosary for Mrs. Leckenby will be said at 8:00 p. m. Thursday in Olinger Mortuary, Magnolia Street. Requiem high mass will be said at 10:00 a. m. Friday in St. Philomena;s Church. Burial will be in Fairmont. A high requiem mass for Mrs. Leckenby will be sung at the Holy Name Church in Steamboat Spgs. at 9:00 a. m. Thursday morning with the Reverend Kenneth Funk as celebrant."

February 1952 Steamboat Springs "George Wafer and two children, Sue and Billy, and Miss Judy Bardwell of Denver enjoyed the winter Carnival. Mr. Wafer is a brother of Mrs. Maurice Leckenby."

April 1956 "Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Leckenby attended the wedding of Carole Sue Wafer and Victor Thomas in Denver Monday. The bride is a niece of Mrs. Leckenby and has visited here on several occasions."

Victor and Carole divorced in 1974.

"Victor C. "Buddy" Thomas of Englewood, formerly of Broomfield, died July 15, 1994. He was 65. He was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Pueblo. When he was a teenager, his family moved from Denver to Limon. He earned an academic scholarship at the University of Colorado, where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Thomas served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict and retired after 20 years as a major. He also served in the National Guard. Thomas played football briefly with the Washington Redskins.
He moved back to Colorado and in 1956 married Carol Sue Wafer. They had three sons. Thomas began his career at the McCoy Co., where he sold heavy equipment and became vice president of operations. He worked 22 years at the company. In 1977, Thomas started TAR CO Inc. with Everett Randleman. The company specialized in highway and other heavy construction projects and was involved in the building of Denver International Airport. In 1986, he married Judi Curzon, and they traveled extensively. He was president of the CU Alumni “C" Club, president of the Colorado Army and Air National Guard Officers Association, and he served on the board of directors of the CU Alumni Association. Thomas was past president of the Colorado Contractors Association and in 1992 was named Colorado Contractor of the Year.
He is survived by: his wife; three sons, Marc, Todd and Lance, a Broomfield chiropractor; his mother, Dorothy of Englewood; and a brother, John, of Winter Park, Florida."
