Kit Carson County Pioneers:

George F. Shotwell, Trumbull S. Shotwell, 7 South 49 West

"Some of the names familiar to old timers were: W.R. Linford, S.L. Howell, D.C. Waltner, Nobel, Fisher, Corrall, Gardner, Thomas, Shaffer, Gunther, Deakins, Bryant, Phillips, Vernon, Pickenpaugh, Shotwell, Bun, and Besdecker. At that time, the settlers went clear to Haigler, Nebr. for provisions, and hauled water from a spring on Hell Creek, about 15 mi. Northwest of Vona."

George claimed a quarter in section 23, Trumbull one in section 24, 7S 49W, both in 1911.

November 1897 Grand Junction, Colorado
"A Sucker Korn Every Minute.
There was a foot race last night. It cost two people one hundred dollars and their return was great quantities of experience. Charlie Huston was formerly a resident of this city, a local sprinter when here. He returned on a visit and of course his ability as a sprinter was discussed.
Walter Garretson, a gentleman of leisure, thought that he could secure a man who could beat Huston. Garretson and Huston were apparent strangers. The man secured was Charlie Kitzmiller.
A backer being necessary, George Shotwell of the Plateau was seen and he put up $75 on Kitzmiller.
Here is the milk in the cocoanut. Shotwell and Garretson, the former the dupe, the latter the man of business, had agreed between themselves and Huston that Kitzmiller should be allowed to win, but Garretson and Huston agreed that they would win.
In other words, the latter agreement was the first agreement, but Shotwell did not know anything of this game in which he war playing sucker.
The race was run last night down at the city hall. Kitzmiller was to have four yards start in a hundred. The first heat run, it is claimed, Kitzmiller won. but the confidence men claimed a dead heat.
in the second heat Kitzmiller wasn't in it, Huston getting right away from him. Huston and Carretson got the boodle.
Huston had no more business here and left town last night.
It takes a mighty smart man to play with professional sprinting. It is the least honorable sport in America and men who have any sporting proclivities whatever, give sprinting a wide berth."

RUTH'S FAMILY

In 1880 Rooks County, Kansas, James F. Clough 34 is a publisher, Mary L. Clough 31 Wife, Edward E. Clough 6 Son, Ranth E. Clough 5 Daughter, and Willis F. Clough 4 Son.

"J. F. CLOUGH, editor Nemaha County Republican, and postmaster of Sabetha, was born 1847, in Oxford, Ohio, and at fifteen, while an attendant of the village school, he enlisted in the Sixty-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving from 1861 to 1864. He was twice shot at the battle of Mission Ridge, both balls striking him simultaneously, crushing his left shoulder and piercing both lungs. After about a year in hospital, he received his honorable discharge. Founded the Monroeville, Ohio, Spectator in 1870, sold out in 1876, and in the fall of that year started the Republican at Sabetha. It is a seven column quarto, straight Republican in politics, and a well conducted and popular county newspaper. Mr. Clough has been postmaster since August, 1877."

"The Nemaha County 'Republican' was established at Sabetha, on October 5, 1876 by James F. Clough. On the first day of June during the following year, J.C. Hebbard, formerly of Seneca and later of Topeka, became Associate Editor, a position which he held for about one year."

It is not likely that he is the one claimed a quarter in sections 22 and 27, 1S 1E of the Ute survey in 1891 - Mesa County, Colorado.

Mary L. Clough claimed 160 acres in section 17, 2S 72W - Gilpin County - in 1873.

April 1873 "Mary L. Clough writes to the Revolution from Colorado, giving an encouraging account of the progress of opinion in favor of woman suffrage in the territory since she has been here, not quite a year. She thinks the cause is to be “slowly but surely advanced by being kept before the people." This is just what we told its last advocates when they wanted to rush it through the legislature before the people had given any thought to it, after the style of the crafty democratic demagogues in Wyoming. Miss or Mrs. Clough says that when she first came to this territory "I found myself in a continual state of antagonism with somebody or something, and always bristling in a suit of armor, waging defensive and offensive warfare everywhere.” And she complains that the women are in such a state of imbecility they will not take the trouble to think about their rights; and most of those who do give it any attention perversely "contend against their own elevation." Like most fair advocates of woman suffrage, she begs the question at the start. The women are yet to be convinced that political life would elevate them. They fear it would have just the opposite effect."
