In 1920 Kit Carson County, Jess E., Nora E. and Paul E. are still farming. They are on the same page as Lola Miller (housekeeper of John McNeill, who she later married.)

July 1929 Frederick, Maryland "An early report said 12 persons were believed to have lost their lives. A Railroad report said seven passengers and a porter were in the car. One train, carrying several passengers hit a weakened bridge near here early this morning and after two locomotives, a baggage car, and a chair car passed over the structure, a chair car plunged into the stream which had become a raging torrent 10 feet deep and 100 yards wide. From the second car only one person emerged. One man broke a window and bleeding from many cuts swam to safety. More than a score of persons were injured. Another car was thrown of the tracks. The rest of the coaches were upright and on the tracks. A cloudburst last night, releasing seven or eight inches of water, turned an ordinary sand draw into a raging, swirling around the 75-foot wooden bridge over the draw. The water ate away the approaches and when the heavy train rolled over the structure it gave way. Rescuers were delayed by the flood waters which .... Railroad officials said recovery of the bodies would be attempted after the water had gone down sufficiently to make rescue work safe. The officials said they had obtained the last names of three of the dead which were Read, Miller, and Bradford. The railroad was asked to notify Jess Miller of Seibert Col., apparently a relative of the dead named Miller. These three were taken from the submerged Pullman."

Jess and Nora are in 1930 Kit Carson County, Jess doing odd jobs.

They're still there in 1940 and 1950.

NOV 29 1948; "Jess Miller, 79-year-old Seibert, Colo., filling station operator, goes on trial Tuesday at Colorado Springs on charges he shot to death Eugene Bill Chance, 43, as the aftermath of a practical joke. Miller is the oldest man ever to face a murder charge in El Paso county. Chance was a wealthy wheat grower. Miller is expected to plead self-defense.; (Photo By The Denver Post via Getty Images)"

The Wilmore (Comanche County, Kansas) News, October 15, 1948.
"BILL CHANCE SHOT BY COLO. SERVICE STATION OWNER
Comanche County people were shocked last Sunday to learn that Bill Chance, who had been a resident of the Wilmore community since 1931, had been shot to death in Siebert, Colo., last Saturday afternoon by Jess Miller, a 79 year old filling station operator in that city.
Mr. Chance died instantly from a .22 caliber rifle, the bullet entering his head near one eye. According to reports, Chance and two ranch companions were joking Mr. Miller about his handlebar mustache and Miller warned them to leave and not bother him or he would shoot the first man that came closer than the gasoline pumps.
Chance, jokingly, as he always did, told Miller that he did not have the nerve to shoot. Chance advanced to within two feet of the doorway and Miller fired without bringing the gun to his shoulder. A coroner's jury returned a verdict that death was felonious.
On Monday of this week many friends attended the military services held in Siebert by the John Wrenn Post No. 6492, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of which Bill was a member. Friends attending the services, now living in Colorado and who were former residents of this county, included Mr. and Mrs. Henry York of Hugo, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Huckelbridge of Genoa, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Jarnagin of Siebert, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Jarnagin of Burlington and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Bramlett and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bramlett of Flagler, Colo. -- Western Star"

" Another interesting resident of Seibert was Miller. Jess claimed to be related to the notorious Jesse James. He also claimed to have killed a man in Missouri. He did kill a man in Seibert in 1948. Jess had a filling station on the northwest corner of the intersection of Highways 59 and 24. He also Jess sold "historical" relics and had a cottage camp. Diagonally across from Jess's filling There are many unmarked graves in the section which we have no way of identifying in any way. So it is very possible there were others before our records indicate."
