"Dorothy Calhoun Creashaw age 99 died peacefully on Friday February 25 2011 at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center Raleigh NC Mrs Crenshaw was born in Winston Missouri on May 5 1911 the daughter of Elizabeth Steele Calhoun and Lemuel Perkins Calhoua After receiving a degree from the Northern Illinois School of Optometry in Chicago Illinois Mrs Crenshaw moved to Forest City NC in 1933 when she opened her own optometry practice probably the first female optometry practice in North Carolina Her mother and sister Eleanor left Missouri and joined her the following year On December 31 1945 Dorothy married Herbert W Crenshaw of Spindale NC and they lived happily together until he died in 1987 Mrs Crenshaw was a true pioneer and an inspiration to all who knew her She was a woman of faith courage and love After selling her optometry practice in 1960 she was elected to the Rutherford County School Board the first woman to serve on that board Mrs Crenshaw served her Lord early on as treasurer of the Methodist Church in Forest City and later in life as an elder in the Forest City and Black Mountain Presbyterian Churches She was a cancer survivor of multiple life-threatening cancers She did all this with grace and humility while lovingly raising two sons Mrs Crenshaw is survived by her sons Richard C Crenshaw and wife Brenda of Clover SC and Herbert W Crenshaw Jr and wife Mary Ann of Raleigh NC She is also survived by her loving sister Eleanor Matheny of Columbus NC and Eleanors son David W Matheny of Lake Lure NC wife Linda son David and daughter Tami and daughter Alice M Lancaster husband Martin and daughters Ashley and Mary She is also survived by five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren whom she dearly loved: Ragan Goff husband Tony and daughter Tori of Cedar Park Texas Chris Crenshaw wife Julie and son Connor of Raleigh NC Richard J Crenshaw of Charlotte NC Cari Crenshaw and Kristin Crenshaw of Raleigh NC The family extends special thanks to Mrs Crenshaws faithful and loving caregiver Harriet Burrell and her family as well as to the caregivers and staff at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center who provided her with loving care and attention during the four years she was there A funeral service for Mrs Crenshaw will be held at one o’clock Monday February 28 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Forest City NC with interment to follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City NC The family will receive friends from 12:15 pm until the hour of service in the Ladies Parlor of the church."

ELINOR

"Judge Wade Bostic Matheny, 93, of Forest City, died Wednesday Dec. 2, 1998. Judge Matheny was born on Jan. 26, 1905, In the Mt. Pleasant commu nity of Rutherford County and was the third oldest, and only surviving one, of the 10 children of the late John and Arrfe Kennedy Matheny, Judge Matheny earned his A.B. degree from Wake Forest College and his Bachelor of Laws ludgs W. Matheny North Carolina, of which he later became a trustee. For two years, he taught at Central High School and all his life considered teaching the highest calling. After serving as Rutherford County Solicitor, he served three terms In the North. Carolina Senate, was District Court Judge for 10 years and was engaged In business and farming for 62 years. For 65 years, he taught Sunday school and for many years served as , a deacon at First Baptist Church. A member of the Forest City Ki-wanis Club for 67 years, he served as president and was the recipient of the club's citizenship award In 1937 and again In 1943. In March 1987, he delivered the centennial address for Forest City. In 1990, he received an award from the Forest City Chamber of Commerce for service to the community. In 1959, while he was serving as chairman of the local school board, he began a study of the need in the county for an Industrial education center to train those students who dropped out of school or who did not want to go to college. A committee, chaired by Matheny, solicited support from citizens and industries all over the county. In 1961, the Industrial education center, which later became Isothermal Community College, was established in Avondale. His son-in-law, former Congressman H. Martin Lancaster, is currently the president of the North Carolina Community College System. Judge Matheny Is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor Calhoun Matheny; his son, David Matheny and daughter-in-law. Linda Harton Matheny; his daughter, Alice Matheny Lancaster and son-in-law, H. Martin Lancaster and four grandchildren, Taml Matheny of Spartanburg, S.C., David Matheny of Wilmington, Ashley Elizabeth and Mary Martin Lancaster of Cary, both students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hil Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4r 1998, at First Baptiet Church, with the Rev. Albert Young and Dr. M B. Morrow Jr., officiating. Interment was at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were the Matheny Bible Sunday School Class. The Forest City Krwanis Club served as honorary escort A family tribute was given by the four grandchildren."
