"On Monday May 11, 2015 Caroll A. Messerli passed away
with family at her side. She is survived by her son
Lee Douglas Messerli of San Diego, her daughter Claudia Baker
of Bowie, grandson Tery Baker, of Jefferson, MD, his wife
Christine and their three sons Matthew, Nicholas and Cody;
granddaughter Cassandra Baker of Hagerstown,
her husband Christophe and their daughter Josephine,
and Caroll's brother Willis Griffee of Colorado Springs,
her nieces, Roberta Griffee and Karen Morris,
also of Colorado.
Caroll was born February 14, 1918 in the small rural town
of Brewster, KS where she happily spent her early childhood
years on her family's farms and in her father's General Store.
Her family moved to Colorado Springs during her elementary
school years. She studied piano and organ until she graduated
from Colorado Springs High School in 1936. She was a church
organist at age thirteen and accompanist for numerous school
and community groups. She received a music scholarship
from the Sherwood School of Music upon graduation from
high school. In the summer of 1936 she married her fiancé
Glen Messerli and soon afterward they moved to Denver and
started their family.
Caroll was active in school and community activities
in the Denver suburb of Englewood where they lived.
She was a PTA President and was successful in starting
the first cafeteria and hot lunch program in her
children's school. She was a member of the Leota Club,
a women's service organization.
She remained active in her musical interests in church
and community groups.
After living in Denver for approximately thirteen years
her husband's employment took them to San Diego.
Caroll worked for 30 years as a pharmacy tech and
department manager for a major drug store chain in
San Diego. During that time she was also an active
member and advocate for the Retail and Drug Clerks
Union of San Diego.
After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed
traveling in their motor home. She was a founding
member of Faith United Methodist Church in Mira Mesa,
a San Diego suburb. The church started meeting in
private homes, storefronts and schools before finally
obtaining a permanent facility. She served on many
committees and boards and was a choir member and
organist. Her great joy was single-handedly oiling
and polishing all of the wood rails and pieces of
the altar in the permanent church-a true labor of
love.
She was predeceased by her husband Glen in 1997.
She moved in June of 2000 to the home of her
daughter Claudia in Bowie where she lived until the
time of her death. She was a fifteen year member
of St. Matthew's United Church in Bowie where
she was a choir member, a member of Martha Circle,
served on the Admin Board and was involved in
many other church activities. She was also a
member of the Bowie Senior Chorale. She had a
lifelong love for gardening, she was an extreme
baseball fan, and above all she loved her family.
She was known for her upbeat outlook and always
had a ready smile or humorous comment for her wide circle of friends. She will
be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00
a.m. on Friday June 12, 2015 at St. Matthew's
United Church, 14900 Annapolis Road,
Bowie, Maryland. "
