SAMUEL AND CLARA
Clara A. Hammond and Samuel M. Firestone married
1 Jan 1900 in DeKalb County, Indiana.
They are farming there in the 1900 census.
"
In the spring or early summer of 1906, we went to Lawrence Co. Tennessee, and together with
Mrs. Firestone's preacher brother, bought a 200 acre farm which we divided. This tract was good land, contained a rather valuable tract of timber, remarkable spring water, was fertile, and we hoped to have it for our future home. Mr. or Rev. Hammond died and since both tracts have been sold.
From 1908 to 1911 we homesteaded and proved up on by paying out on a 160 acres in Kit Carson County, Colorado, 11 1/2 miles north of Siebert, Colorado. This we finally sold, it being too far away to see after, and I went to see the location later on in 1936 and again did so in 1947. Uncle Charley accompanied me 1947.
In 1910 we left Long Beach for California, lived there about 6 weeks and moved to Los Angeles. It was while there that I was employed by the Pacific Electric Railway Co., acting for the most part as lineman foreman. This was on a gang ox 325 men. At Whittier, Calif., I was told that a young man and his sister by the name of Firestone, attended high school there, and that he resembled me enough to be, not only a brother, but a twin. I never got to see and know them. I wish I could have -- too busy.

"Mrs. Samuel Firestone, Fresno, aged 44, died at home Saturday, after a long illness
from a diabetic ailment, from which she had suffered for the past five years.
Mrs. Firestone took seriously ill at the Richmond reunion one week before her death.
Clara A. Hammond was born September 15, 1875, near Hamilton, De Kalb Co., Indiana. She was
united in marriage to Rev. Samuel M. Firestone January 1, 1900. Mrs. Firestone was a member of
the methodist episcopal Church, having united with that body at the age of 12.
She was a noble and talented Christian woman, and assisted her husband in his religious services
until her death. Mrs. Firestone had lived in Kentucky, New Mexico and many different parts of
California. While living in these various places, she assisted her husband in preaching the gospel
and conducting evangelistic services. One daughter, Marie Firestone of the home in Fresno survives.
The funeral services were conducted at the late home in Fresno at p. M. Monday.
The body following the funeral services will be taken to Indiana where burial will made at her old
home place."
"Clara A. Hammond, daughter of James Alexander Spears and Eleanor Hammond, was born September 15, 1875, near Hamilton, Steuben County, Indiana; departed this life, August 21, 1920, at Fresno, Coshocton County, Ohio.
On January 1, 1900, she was united in marriage to Samuel M., Firestone. In 1904 they moved to Kansas, later on, homesteaded in Colorado, and spent some time in California and New Mexico.
While Mrs. Firestone joined the church at 12, she later made this notation on the fly--leaf of her Bible: "December 15, 1899, justified; November 26, 1906, sanctified--Clara." Her testimony, while modest, continued firm to the last.
Directly, and indirectly through her, her husband was called into the Methodist ministry. Her mutual helpfulness and co-operation was heroic, both while he attended college at Willmore, Kentucky, and later on in the field of action. She felt called to sing the gospel story and was unusually gifted and effective. Together they labored in the Kentucky and Northeast Ohio conferences, besides doing some outside evangelistic work. Less than a week before her final departure, she accompanied him for the last time on the circuit.
During her lifetime, she suffered severe attacks of measles, scarlet and typhoid fever, etc., and finally fell a victim to that dreaded disease, diabetes. She received special attention at St. Luke's Hospital, Cleveland, and from various local physicians, but a carbuncle on the spine lapsed her into a coma and hastened the end. She passed out as a gentle breeze on a fair June day.
The Rev. George W. Orcutt, district superintendent, conducted funeral services at the Fresno M. E. Church, Rev. M. B. Mead preached the sermon, seven other ministers attending and assisting. Music was furnished by the circuit parishioners. Two sisters from Indiana attended,
The remains were taken to Indiana, interment being made in the family cemetery at Hamilton. Reverends H. R. Corson and Thomas Davies."
