LORRAINE

2007 Taft Oil Workers Museum
" By the time of the dinner was served at the annual Museum dinner at the West Side Recreation and Park District Community Banquet Room, nearly 200 people were seated at five long tables and a head table, beautifully decorated by Ruth and Don Dudley. A delicious dinner, being raved by everybody, was prepared by Taft's Sonny Polard. The students of the Taft Union High School Oil Technology class were helping out with various chores under the direction of Rick Woodson, their high school instructor and the head of this program. Ron Bracken, the chairman of the museum board was in charge at the podium, making the introductions, including Fred Holmes, member of the museum board and the president of the Independent Oil Producers organization, who introduced the speaker, Alan White an employee of the Occidental Petroleum Co. at Elk Hills -- a giant West Side oil field. White told about his experiences while working on a program drilling deep wells over the volcano at Mammoth Lake area and at the earthquake capitol of America where they are drilling down to the San Andreas Fault to place earthquake monitoring equipment in the drilled hole. The treasurer's report of Dorothy Gardner was given by Pat Bracken in Gardner's absence because of a family illness. The report indicates that the museum is on firm footing and nearing the time when there will be enough money available when the interest from these funds will be enough to hire a full-time curator. Seated at our end of one of the tables across from Phyllis Toft, Pete Gianopulos and Doug Keeler, the editor of Taft's Midway Driller newspaper, who was introduced, were Dean Van Zant and his daughter from Bakersfield, Maxine Turner and Art Carlton. The Driller will be 100 years old early in the year 2010, the same year when the City of Taft was incorporated and will be celebrating its 100th birthday in October of 2010. Van Zant is much involved with the Petroleum Production Pioneer's organization as an oil field historian and the secretary of the Bakersfield Masonic Service Bureau -- the later organization which puts on Masonic funerals for members. He can be found at all of the West Kern Oil Museum activities and is very interested in all the museum's programs. Another of his recent activities is to record the personal histories of oil pioneers through a publication that he is publishing once a month. Others that were there were Fred Kalenborn of Bakersfield, former Chevron employee, and Claude Fildler, the head man of Chevron while located in Bakersfield who could be seen chatting with the long-time secretary of the head men of Chevron, Lorraine Dolan, who it is said was the one who was so knowledgeable about the company that the bosses relied on her to keep the company running smoothly and the bosses out of trouble. Then, there was Bruce Holmes, the Maricopa historian, lecturer and after dinner speaker. Also being introduced was Dave Noerr, Taft City Councilman and Susie Geiger, Public Affairs spokes-person for Occidental Petroleum at Elk Hills."
