Smith and his family, a wife and three children had been making their home with Mrs. Smith's father, Dan Mansfield, one mile south and a quarter mile east of Hale. When Smith failed to come to the house for dinner a search of the place was made and his lifeless body was found in the hay loft. He had taken his own life having used a 22-caliber revolver.
