Leonard A. Sandry, 7 South 45 West



Leonard cash-claimed a quarter in section 28, 7S 45W in 1891.

He might be the Leonard Sandry 1864-1897 buried in Allamakee, Iowa # 21256685.
" Instead of the customary gladsome greetings on New Year's day the dark shadow of death encircled the home of Hon. A. Sandry of this township, his son Leonard, aged about 31 years, having died the previous evening. Deceased had been ailing off and on for a number of years. He was the third son and his demise is the first break in the completed golden family circle of five sons and five daughters. This makes the loss all the harder. Mr. and Mrs. Sandry have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon, interment taking place in May's Prairie cemetery."

Leonard was in Allamakee County, Iowa in 1870, with Andreas Sandry 41, Elizabeth 43, John 17, Louis 10, LEONARD 6, Theodore 3, Elizaeth 16, Barbara 14, Margaret 13, Emma 8, and Martha eleven months.

" Andrew Sandry came in 1849 or ‘50, and resided here until his death in the spring of 1913,"

In 1895 Alamakee County, Andreas is 65, with Elazabeth 67, both born in Germany. Elizabeth 41, Leonard 30, William 21, wer all born in Allamakee COunty.

"Andrew Theodore Sandry died April 30th, 1913. Deceased was born September 22, 1829, in Bevers Kanton, Grauburedten, Switzerland. He came to America April 27, 1849, arriving in New Orleans.
He married Elizabeth Hirth on April 12, 1852, in Dubuque, Iowa, and came to Lansing, settling on a farm where they resided ever since. Their union was blessed by ten children, five boys and five girls, two of whom preceded him in death. Anton Leonhard died January, 1897, and Ludwig Fridolin died December 29, 1912. He is survived by his wife, five daughters;-Elizabeth at home; Mrs. H. Martin, Waukon; Mrs. H.F. Hartfeil, Minneapolis; Mrs. E.F. Klein and Mrs. U.G. White, Chicago; three sons, John P., Dubuque; Theodore B., at home; Wm. C., Minneapolis; and eight grandchildren, Martha Margretta Martin, Clarence Raymon Sandry, Juan Willard and Henry Wayne Martin, Hermina Elsa Hartfeil, Evalyn Leonhardtena and Ernst Sandry Klein,and Katharine Geraldine Sandry.
Mr. Sandry, like all true descendants of Wm. Tell, has been a lifelong democrat, and a man who has always taken great pride in national, state, county and town matters and never missed an opportunity of aiding in the material development and growth of either. He served this county in the state legislature in 1872 and in the adjourned session of the Fourteenth General Assembly in 1873, was his party's candidate for county treasurer in 1879, was a member of the Board of Supervisors for three years, for twenty-five years President of the German Farmer's Insurance Company and was its Secretary and Treasurer for four years, besides holding various township offices, such as Trustee, Assessor, etc.
The funeral occurred Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m., Rev. Kegel officiating and burial in Mays Prairie cemetery. The pall bearers were John P., Wm.C., Clarence Sandry, U.G. White, E.F. Klein and H. Martin.
All of the children with their wives and husbands were present with the exception of Theodore, who is in the sanitarium at Prairie du Chien, and H. Hartfeil, who is at the sanitarium at Shakopee and Wayne Martin, circumstances not permitting him to be present. Mr. Bernhardt Hirth, a brother of Mrs. Sandry was also present.

"Elizabeth Hirth was born in Hockenheim, Baden, Germany, Dec. 23, 1827, She died at 3 o'clock p. m. Sunday, June 13, at Robinsdale, Minn., where she resided the past year or more since selling the old home in this township.
She came to America when a girl and was married to Andrew Theo. Sandry, April 12, 1852, by Rev. Francis Jaeger at Dubuque, Iowa. Ten children were the fruit of this union, the husband and three sons preceding the mother to the grave.
She is survived by two sons and five daughters, namely; John A., of Dubuque, Iowa; Will of Minneapolis; Barbara, Mrs. Henry Martin, of Waukon; Margaret, Mrs. H. Hartfeil, Minneapolis; Martha, Mrs. U. G. White, Chicago; Emma, Mrs. Klein, Chicago; Miss Bertha, of Robbinsdale, Minn., also one brother, Barney Hirth of Minneapolis; besides eight grandchildren. The remains were brought to Waukon yesterday and the funeral takes place this afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Congregational church at Church, Rev.A. Kegel of this city officiating. Thus is another pioneer mother laid to rest, after a useful, well spent life, leaving after a memory that will ever be cherished by her children."
