" HARRY M. WERTZ, who died in this city Wednesday last, will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends who knew of his good qualities. He was a native of Pennsylvania, and had lived in Fairfield 28 years. At the time of his death he was 49 years of age. He leaves a widow and four sons, three more boys. The funeral occurred Thursday. "

Emeline B. Brandt, 87, widow of Michial Brandt and a resident of Lincoln since 1887, died at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at her home, 1106 North Twenty-seventh street. She had lived at that address continuously for forty-one years. She was born in Bladenburg. O. May 2, 1842 and later moved to Fairfield, Iowa. Leaving Fairfield in 1887 she moved to Lincoln. She is survived by three sons, William Baltzell and Alonzo Baltzell, both of Lincoln and Edmund Baltzell of Portland. Ore.; three daughters, Mrs. H. S. Wertz, of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Ira Baldwin of Chicago and Mrs. George Palmer of Lincoln. The body is at Alba Brown’s pending funeral arrangements.

She was married to Atkison C. Baltzell, July 11, 1860 near Gambler, O. After living in Ohio for about three years they moved to Fairfield, Iowa.
Here most of their family was born and reared. They lived at Fairfield for twenty-three years. In October 1887 they moved with their family to Lincoln. She first united with Grace Methodist church. A few years later she helped in organizing a church class which grew in number and is now known as Epworth Methodist church. Some time after this she, with eight or formed the first Free bout thirty years relinquishing her church duties only because of fatllng health. Her husband, Atkison C. Baltzell, passed away June 6, 1914. She was married to Michael Lo Brandt June 4, 1918 who passed away May 21, 1929. Mrs. Brandt leaves to mourn her loss, three daughters, Mrs Fannie Wertz, of Long Beach. Calif.. Mrs. Ina Baldwin of Chicago and Mrs. Myrtle Palmer of Lincoln: three sons. William and Alonzo Baltzell of Lincoln and Edmund Baltzell of Portland. Ore. She also leaves ten grand sons, three granddaughters and eleven great grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife and mother, most generous and self- sacrificing, and her sincere Christian influence will live forever in the hearts of her loved ones and many friends. In June 1901 Harry Wertz was the equestrian director for Gollmar Bros. & Schuman''s Triple Circus and Menagerie.
"Gollmar Bros. Circus out of Baraboo, Wisc. Starting as a wagon show in the 90's and in 1903 going on rails and continuing until the fall of 1916 when it was sold to James Patterson. I first saw the show in Racine, Wisc., early in May 1904. I saw the show again in 1911, I was showing at Fairs in the late Summer and Fall through the Central West, that year, and showed at the Benton County Fair, in Vinton, Iowa. Sept 5 - 9th. "

1908 Billboard Magazine " Harry F. Wertz, assistant equestrian director of the Gollmar Brothers' Shows, spent the winter months on his ranch near Burlington, Colorado. His is now at the Gollmar winter quarters, Baraboo, Wis. "

The death of Minna Baltzell Ross occurred at Portland, Ore., last Thursday night. She was born at Fairfield, Iowa August 20, 1877, and had lived the greater part of her life in Lincoln, having been educated here, and graduating from the Lincoln high school with the class of '98. She spent several years afterwards in Chicago, until last December, when her health began to fall and she went west, hoping to recuperate and regain her health. The last two months her sister, Mrs. Fannie Wertz, has been with her in Portland, trying to do all she could to alleviate her in her suffering. The body will be sent to Lincoln for interment at Wyuka cemetery. She leaves a mother, Mrs. E. Baltzell; three sisters; Mrs. Fannie Wertz and Mrs. Myrtle Palmer of this city, and Mrs. Ina Baldwin of Chicago; also three brothers, William A. Baltzell and Alonzo Baltzell of Lincoln, and Edwin Baltzell of Ashton, Iowa. The remains will probably reach Lincoln Monday evening and funeral arrangements will be announced later.

The sixth annual reunion of the Wertz family assoeiation, the ancestors of which date back to the year 1705 in America and 200 years further In Europe will be held in Lincoln Thursday, Friday. Saturday and Surday of this week The convention will bring from 200 to 300 members of the family from all over the United States. There are over 1,000 active members in the association.
W. W. Wertz, of Lincoln, is chairman of the board of directors of the organization, and Henry Kauffman of Fairfield, Nebraska is a member of the board. Estelle Ryan Snyder, of Chicago, is president. The family genealogical tree, in the possession of W W. Werts, contains 10,000 names and 9,000 dates.

There are about a dozen members of the family in Lincoln, of which the following are acting as the entertainment committee for the convention: W. W. Wertz, Mrs. Annie S. Wertz, Mrs Fannie N. Wertz, Mrs. Isabel Wertz, Mrs Maude S. Walker, Mrs. Lulu Robinson, W. O. Timmerman, Edwin E. Hammond, J. W. Wertz and B. F. Wertz. Mayor Bryan will address the convention at the Lincoln hotel Thursday evening and Governor Morehead Friday morning. The Wertz Auto company will be host at an automobile tour Friday afternoon, and a musicale and entertainment will be given in the evening by John T. Prince and Miss Vera Upton. There will be an Orpheum theatre party Saturday afternoon and a banquet in the evening. The visitors will attend the Plymouth Congregational church in a body Sunday.

In 1917 Billboard magazine reported that Harry F. Wertz was the equestrian director for James Patterson & Gollmar Brothers show, spending the spring in Oklahoma.

1920 Billboard "Harry Wertz, well known in circusdom, will take out a dramatic show under canvas. Bert Chipman will be the man ahead. "

In 1925 Lincoln, Harry F. (Fannie) is a salesman, living at 2727 Q. Harold L, same address, is a clerk for Barklow Bros Co.

January 1930 "Emeline Baltzell Brandt, who died January 8, left an estate of $800, according to the petition filed by a daughter, Myrtle C. Palmer. Her will leaves $50 to the Free Methodist church; $100 to a son, Edmond A. Baltzell, Portland, Ore.; and the remainder will be divided among her other children: William A. Baltzell, Lincoln; Alonzo L. Baltzell, Lincoln; Frances N. Wertz, Long Beach, Cal.; Ina F. Baldwin, Chicago; and Myrtle C. Palmer."

Harry - a theatrical showman, Fannie, and Harold - an oil bookkeeper- are in Long Beach California in 1930,
July 1938 "Mr. and Mrs. William A. Baltzell attended a reunion of the Baltzell family, former Lincoln residents, held at Long Beach, Calif., at which all members were present except a brother, Alonzo L. of Lincoln. This was the first time in 21 years the family had gathered. Attending the affair at the home of Mrs. Frances Wertz were also Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Baltzell of Oakland, Calif., Mrs. Ina Baldwin of San Francisco, and Mrs. Myrtle Palmer of Long Beach. Mrs. Wertz and Mrs. Palmer are sisters of the Baltzell brothers."

1938 "The marriage of Mrs. Myrtle B. Palmer, formerly of Lincoln, and Jess B. Crew, formerly of Muskogee and Talilequah, Okla., took place at an informal ceremony at St. Luke’s Episcopal church in Long Beach, Cal., Wednesday, December 14, at 3 o’clock. Preceding the ceremony, the organist played a group of selections, including 'Oh Morn of Beauty,' 'At Dawning,' and 'Oh Promise Me.' As the bridal party entered, the organist accompanied with the Lohengrin music. Mrs. Harry F. Wertz, sister of Mrs. Crew, was her matron of honor. She wore stone blue with a matching hat and carried roses. Mr. Wertz served as the best man."
(Mrs. Palmer is the widow of the late George H. Palmer. Geroge Henry Palmer 1862-1936 is buried in Lincoln, # 69188220. )

Myrtle B. Crew, born in Iowa March 23, 1880, mother Logston, father Baltzell, diied December 8, 1947 in Los Angeles County.
"Mrs. Myrtle B. Crew, former Lincoln, Neb., resident, died here Dec. 8. She moved here from Lincoln approximately ten years ago. Surviving is a brother, A. L. Baltzell, Lincoln. Burial will be In Long Beach."



Jesse Batty Crew, Sr., 1872-1943 is buried in Tahlequah, # 51531755.

Former Tahlequah mayor and business man Robert Reynolds Crew, 82, died Monday April 22, at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa.
Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Chruch with Rev. Jimmie Thames officiating. Burial was in the Tahlequah City Cem. under the direction of Reed Culver Funeral Home. Crew was born Oct 15, 1902 to Jesse and Hattie Reynolds Crew in Tahlequah, Indian Territory. He attended Old Baptist Mission and Sequoyah Grade School and graduated from Shattuck Military School in Fairbolt, Minn. He then attended the University of Okla. receiving his degree in pharmacy.
Whiel attending OU, he met and married Maynee L. McNabb who died in 1981. Upon graduation he worked in his family drug stores in Broken Arrow and Muskogee from 1923-1929, before returning to Tahlequah.
As a young boy, he worked as a "Soda jerk" in his fathers drug store. Crew Bros. Drug which was the first drug store in the state to install a carbonic soda fountain. He and his brother, the late Jesse B. Crew Jr. bought the business from their father in 1938 and continued together in apartnership until Jesse was killed in an automobile accident in 1947. Crew, who had spent 36 years in the drug business, sold the drug store in 1959 because of health reasons.

Harry and Fannie are alone in 1940 Long Beach. In 1941 they're at 24 Bonito Avenue. Harold L. (Corrine) is a typist LBWD, living at 369 Bay Shore.

January 22, 1944 " Friends in Lincoln have received word of the death of Mrs. Francis Wertz in Long Beach, Cal, Jan 13. She moved from Lincoln about 15 years ago. Surviving are her husband, Harry Wertz; one son, Harold, of Long Beach; three brothers, William A. and A. L. Baltzell, both of Lincoln, and Ed Baltzell of Oakland, Cal.; two sisters. Mrs. Myrtle Palmer Kruse, Long Beach, and Mrs. Ina Baldwin of San Francisco. Funeral services were held Long Beach Jan. 17.:

The Long Beach 1945 directory has Harry F. Wertz at 369 1/2 Bay Shore Avenue, and at the same address is Harold L. (Corrine) asst. exec. L.B. Council of Defense.

C.A. Wertz, age 25, son of Harry F. Wertz and Fannie "Battzell", married Bertha M. Pierce in Pottawattamie County Iowa March 25, 1909. Her parents wee robert F. Browning and Arella Tewney.


1909 Lincoln "Mrs. Clarence Wertz and son of Omaha are visiting Miss S. S. Wertz of 2727 Q street."

In 1910 Omaha, C. A. is 25, a commercial man, with Bertha 27, both born in Iowa. Russell 6 was born in Nebraska. Father-in-law R.S. Browning, 65 born in Pennsylvania is with them.
In 1913 Clarence Wertz was performing a "hurdle mule" act for the Robson Brothers show, opening at Reading Pennsylvania April 17.
1919 "Owing to the prevalence of the foot and mouth disease and to prevent possible complication, the Sparks Show left its camels in winter quarters. The McLains, aerialists, are the only newcomers to the Sparks show this season. They were with Gollmar Bros. last year. "
