In 1880 Washington County, Iowa Richard F. Shelley is 51, Harriet 49, Virgil 24, Homer 22, Jessie E. 20, ichard 18, Caie 14, A.C. 14, and Fank 12.

Virgil Elmer Shelley is in Audubon County, Iowas in 1885, Cameron township, single.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, Virgil is single, farming alone, 54 born in Indiana, father born in Indiana, mother in Wisconsin.

In 1911 Carrie Shelley transfered the southwest of 32, 8S 43W to Tunnis V. Bashart.

He didn't go back to his brother-in-law's funeral in July 1911 Corning, Iowa

"Henry Davis Bovaird was born Philadelphia, Penn., September 19, 1857, and died at his home in Mercer township, Adams county, Iowa, June 30, 1911, aged 53 years, 9 months and 11 days. His untimely death was the result of a fall from a ladder at his home June 27th.
When he was yet a small boy he came to Jasper county, Iowa, with his parents where he grew to manhood, and later moved to Boone county, Iowa. He was married at Marengo, Iowa, in 1885 to Miss Jessie Shelley, of Marengo. They made their home in Audubon county until 1902, when they purchased the present home in Mercer township and moved upon it. Three children blessed this union, Mrs. Elsie Schafroth, Mrs. Olive Riley and Claude, who with their mother mourn his sudden demise.
He was a kind and affectionate husband, a loving father, a member of the M. E. church, a loyal citizen and a true neighbor and friend, respected by all who knew him. He will be truly missed but not forgotten.
Those in attendance at the funeral from abroad were five sisters and an only brother, as follows: Mrs. F. P. Reese, Warm, Okla.; Mrs. L. W. Lewis, Perry, Iowa; Mrs. D. E. Ellis, Rippey, Iowa; Misses Belle and Sadie Bovaird, Ogden, Robert Bovaird, Esterville, Iowa. One sister, Mrs. Maggie Blake, of Herman, Minn., was absent.
Other relatives present were: H. B. Shelley, Staurt, Iowa; Mrs. Ada Coomes and daughter, Fredis, Glidden, Iowa; Miss Carrie Shelley, Marengo, Iowa; Frank Shelley, Marengo, Iowa, and F. P. Rees, Wann, Okla.
Harry, as he was familiarly known, was a favorite in the family, and so many of the loved ones being present to pay their last tribute of love and affection and to sympathize and comfort the bereaved family in this dark hour is a lasting tribute to his memory. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in. Corning, Iowa, on Sunday, July 2, 1911, the sermon being preached by his pastor, Rev. Elliott Voorhees, of Prescott, assisted by Rev. J. Kirkendall, of Corning."
Virgil proved up a quarter in 28, 7S 43W in 1912.

Virgil was in Burlington in 1918, when his father died.

Iowa, March 14, 1918. "CALLED BEYOND. Richard T. Shelley, revered Marengo Civil War veteran, died Saturday, March ninth, 1918, at his home in this city at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 9 days. Services, conducted by Rev. R. L. Patterson, were held in the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, The G.A.R. and W.R.C.. attending in a body, in company with a large gathering of friends and relatives.

Richard T. Shelley was born in Henry County, Indiana on September 28, 1828. On St. Patrick's day, 1853, he was united in marriage to Harriet Butterfield, removing to Iowa in the spring of 1856 and to Iowa County in 1857. He lived in this vicinity from that date until his death.

R. T. Shelley enlisted in the Union army August 28, 1862, mustered Aug. 28, 1862, promoted fourth corporal March 11, 1864, taken prisoner October 19, 1864, at Cedar Creek, Va., promoted third corporal December 16, 1864, mustered ort July 17, 1865, at Savanah, Ga. The regiment rendezvoused at Muscatine, Iowa, left Muscatine October 18, 1862 for Helena, Ark., and landed there October 28. Mr. Shelley saw service in the Vicksburg campaign, Champion Hill, Port Hudson, the battle of Cedar Creek, and many other battles of the Civil War, besides suffering capture and imprisonment in a southern prison.

In 1901, on account of advancing years, Mr. Shelley sold his farm and removed to Marengo, where the evening of life was spent on well earned retirement. Here his beloved companion died April, 1905. He, with his wife, united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1874 and for all the subsequent years continued steady and loyal in their allegiance to Christ till their crowning time.

Four children survive, two, Homer and Richard having passed on some years ago. Those living are: Horace B., Guthrie Center, Virgil E. Burlington, Co., Frank U., Marengo, Mrs. Jessie Bovaird, Corning, Iowa, Mrs. Addie Coomes, Glidden, Iowa; and Miss Carrie, who has kept house for her father, also 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren are also left."

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Virgil E. is farming, 64, and his sister Caroline 53, born in Iowa, is with him.

In 1930 Fremont County, Colorado, Virgil is a fruit grower, 74, with Caroline 63.

February 4, 1937 Williamsburg, Iowa " Brother of Frank Shelley, Marengo-Williamstourg star route mail carrier.

Virgil E. Shelley of Canyon City, Colorado, died Jan. 21 and was brought to Marengo for burial in the I. 0. 0. F. cemetery last Monday. Born in Indiana 76 years ago, he was reared on a farm north of Marengo, later living in Nebraska and Colorado.
Other survivors include another brother, Horace of Guthrie Center, and three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Bovaird of Lenox, Mrs. Adda Coomes of Lanesboro, and Carrie of Canyon City. Miss Shelley with Mrs. Coomes and her husband cared for him during the last three months.
He had been in failing health for several years."

Virgil - 1855-1937 - is buried in Marengo, Iowa # 41055297. His
June 15, 1937 Carroll, Iowa "Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson Shelley from near Stuart, visited Sunday at the home of the former's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Coomes. They were accompanied home by their aunt, Miss Carrie Shelley, who will stay a few weeks visiting with relatives."

Carrie is in Taylor County, Iowa in 1940 (she was in Fremont County Colorado in 1935) 73, lodging with widowed Jessie Boraid 80, also widowed.

Carrie E. Shelley 1866-1946 is buried in Marengo, # 41055400.
