Wednesday, August 14, 1940 page 1:3 Shirley Fay Hill, 2 year-old-daughter of Mrs. Ellen Eunice Hill, who lives on a farm 30 miles east and six miles south of Colorado Springs, in the Drennan district, was found drawned at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in a livestock tank, Dr. Lawrence O. Taney, El Paso County coroner, reported. The child wandered out of the farmhouse and was not missed for about 10 minutes. Her mother then began looking for her, but a search of the yard failed to reveal the child. As the search continued, a sister of the missing infant, Barbara Ellen Hill, 10 years old, called to her mother that the missing child was in the tank, situated about 30 feet from the house. The mother ran to the tank and found the missing child floating in about 18 inches of water. A physician was called and an emergency appeal sent to the Colorado Springs fire department. The department sped to the scene and an inhalator was used in efforts to resuscitate the child, but the efforts were unavailing. It was not known how many minutes the infant had been in the water. Dr. Haney, who said no inquest will be held, reported that the child had been trying to sail a toy boat in the tank and evidently had leaned too far over the rim, so that she toppled head-foremost into the water. Dr. Haney, who arrived soon after the fire department resuce squad reach the scene, said that rigor mortis had set in when he reached the scene and that it was obvious that efforts to resuscitate the child were doomed to failure. The little girl, he said, had been playing in the yard with several other youngsters, which accounted for the mother's failure to miss her for the few minutes that she was missing from the group. --------------------- Shirley is buried in Colorado Springs # 15825436. |
