New York Birth Records, Orleans Co: ESGOTT, Alfaretta, born 30 April 1849, Carlton; daughter of Erastus ESGOTT and Roxanna NEWTON.
1850 CENSUS, Carlton, Orleans Co, NY: "Jane", 1 year old. Living with parents and grandmother.
1856 CENSUS, Franklin, Linn, IA: "Alfareta J. E.", 7 years, born NY. Alfareta is living with her parents.
1860 CENSUS, Fayette Twp, Linn Co, IA: "Alfretta J.", 11 years, born NY. Living with parents and Mary Croly.
1870 CENSUS, Canton Twp, Benton Co, IA: "Annie", 21 years, born NY, at home. Living with parents and 3 siblings.
Lewis Hulett in 1870 Whiteside County, Illinois, born about 1843 in Indiana, with Spencer and Rebecca, both 39. Charles is 9, Frank is 6.

Nehemiah Spencer Hulett born 1821 in Vermont, married Rebecca Penrod, and died July 1893 in Calhoun County, Iowa, with children Lewis D., Joseph S., Maria I., Melinda H., Horace S., Eliza E., Charles F., MNary J., and Frank.
Rebecca (Penrod) Hulett, per # 23793544, is buried in Calhoun County, Iowa 1821-1893. "Killed in the Pomeroy tornado of 1893."
Nehemiah Spencer Hulett 1821-1893 is also buried in Calhoun County, # 23793535.
"Last Thursday evening before dark a tornado demolished the town of Pomeroy, Calhoun county, on the line of the Illinois Central road, killing fifty-three people and maiming 109 who are now under medical attendance. The residence portion of the place was completely wiped from the face of the earth and the entire plat resembles a district over which a flood had passed, leaving flood wood and splintered boards strewn everywhere."




L.D. Hulett married Alferrette J. Eogot in Shellsburg, Benton County, Iowa February 9, 1879.

In 1880 Tama County, Iowa, Louis is a harness maker, 36, with Alfaretta J. 31.

In 1885 Platte County, Nebraska Louis is a harness maker, 42, married but no spouse.
Lewis was appointed postmaster at Lansing, Colorado, Sept 17, 1886, succeeded by Mattie J. Jester Sept 28, 1886.

Lewis timber-claimed a quarter in 26, 7S 42W in 1895.


Lewis D. and Alfaretta E. are in Pottawattamie County, Iowa in 1900. He's still a harness maker born December 1849 in Indiana.
Louis and Alfaretta are in Pottawattamie County in 1910, still a harness maker. Sister-in-law Lola A. Richardson, widowed, 47, born in Iowa is a traveler for a charitable organizations.

Alfaretta, per one tree, died Sept 22, 1913 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Lewis D. Hulett died January 15, 1917 in Fall River County, South Dakota.
History of Tama County, Iowa, Chapter 13: "L. D. HULETT, a harness - maker of Dysart, is a native of Indiana. He was born in Blackford County, that State, December 14, 1843. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Whiteside County, Illinois, and there the subject of this sketch passed his youth and received his education. In 1863, he enlisted as a privte in Company B, One Hundred Forty-Seventh Illinois Infantry and served until honorably discharged at Savannah, Georgia in 1865. Mr. HULETT then returned to his native county and afterwards learned the harness makers trade in the town of Morrison. Subsequently, he followed that trade in different western states until 1871, at which time he located at Fort Dodge, Iowa where he worked his trade for two years, then went to Blairstown, remaining there three years. In 1876 he came to Dysart and opened a harness shop, which is now well stocked with goods in that line. Mr. HULETT is a member of A. O. U. W. society, aand was instrumental in organizing the I.O.O. F. in this place. He was married to Miss A. J. ESGET, on the 9th day of February, 1879."

From Ancestry.com: Alfaretta's sister, Lois, had been living with her and Lewis as her husband and daughter had died and she was alone. She stayed in South Dakota with Lewis when he was at the Soldiers' Home. Since Lewis and Alfaretta had no children and Lois did not either, Lewis passed the Colorado Farm on to his brother-in-law, Calvin ESGET (His wife's brother). Upon Calvin's death the farm went to his only child, a daughteer, Elizbeth Esget MARKS. Upon Elizabeth's death, the farm was willed to her youngest son, Richard MARKS, Corwith, Iowa, where the property remains still in the family. [RenchD, April 2013]

Alfaretta's father Derostus Esget, born January 1824 in New York, is living with his daughter Lola E. Richardson in Linn County Iowa in 1900.
