One tree said Arthur's brother was Monmouth Brodrick - 1842-1922, buried in Clay County # 54101387.
In the debate over a Nebraska state tree Carl A. Brodrick, Fairfield, Monmouth's son wrote: "Perhaps I can add a little ammunition for your fight for the cottonwood." He told how his father was planting corn in May, 1873, when he saw a prairie fire approaching a mile or two to the northwest. In the field stood a young cottonwood tree, to which he tied one horse and then straddled the other and rode swiftly to help the neighbors fight the fire. They were successful in extinguishing the fire and father returned to find his horse still safely tied to the cottonwood," He wrote. "This cottonwood tree was spared and grew to be about 35 feet in height and spread. Many times he rested my team under the welcome shade. It finally succumbed to age at three score years. Father was known as the 'Lone Tree' man from Clay County in the legislature of 1899-1900."
