Asa M. and Alice (Wescoat) Harmon , 6 South 50 West
Bernice P. McBlair was born in a sod house in Eastern Colorado on March 3, 1913, to Asa Madison Harmon and Alice Matilda Wescoat Harmon. Her family owned a wheat farm that was homesteaded by her parents near Seibert, Colorado. Bernice attended school, eventually graduating from the Schoal Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado. She taught in three one-room schools near Seibert: Harmony, Vanderkoy, and Pleasant Valley. Bernice also worked as a Head Baker at Johnson's Corner. Bernice lived on the homestead until she was married to Howard McBlair in December of 1936. They moved to Loveland in 1948. They had a wonderful life together until he passed away in 1967. The McBlair family always lived on a cattle ranch and enjoyed every season, especially the baby calves which arrived in the spring. The family would then have their branding day where neighbors and family would gather for a busy day and good food... "Then we took the heard of cows and calves to summer pasture, the spring cattle drive. Then we began farming and raising alfalfa and corn for feed for our cattle. We all helped to irrigate, harvest and stack hay. We had wonderful times celebrating the holidays with our family and friends. Mom and Dad many times hosted our Buckhorn church picnic on our ranch." Bernice and Burnham Nash did a lot of traveling in the Western states such as Oregon, Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. They enjoyed traveling with Chuck's folks, Kenneth and Dorotha Ogg. Bernice always loved growing beautiful flowers indoors and out. She enjoyed riding horses, feeding and raising cattle, chickens, and pigs on the ranch. She also loved to sew and cook. On November 19, 2010, Bernice went to Heaven at her home ranch where she lived for the last eight years with her daughter and son- in- law in Masonville, Colorado, in the presence of her family. Bernice had two children, Sylvia Chuck Clausen, and Robert JoAnn McBlair, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Bernice enjoyed a very special gentleman friend for 43 years, Burnham Nash of Masonville, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard Jason McBlair, two brothers, Clyde and Archie Harmon, and one grand daughter, Amy Jessica McBlair. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at the Buckhorn Presbyterian Church, 8762 N. County Rd. #27, Loveland, Colorado. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. |
