Joseph and Minnie (Frickey) Wagenblast, 6 South 49 West
In 1880 Madison County, Illinois, Joseph "Wagonblast" is 13,
adopted child of Frederick Hess 29 and Catherine 27.
In 1880 Smith County, Kansas, Henry Frickey is 55, Annie 34, Mary 14, Henry 11, August 9, John 6, Annie 4, Charles 2, and Emma three months.
When Anna Mae (Schaffer) Frickey died in 1932, her obituary said her first husband Henry died in 1891 and married Thomas H. Kessler, of Norton, Kansas; eight children: Henry Frickey, Mollalah, Ore., Gus Frickey, Denver, Colo.; John Frickey, Oberlin, Kansas; Charles Frickey, Oberlin, Kansas; Mollie Bennett, Athol, Kansas; Anna Panter, Smith Center, Kansas; Jane Ellis, Sterling, Colo.; Laura Rohan, Nampha, Idaho; fifty-eight grand children, eight of which have preceded her in death; thirty-seven great grand-children and two great great grand-children.
In 1895 Smith County, Jos Wagonblast and Minnie are both 28, with Mabel seven months old.
In 1900 Decatur County, Kansas, Jos Wagenblast is farming, born January 1867 in Illinois,
married 18 years to Minnie March 1867 in Illinois. Minnie has had five kids, three living.
Mable Sept 1894, Elmer May 1896, and son Ola Nov 1899 were all born in Kansas.
In 1905 Decatur County, J. and M. Wagonblast are both 38, Mable 10, E,. 8, O.6, E. 4 and L. 1.
Joseph Wagonblast is mentioned as a new homesteader in the Burlington Colorado newspaper of March 1907.
In 1910 Smith County, Kansas, Minnie is widowed, 42, with Elmer 13, Zola 11, Earl 9, and Louis 6. They're living with Mabel 15 njust married to Clark Tuxhorn 38, all farming.
Minnie, widow of Joseph, claimed a quarter in 8, 6S 49W in 1915.
In 1915 Smith County, Kansas, Minnie is 47, Earl 14, Laurie 11, and Anna Fricker is 72.
Louis 1904-1919 is buried in Smith County # 146552137.
Minnie is buried in Smith County # 146227154.
"Minnie Mary Frickey was born in Carlinville, Illinois, March 31, 1866 and departed this life April 29, 1932, at her home in Athol, Kansas, aged 66 years and 27 days. Being ill only a few hours.
She with her parents at the age of seven, moved to Kansas in 1873, and her father homesteaded four miles north of Athol. She spent her girlhood days in the vicinity of Athol.
In 1889 she married Joseph Wagenblast and to this union six children were born. One son dying in infancy,
another son, Louie passed away February 8, 1919. Four children survive: Mabel McQuary of Richland, Mo.;
Elmer, Ola and Earl of Athol.
Her first husband died at Cope, Colo., where they had taken a homestead. soon after Mr. Wagenblast's death, she with the children came back to Athol, where she has resided since.
On September 8, 1915, she was married to Roland M. Bennett, who although quite aged and afflicted, still survives her. Also her step-children, Margaret Hawkins, of Franklin, Nebr.; Mrs. Livia Post, of Smith Center, Kans.; J. F. Bennett of Norton, Kansas; three step-sons of Alma, Nebr., Roll, Charles, and William; a step-father, Thomas Kessler of Norton, Kansas; also four brothers and three sisters, Henry of Oregon, August of Denver, Colo., Charles and John of Oberlin; Laura Rohan of Nampha, Idaho; Jane Ellis, of Sterling, Colorado; and Anna Panter of Smith Center, Kansas. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death several years ago.
Mrs. Bennett became a member of the United Brethern Church in Athol, January 30, 1921 and lived a consistent Christian life until the Master's call. She was a very faithful and devoted wife and mother. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her best.
Besides the immediate relatives including five grandchildren, she leaves many friends who will mourn her passing.
MABEL
In 1920 Smith County, Mabel is widowed, 25, with Henry 11 and Louis 9.
In 1930 Camden County, Missouri, Mable is 34, married to Clarence McGary 49 born in Missouri. They have his son Cloyd 20 bonr in Missouri, and Mabel's son Louis 19 is with them.
Clarence Edward McQuary, born May 16, 1878 in Atlanta, Missouri,
died in Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas February 2, 1957
He's buried there, # 10575233.
Mabel M. Wagenblast, age 80, married Will E. Weeks, 83 in Wheeler County July 22, 1975.
OLA
Ola Owen Wagenblast registered for WWI in Smith County, Kansas, born October 23, 1898, nearest relative Minnie Bennett, mother.
He's a farm laborer in 1940 Smith County, working for the widow Pearl Hudson.
Ola died May 22, 1964 in Smith County, buried there # 146552014.
" Ola Wagenblast, popular Athol citizen, died unexpectedly at his home in Athol, last Friday, May 22.
His funeral was held from Simmons chapel on Monday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m.
The Rev. R. T. Wentling officiated, Ruth Larson and Betty Smith were singers, accompanied by Mildred Robertson.
Loyal Hudson, Gene Hudson, Fred Panter, Harold Wagenblast, Gerald Wagenblast and Eugene Conaway were pallbearers. interment was in Pleasant View cemetery.
Ola Ralph Wagenblast, the third child of Joe and Minnie Wagenblast, was born in Smith County, Kansas on November 30, 1898 and passed away suddenly at his home in Athol at noon on Friday, May 22, 1964, at the age of 65 years, 5 months and 22 days.
He moved with his family to Decatur county when very young and later spent a short time in eastern Colorado.
His father died when he was quite young and left the young children to help support their mother.
They returned to Smith county in 1908. Ola made his home with various families and attended various public schools. He did seasonal work when not in school.
He was married to Pearl Hudson on November 25, 1940 and helped make a home for her minor children.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother and one brother.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, of the home; two brothers, Elmer of Smith Center, and Earl of Brighton, Colorado; a sister, Mabel Ferris of Houston, Texas; a number of step children and their families, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
ELMER
In 1920 Smith County, Elmer and Mary, both 23, have newborn Harold.
In 1930 Smith County, Elmer is 33, married to Mary 34, with Harold 10, Howard 7, and gerald 6, all five born in Kansas.
In 1940 Elmer 43 and Mary 44 have Harold 20, Howard 18, Gerald 16, and Detta 8.
Harold Elmer Wagenblast, 68, Athol, died Tuesday, May 19, 1987,
Kirwin Lake. Mr. Wagenblast was born April 23, 1919, in Smith County. He was manager of the Athol CO-OP Elevator.
He was a member of the NCHA Picnic Ante, Good Sam Club and United Church of Christ, Athol.
Survivors include his wife, Alma of the home; three sons, John and Curtis, both of Athol, and Kendall of Undsborg;
a brother, Howard of Salina; a sister, Detta Panter of Athol; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Simmons Mortuary, Smith Center, the Rev. Dale McCain officiating. Burial will be in the Myers Cemetery, Athol.
Gerald Wayne Wagenblast 1923-1986 is buried in Athol "Love of the outdoors played a big part in the life of Gerald Wagenblast. From the days as a young boy growing up along the creek until his untimely death, the wild creatures held a fascination for him.
The love of the outdoors brought Gerald and his companions much satisfaction - first was his participation in owning and racing hot-rod cars for several years, in which many trophies were won; then in hunting and fishing.
Many years he owned coyote hounds and he enjoyed hunting with them. Although he no longer owned dogs, he accompanied the other men in their hunting.
He and his wife Ilene, spent several weeks each year in Colorado, relazing in the great outdoors as they camped and fished together.
Gerald's philosophy of living one day at a time brought him much enjoyment and fulfillment. He had a knowledgeable and witty remark for everyone. His participation added much to any endeavor he undertook, which included bing a board member of the school district, of Lane Township, of Athol United Church of Christ, and the Athol Co-op, and the morning "coffee cup" group.
Gerald loved his grandchildren. Last fall, with a granddaughter becoming active in junior high sports, Gerald and Ilene began attending school sports events to watch her participate.
Gerald Wayne, third child of Elmer and Mary (Conaway) Wagenblast was born on Oct. 11, 1923. He lived his entire life at 62 1/2 years in the Athol area. His death came as the result of a tractor accident on March 25, 1986.
"Jumbo," as he was nick-named during his school years, finished his elementary schooling at the Hopkins school. He attended Athol Rural High School, graduating with the class of 1941.
After graduation, and with our country engaged in a war, Gerald was turned down for military duty so he turned to the farm for his livelihood. On Sept. 10, 1944, he married Ilene Smith. As they continued to farm they also milked a large herd of Holsteins and sold milk.
To this marriage five children were born: Janis, Gary, Jim, Joe and Connie. He was a member of Athol United Church of Christ.
Gerald will be greatly missed by his wife Ilene; his sons Gary and wife Deb, Jim and wife Tonja, Joe and wife Carol; his daughters Janis, Connie and husband Jeff LaFever; his grandchildren Stephanie, Mindi, Tara, Trina, Jarek, Angie and Holly Wagenblast; his sister Detta Panter and family; his brothers Harold and Howard and their families; his mother-in-law Neva Smith; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his father-in-law Ed Smith.
Funeral services were March 28 at Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, with Rev. Dale McCain officiating.
Galen Larson provided the music.
Pall vearers were Gerald's nephews, Lee Smith, Dail Smith, Stanley Smith, Kevin Smith, John Wagenblast, Curtis Wagenblast, and Dean Panter. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Athol."
Donald Reid Panter was born January 6, 1929 in rural Smith County, Kansas; the second child of Reid Osmond Panter and Frances Ethel (Kitchel) Panter. He died January 9, 2013 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS, three days after his 85th birthday.
Donald attended Pleasant View country school north of Athol and graduated from Athol High School in 1947.
On August 22, 1951, Donald enlisted in the Marine Corps, completing basic training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, CA. He married Detta Wagenblast on October 30, 1951 while he was home on boot leave. Donald often joked that Detta picked him up from the train and took him to her parents’ home where she had the preacher waiting and they got married. She had told Donald to be sure to have his blood test done and paperwork with him, but he had forgotten to do it, so they went next door to see Dr. Hardman and he did the test right then. They were married for over 62 years, and were blessed with 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
After their wedding, he went back to California to find a place to stay. Detta joined him later and they lived in San Diego with another Marine couple. When he left in the mornings, Detta would tell him “See you tonight” until the third day when she saw the loaded busses on the highway shipping out the troops. It was January 30th before Corporal Panter was shipped out for his overseas tour of duty in Korea, where he carried a flame thrower in the anti-tank assault unit. After an amphibious landing at Inchon, he served in at least 2 Theatre campaigns moving to the opposite coast. Upon returning from Korea, he was a drill instructor and started 2 platoons from March to August 1953.
After being discharged from the Marine Corps, Donald returned to Smith County where he started farming. After their first child, Dean was born, they moved north of Smith Center to a farmstead Detta’s parents owned. The family had an opportunity to move to a farmstead north of Athol when their second child, Susan was a baby. They later purchased that farm where they continued to make improvements and added an addition to the house the summer their third child, Sandra was born. It is still their home to this day. Donald’s farming career included raising wheat, feed (silage & oats) and corn, which was later replaced with milo. He also had cattle, a few dairy cows and hogs. Detta helped Donald with the farm, and when he was in the VA hospital with back problems, Detta and Dean loaded up the hogs to go to the sale barn – which ended the hog raising.
Donald’s hobbies included hunting, stock car racing, reading western books – particularly Louis L’Amour & Longarm, and watching John Wayne movies (McClintock was a family favorite). He especially enjoyed the annual family vacations at Chapman Campground in Colorado, where he taught his children and grandchildren how to fish. He also taught them how to shoot, and in recent years, it became a tradition to shoot blue rock targets over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas get-togethers.
Donald was an active member of the Mt. Suribachi Marine Corps League and V.F.W. in Smith Center and the American Legion in Kensington, where he served as the Sargent at Arms for many years and was also a long-time Bingo caller.
Donald was baptized when he joined the United Church of Christ, Athol, where he continued to be an active member. He also served as Lane Township Clerk.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-laws: Gerald Wagenblast, Keith Lentz, Harold Wagenblast, Howard Wagenblast and Gerald Rounsley.
He is survived by his wife, Detta of the home; son: Donald 'Dean' Panter and wife, Karen, Athol, KS; daughters: Susan Amrein-Johnson and husband, Don, Hays, KS and Sandra Gilligan and husband, Bryan, Garden City, KS; sister: Virginia Rounsley, Wichita, KS, Lelia Lentz, Derby, KS; grandchildren: Eric Panter, Manhattan, KS; Dena Hiller and husband, Zack, Athol, KS; Donielle Amrein, Kansas City, MO; Erin Amrein, Wichita, KS; April Johnson, Hays, KS and Rhiannon Gilligan, Garden City, KS; and Great-grandson, Caleb Hiller, Athol, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 13, 2014 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, with Pastor Tom James officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014 with the family present to greet friends from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Monday 8:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Athol, KS with military honors provided by the Marine Corps League - Mt. Suribachi Detachment, Smith Center. Memorials may be given to United Church of Christ, Athol and/or Marine Corps League - Mt. Suribachi Det. and/or American Legion of Kensington all in care of the funeral chapel.

Miles Herbert Clark "was born in the state of New York July 25, 1844, moving from there to Michigan with his parents when but four years old, where he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Rosa A. Bunnel, August 22, 1866. To this union nine children were born, eight of whom are still living to mourn his death. In 1878 he moved his family to Kansas where he resided until the death of his wife on August 22, 1910, after which he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Edwards of Kirwin, Kansas.
In the spring of 1912 he went to Oregon to visit a son, where he remained until his death on January 23 1913, being 68 years, 6 months and 2 days old. "

Rosa A. Bunnel was born at Oswego, New York, June 4, 1864. She with her parents moved to Michigan in the year 1864 where she was married to Herbert Clark on August 22, 1866, and to this union were born nine children, eight are still living and one, Tracy died when quite young. She united with the Methodist church in her youth and continued a faithful member until her death.
Bessie B. (Clark) Sperry 1879-1958 died in Nevada, and is buried in Mitchell, Nebraska, # 25655726.
Another sister Mable Caroline Kinion had lived in Oklahoma, and is buried in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska 1868-1952 # 79276248, with John B. Kinion 1869-1950.
A brother Miles Norman Clark 1883-1962 married Mary Eberline, daughter o Ferdinand and Nancy (Reynolds) Eberline
They moved to Yuma County, Colorado, and are buried there # 74474086.

who died in 1937 in Boise, Idaho. They had Norman G. Edwards in Kansas on August 30, 1904, who died in February 1981 in El Paso, Texas, widow Margaret Breeding. He was to be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas.
Ethel is in Topeka in 1930, age 60, and son Chester L. 23 and his wife Verl L. 26 are with her.
Ethel 1870-1937 is buried in Topeka # 118913734.
Mabel (Edwards) (Magnuson) Reynolds is also buried in Topeka # 120587211.

Everett F. Wagenblast, 54, who was employed as toll taker on the Lewis-Clark Bridge, at its opening in 1928,
but who had retired a number of years ago because of ill health, died Sunday at 10 p. m. at his home 625 Ridge St.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and attended the Evangelical £ Reformed Church here.
Mr. Wagenblast, a son of the late Melchior and Cinnie Wagen blast, was born in Piasa Township, Sept. 2, 1899.
A sister, Mrs. Emma Montague and a brother, John, also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sisters Mrs. Bertha Tucker, with whom he lived, and Mrs. James Coleman, and a brother,
Lester M, Alton. The Rev. Leonard Todd will officiate at the rites Wednesday at 1 p. m. in Morrow Quinn Mortuary, after which the body will be taken to the Evangelical Church in Brigh ton for a second rite at 2:30 (DST) by the Rev. A. L Schieler. Burial will be in the family lot in Brighton Cemetery.
