Chalmer and Nellie (Monroe) Shannon, 6 South 49 West



CHALMER'S FAMILY

In 1850 Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Eleanor J. Buck is 6, with parents John 39 and Margaret 28. Martha is 10, Thomas 9, and Benjamin 2.

Thomas Shannon enlisted in 1861 in the 51st Ohio Infantry, discharged 1964, injured in left arm, breast and right arm, discharged from Sawtelle in 1931.

They had Etta R. Shannon on December 4, 1878 in Guernsey County, Ohio.

In 1885 Wayne County, Iowa, Thomas R. Shannon is farming, 42, Eleanor J. 41, Bethiah M. 18, Lola J. 17, Martha E. 15, Thomas 13, Verelota M. 9, Etta R. 7, and Chalmer 3, all born in Ohio.

When Thomas was first admitted to Sawtelle in 1910 his nearest relatives were son Chalmer Shannon and daughter Margaret Knudson, both of Sterling, Colorado. Thomas was admitted to the Leavenworth, Kansas hospital in 1910, a laborer, residing at Topeka, Kansas. He only stayed two months at Leavenworth.

(Thomas is in Sawtelle in 1920, divorced. He's buried in Sterling, Colorado 1842-1935 # 58115702)


Eleanor Jane Shannon 1844-1920 is buried in Sterling # 55450223.
Lottie Kinkead 1875-1958 is buried in Sterling, with James Isaac Kinkead 1869-1949.

Bethiah Margaret (Shannon) Knudson 1867-1935 is buried in Sterling, # 57587113, with N. Peter Knudson 1866-1948.

Thomas B. Shannon and Eleanor A. Eckley's daughter Minnie Lou Shannon married Robert Greenlee Dunlap on April 2, 1896 in Ringgold COunty, Iowa.

NELLIE'S FAMILY

James Monroe of Barlow Ohio and Mary Hayden Wray of Virginia had Dunfcan Danile Monroe on October 12, 1873 in Durham, Marion County, Ohio. Duncan was living in Stuart, Florida on February 13, 1956.
(Duncan 1873-1975 is buried in Logan County # 41543458.)

James Monroe 1848-1933 is buried in Sterling # 56902184, with Mary 1849-1914 # 56902216.

In 1885 Weld County, Colorado, James Monroe is farming, 36, with Mary 35, Duncan 11, Nettie 10, harry 8, Archie 6, and Nellie 2.

In 1900 Logan County, Colorado, James Monroe is farming, born August 1849 in Ohio, Mary H. May 1849 in Virginia. Nellie I. Feb 1875 and James H. October 1876, Archie C. March 1879, and Nellie B. Oct 1882 wre born in Iowa, frank F. Otober 1888 in Colorado.

NELLIE AND CHALMER

Nellie Monroe married Wood Dixon on May 22, 1907 in Logan County.

In 1910 Logan County, Nellie is a school teacher, divorced, 29 born in Colorado.

21 Dec 1910 Columbus Journal (James B. Whitcomb and Chalmer Shannon, successors to Geo. Hagel, made application for a license for a billiard hall for the unexpired term.), "
In 1910 Sterling, Colorado, Chalmer is 26, a real estate dealer, with mother Ella J. Shannon, widowed, 65, both born in Ohio.
Next household is sister Lottie 33, and her husband James J. Kinkead, a teamster, 43 born in Nebraska.

Lottie M. Shannon and James T. Kinkead, both of Sterling, married there March 29, 1906.

1911 Columbus, Nebraska "Last Saturday L. E. Whitcomb purchased Chalmer Shannon's interest in the firm of Whitcomb & Shannon in the Hagel bowling alleys, and is now the sole owner of the place."


Chalmer and Nellie V. Monroe married in Denver January 23, 1911.

Chalmer claimed forty acres in 4, 6S 49W in 1917.
He registered for WWI with a Seibert, Colorado address, farming, with Nellie.

In 1920 he's in Boulder, Colorado, still a real estate agent, 37, born in Ohio, with wife Nellie 37 born in Colorado. They have Mary jane 7 born in Nebraska.

All three are in Tulare County, California in 1930, "Chal" still a real estate agent.

Chalmer registered for WWII living in Wilmington, California, born May 31, 1882 in Guernsey County, Ohio, a real estate and religion worker. Nellie V. was his reference.


Chalmer 1882-1953 # 72144170 "Son of Thomas R. Shannon and Eleanor J. Buck" is buried in Los Angeles County, with Nellie Verdelia (Monroe) Shannon 1882-1956.
The funeral home book has Nellie Verdella born October 27, 1882 in Weld County, Colorado, dying in Bakersfield. Her parents were James Monroe of Barlow, Ohio and Mary Wray of Boones Mill, Virginia.

The California death index has Nellie's mother's maiden name Johnson.

MARY JANE

In 1940 Kern County, California, Mary Jane is 28, married to William Switzler 45 (35?) born in Missouri. Theodore 4 and Richard 2 were born in California.

1948 Bakersfield "A progressive approach to the Sunday School lesson as a means of stimulating and sustaining pupil interest was imparted to 65 officers and teachers of the First Methodist Church, Sunday. The speaker was the Reverend James McGiffin, executive secretary of religious education of the California Methodist Council from San Francisco. William Switzler, superintendent of the Sunday School, conducted the visitor through the morning classes on a tour of observation."

1952 Bakersfield, California "The marionette troupe of Mr. and Mrs. William Switzler will be presented in a benefit performance at the Lincoln School auditorium 7:30 p.m. tonlght. Sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association, proceeds will be used to help defray expenses of the boys' a cappella choir when it goes to Tucson, Ariz., to take part in a musical festival. The Taft young people who will be "pulling the strings" on the marionettes inclnde Linda Williams, Dick Switzler, Regina Simmons, Phyllis Cranmer, Jerry Ault, Paul Swltzler, John Anderson, Eric Boardman, Eric Ras- mnssen, Jerry Strang, Lynne Knienborn and Linda Besse. Carolyn Williams and Mary Watts will provide the sound effects. The enterprising group under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Switzler has constructed its own marionettes, worked out its own routines, and written its own scripts. Throughout the spring and summer the group met one morning each week in the interest of furthering the hobby. Tickets may be purchased from choir members or at the door."

So is William T. Switzler 1905-1999 # 78780416.

Ted Alan Switzler, born October 14, 1935, died August 24, 1997 in Duval County, Florida.

1955 Bakersfield " Paul Switzler of Taft was one of three piano finalists in the Kimber music scholarship award competition of Central Section, California Music Educators Association Festival, in Fresno. Other piano finalists were high school seniors from China Lake and Fresno. Switzler, a high school freshman, is a pupil of Rosalie Liggett.

Pianist PAUL SWITZLER earned his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the University of the Pacific Conservatory at Stockton, California. His primary studies were under Edward Shadbolt, who was a student of Bela Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. Paul is known for his expertise at coaching and accompanying aspiring artists.
