"June Maxine (Kyle) Shideler, age 88, passed away January 28, 2017, in Denver, Colorado. June was born on Mary 30, 1928 to Charles and Rachel (Harwood) Kyle at the farm home 15 miles north of Flagler, Colorado. She was the second of 7 children. After attending grades 1-8 at Mt. Pleasant country school, she graduated from Flagler High School in 1945. She told her parents when she was in the second grade she wanted to be a teacher. She attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado, with a degree in Business Education and Math, graduating in 1959. At 18 years of age, during WWII, she taught at "The Walker School" north of Flagler for one year because they were so short of teachers, then going back to college. She also taught one year in Vona, Colorado, teaching Math to the 3rd and 6th graders. June married Jack R. Shideler of Greeley on September 3, 1948. To this union 3 children were born: Shirley Anne of Denver, John Richard II, of Ogallala, Nebraska, and James "Jim" Arthur of Flagler, CO. Jack worked in the 'oil fields' for some time when they were first married. Then they moved north of Flagler around 1954. She taught at the 'Sunny Slope' country school north of Arriba, 4 years, before the school was closed. The surrounding community made their own fun, where they had school programs and activities for everyone. She began teaching at Flagler High School in 1959, teaching all the Business subjects and some of the Math classes. In 1969 she received her Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She helped many students into colleges, receive Scholarships, Grants and local monies, as well as teaching Business Classes. Teaching in Flagler for 24 years, retiring in 1983, she truly loved her students and would always strive to do her best. I'm sure there are plenty of 'student' stories to be told, where a sense of humor might be necessary. Jack and June built a home north of Flagler in the late 60's, where the family resided until the mid 1970's. June and Jack divorced in 1970. In the summers, June and a friend, Fran Richardson of Empire, Colorado, enjoyed four different Freighter ship trips, two around the world, one to Japan and Taiwan, and one down the east coast of South America docking at several ports. After retiring, June spent 8 years living in Oahu, Hawaii, in Waikiki and in Kaneohe. She worked part time for the Business Company, Systemforms, in Hawaii for nearly 7 years. When her boss, Mr. Swan passed away, she had to close the business for his family. In 1995, she moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado to help manage Big Spruce Cabins, which she, her daughter, Shirley, and her husband bought. After selling out to them, she moved to North West Las Vegas, Nevada, buying part of a duplex in the Del Webb's housing development, living there 11 years. She was very active in the Las Vegas-Sun City Summerlin Quilt Club (approx. 100 members). She was involved in several roles, as a Director, a Vice President, and President in 2003. She has made many beautiful quilts and various other projects. She was also involved in her Home Owner's Association where she lived, holding the offices of, Director, then Treasurer. June made so many friends wherever she went. She sold her home in September 2006 and moved to Denver to be closer to family after having "Open Heart" surgery. Several other surgeries followed. Such as a knee replacement and health related hospitalizations. However, once again she made many good friends in Windsor Gardens. She is survived by her 3 children, Shirley of Denver, John of Ogallala, Nebraska, Jim & Kelly of Flagler, and grandson Justin of Atlanta, Georgia. Her siblings Theresa Copley of Denver, Vada Carey of Lakewood, Meredith Hase of Highlands Ranch, and Bill Grimes, her brother-in-law from Flagler. Plus numerous nieces and nephews! June was preceded in death by her former husband, Jack R. Shideler, of Vona, Colorado. Her parents, Charles and Rachel Kyle. Brothers, Marion Kyle, Glenn Kyle, and a sister, Marilyn Grimes, all who were residing in Flagler." She was the fifth child of seven born to this union. Mary Lou graduated from Flagler High School in 1955. Following graduation she attended Colorado State College for three years. She worked for IBM at the Martin Marietta plant in Denver and for Packard Bell in Los Angeles, CA. Mary Lou married William Grimes on March 13, 1960 in Flagler Colorado. To this union two sons were born Bradford William and Roger Frank. The couple made their home in Flagler where Mary Lou helped her mother in Rachel's dress shop for twelve years and assisted Bill with the family farm.
