Jerry H. Baptist, 6 South 49 West
In 1870 Morgan County, Illinois, Joseph and LaKider Baptiste are both 50, with Josiah 17,
Samuel 16, Elias 15, Daniel 14, Jerry, Maria/Nina 10, and John 7.
In 1880 Morgan County, Illinois, Jerry is 23, farming with his brother Elias 23.
Their mother Lucinda 52 and brother John 18 are with them.
Joseph V. Baptist 1822-1909 # 89170062 and Lucretia 1820-1892 # 89170126 are buried in Jacksonville, Morgan County.
April 11, 1931 "Elias Baptist, lifelong resident of Morgan county,
died at 6 o'clock last night at the Jacksonville State hospital,
where he had been a patient for many years. Most of his life was spent on a farm
in the Ebenezer neighborhood. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baptist,
preceded him in death. He is survived by three brothers, John Baptist of this city,
Jesse Baptist and Jerry Baptist of Supply, Okla. The body was taken to the Arthur G. Cody Funeral Home"
1937 Jacksonville, Illinois - this is perhaps a brother?
"Joseph Baptist, the last survivor of hundreds of Civil war veterans who enlisted in
Jacksonville, will celebrate his 101st birthday anniversary Saturday at the home
of his son, Fred Baptist, 1104 South Twelfth street. Springfield, with whom he resides.
Mr. Baptist was a resident of Jacksonville until eight years ago. A number of his
relatives reside in this city. In observance of the anniversary,
visitors will be received at the home between 2 and 4 30 p.m. Saturday.
Frank Baptist, proprietor of the A. ? Bakery on East State street,
and J. W. Baptist of Beesley avenue are nephews of the centenarian.
Mrs. C. C. Olner, residing north of the city, is a niece.
The aged man was born near Funchal, Madeira, and at the age of 10 years was forced
to flee the island with his family because of religious persecution.
After spending two years and three months on the island of Trinidad,
he came to New York in 1849, remaining there until fall, when he came to Jacksonville.
He went to Springfield eight years ago, following the death of his wife.
On returning to Morgan county from service in the Civil war, Mr. Baptist
followed the occupation of carpenter. He retired from active work when
70 years old. Mr Baptist always has prided himself that he did not apply for a
soldier's pension as long as he could work at his trade. When he quit active
work as a carpenter he applied for his pension. "Uncle Sam owes me nothing, and
I will not apply for a pension as long as I can earn a living."
Mr. Baptist has been heard to say a number of times. Although almost totally blind,
Mr. Baptist’s health is good, considering his advanced age.
While he doesn't go out, he goes up and down the stairs of his
son's home unassisted."
In 1885 Phelps County, Nebraska, Jerry is teaching school, living with brother Samuel 30, and his family - Julia and three daughters.
Next household is a Jerry/Jesse Baptist 31 farming with wife Grace 28, Clyde 8, Blanch 6, Grace 3 and Arthur 1.
Jesse had married Grace King in Hannibal, Missouri October 18, 1875.

In 1880 Scotland County, Missouri, Carrie Adams is six months old, with Walter 41 and America 34. William R. is 14, Philip 13. Arthur 12, Elsie #. 8, Laura 7, Land Lavina 5.
In 1900 Scotland County, C.E. Adams born November 1879 in Missouri, is with W. G. Adams 61 and A.E. 54. Brother W.R. is 34, P.T. 33, A.G. 31, E.E. 29, and Nina 24.
Walter G. Adams 1839-1906 is buried in Mountain Park, Oklahoma # 24541486.
So is America E. Adams 1845-1921 # 24541298.
In 1910 Kiowa County, Oklahoma, Genvieve Adams 64 is widowed, William 44, Arthur 41, Elsie 38, Laura 37, adn Lavina 30. So that has to be the family of Carrie.
In 1900 Jerry is with his widowed father in Morgan County, born May 1858 in Illinois.
Eli 43 and John 39 are with them, too.
In 1901 Snyder, Oklahoma, J.H. Baptist and Neil Cotton presented a discussion of "What a Teacher May Properly Expect of the Parents and School Board" to the Kiowa County Teachers' Association.
In 1908, Jerry H. Baptist was a witness for the land claim of Willard S. Davis for land in 3N 10W - the Snyder, Oklahoma area.
J.H. Baptist, 49, married Carrie E. Adams in Comanche County, Oklahoma on July 18, 1909.
Witnesses were J. H. Miller and Mrs. G. R. M. Miller, both of Mountain Park, Oklahoma.

In 1910, Jerry "Babtiste" is farming in Kiowa County, Oklahoma 51,
born in Illinois, with Carrie 30 born in Missouri.
In 1920, J. H. Baptist is farming in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, 61,
with Cary 39 born in Missouri. Inez 9, Lila 8, and Mildred 6 were born in Oklahoma.
Jerry H. Baptist 1858- July 29, 1940 is buried in Fort Supply, Oklahoma # 59682218,
"He was admitted before 1930 as a patient to the Western State Mental Hospital and died there many years later."
Jerry was in the hospital in 1930, and Carrie and the three daughters are in Kiowa County. Carrie is widowed.
Carrie was in Kiowa County in 1940, widowed. Mildred is 26, married to Willis E. Messick, 30 and laborer, born in Oklahoma.
Carrie E. Baptist November 28, 1879-December 1, 1969 is buried in Kiowa County, Oklahoma # 24542718.
Their daughter Inez is buried in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Memorial services for Inez L. Baptist Beaver, 84, Clovis, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at 21st. Street Church of Christ. . Cecil Bunch and Art Lynch will officiate.
Her body will be laid to rest at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Tulsa, Okla.
Steed-Todd Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Beaver died Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994, at Plains Medical/Clovis. She was born June 23, 1910,
to Jerry and Carrie Baptist in Mountain Park, Okla. After completing elementary and high school in Mountain Park she attended and received a bachelor of science degree from Central State College in Edmond, Okla., and a master of arts degree from Eastern New Mexico University. She had taught school for six years before moving to Portales, and then taught at Portales Junior High School for 21 years. After moving to Clovis and marrying Mr. Lee Beaver on May 27, 1963, in Lawton, Okla., she taught at Marshall and Yucca Junior Highs for 11 years. She was a member of 21st Street Church of Christ.
Survivors to mourn her loss are her husband, Lee Beaver of Clovis; one stepson, Nolan Beaver, Clovis; several step-nieces; one sister, Lela Lauen, Tulsa; three nephews, John Wayne Spavinaw, Okla., Leland Lauen, Tulsa, and Ray Don Lauen, Vidor, Texas; several grandnieces; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Lela E. (Baptist) Lauen 1912-2002 is buried in Broken Arrow # 125549551, with John J. Laueauen 1909-1969.
"Lauen, Lela Etta (Baptist), 90, homemaker, died Saturday. Visitation 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, both at Mark Griffith Memorial-West- wood Funeral Home; and graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday, Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, Broken Arrow."
Their son John married Patricia Chandler in 1966 in Abilene, Texas - he was from Tulsa and had attended Abilene Christian College.
1975 Chillicothe, Missouri "The name of Joy Susanna has been chosen for the new arrival of Mr. and Mrs. John Lauen, 1605 Jennings" place, born Monday, May 5 at Hedrick Medical Center. She weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John J. Lauen, Tulsa, Okla., and Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Chandler, Pampa, Tex., are the maternal grandparents. Mr. Lauen is manager of Gibson's Discount Center and Mrs. Lauen taught at the Chillicothe High School in the English department."
Mildred L. Messick 1913-1972 is buried in Kiowa County # 24840334.
So is Willie E. Messick 1909-1987 # 24840424.
