Thanks to Peter Hakze for the following: Willem Gerardus Weststeijn was born in April 1896 in the former truck farmers village of Loosduinen, since 1923 a southwestern seaside district of the city of Den Haag (The Hague), located in the southwestern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland, the first son of Willem Weststeijn (34 y, basketmaker) and Elisabeth Tatt, who married on 31 oktober 1888 in Loosduinen. Source: scan of his birth certificate. He was named for his paternal grandfather Willem Gerardus Weststeijn and a six years older brother of Joan Everard Weststeijn, Find A Grave Memorial# 156841035. In May 1910 William G (14 y, born in Holland), his father William Weststeyn (49, Holland, farmer), his mother Elizabeth (48, Holland) and his brother Joan E Weststeyn (8, born in Holland), were living at their own farm in the area of Vona town, Kit Carson County, located in the eastern part of Colorado. In fact they were living in the small, former settlement of Elphis, located about 16 miles north and one mile west of Vona, where at least 30 Dutch immigrant families have lived once. Elphis had in the period 1926-1923 a rural post office, was abandoned about 1945 and doesn't exist anymore since then. Right next to them his uncle Peter Weststeyn (45, Holland, single and farmer at his own farm too). They all five immigrated in 1902. In June 1917 Willem Geradus Weststeyn (21, farming with his parents in Vona) was administrated on a WW I Draft Registration Card. He was short and of medium build, had blue eyes and light brown hair. On 18 December 1919 the 23 years old Willem G Weststeyn and the one year younger Lelia M Grant were married in Vona, Kit Carson County, Colorado, by a Baptist minister. In 1910 Lelia M Garant (12, Iowa) was the oldest of five children of Fred U Grant (32, Iowa) and Blanche S Grant (27, Missouri), living in Van Buren Township, Lee County, located in the extreme southeastern part of Iowa. In February 1920 William G Weststeyn (23, Holland, immigrated in 1901, grain farmer), his wife Lelia M (22, Iowa, teacher at a public school) and his brother John E Weststeyn (18, Holland, immigrated in 1901, farm laborer) were living at a rented farm in Township 6 in Kit Carson County, Colorado, likely still in Elphis. In 1930 Pasadena, California Wilem is a carpenter, Lela a teacher, with Jean E. 6 born in California. John E. 29 is a truck driver. In 1933 Pasadena, Wm. G. (Lela M.) is a carpenter, living at 3177 Mission. In April 1940 William G. Weststeyn (43, foreman carpenter in the building construction industry) and his wife Lola (42) were living in their own house, worth $7100, at 600 Castano Avenue in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California. They lived in 1935 in the same place, but in another house. ON A SUPPLEMENTAL CENSUS PAGE IS JEAN E. WESTSTEYN, 16, born in California. = In 1942 Willem Gerarados Weststeyn (46) and his wife were still living at 600 Castano Avenue, Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California, when he was administrated on a WW II Draft Registration Card. Willem G. Weststeyn died in November 1969 at the age of 73 years in Orange County, located immediately southeast of Los Angeles, California. Because William had no children and his only brother John stayed single this Weststeyn branch died out. Lela Weststeyn, born October 7, 1897, died on April 1983 in Orange County, father Grant, mother Northrup, , last residence of Costa Mesa, California. |
