Kit Carson County Pioneers:
Leendert "Henry" and Elzora (Williams) Van Leeuwen, 6 South 48 West
In 1857 the Fourth of July band leader was D. Van Loon, father of Wm. Van Loon and brother of Gideon Van Loon who came from Holland to Pella in 1849, and lived 2 miles west of Pella. D. Van Loon was born May 30, 1819 in the city of Utrecht Netherlands. He left that place and landed in 1855 at New Orleans, came up the Mississippi to Keokuk where he stayed that winter and came to Pella in the spring of 1856. In the fall of that year they organized a brass band. That is the celebration mentioned in this book for 1857.
D. Van Loon served for 8 years in the Holland army as a
musician. He played in the royal band during his service
time. In the year 1858 or '59 when the State Fair
was held at Oskaloosa, Mr Van loon took his corps to
the fair and won the prize as having the best band
in Iowa. He was a stone mason by trade; he built a
brick house west of Pella, on the Knoxville road and
also several houses in Pella. He built a house for
himself on the street south of the old brewery.
In 1880 he moved to Oakley, Kansas, where he went
into business as a livestock buyer. He died 20th
of Aug, 1896 and was buried at Oakley."
"The Dirk Van Loon House, also known as the Rock House, is an historic residence located in Pella, Iowa, United States. Van Loon was a native of the Netherlands who immigrated to Pella in 1856. He bought this property from Dominie Scholte, the town's founder.[2] Van Loon built the single-story, coarsely dressed, native limestone structure, and the frame addition off the back as his family grew. In 1875 he became a homesteader in Kansas. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
In 1870 Marion County, Iowa, H. Van Loen is 10,
with parents D. 51 and H., 40. C. 21 and D.H. sons are farming. Sisters J. 15 , D. 13, and M. 12 born in Iowa. The oldest four were all born in Holland.
In 1880 Gove County, Kansas, David "Van Coone" is 62, Henry 22, Lizzie 17, Paul 14, and Nettie 10.
In 1884 David Van Loon was in the Gove County directory,
a live stock raiser at "HACKBERRY. A postoffice, formerly known as Hackberry Mills, in Gove county (unorganized), 10 miles south of Grinnell, on the K. div. of the P. Ry, whence it has a tri-weekly mail. Nearest bank at Ellis. Van Smith, postmaster. "
David Van Loon proved up a quarter in Gove County, Kansas, 12S 32W in 1890.
Henry Van Loon proved up a quarter in Gove County, 12S 31W in 1880.
Dick Van Loon cash-claimed a quarter in Gove County, Kansas, 11S 29W in 1888.
Christian Van Loon proved up aquarter in Logan County, Kansas, 12S 32W in 1890.
1890 Oakley Graphic "David VAN LOON celebrated the 71st anniversary of his birthday at his home eight miles southeast of Oakley on Decoration Day in the presence of 9 children and 17 grandchildren. He felt as young as in the days of 1830-31, when a war broke out between Hollad (sic) and Belgium. He was in that 15 days battle when two regiments of Dutch Hussars held 75,000 French soldiers for 15 days at Ft. Yetchel. May a wise providence save him to live among his children and grandchildren for many years to come. Mr. VAN LOON is one of Logan county's oldest settlers. He came here in the spring of 1880 with four children, Henry, Paul, Elizabeth and Hattie, and thirty cows. There were then plenty of buffalo bones and scattered bands of Indians. He is a successful cattle man at present.

Elzora Williams is in Osage County, Missouri in 1880, age 8, with parents W.R. Williams and hariet A. both 27. Arthur is 5, and Coraetta 1.
Arthur is likely the one buried in Checotah, Oklahoma 1875-1954 # 75185020.
In 1900 Cheyenne County, Colorado, Lenhard Van Leeuwen is farming,
born Sept 1861 in Iowa, married 12 years to Elzora, November 1872 Indiana.
Her six children are still living. Lenhart Oct 1889 Kansas,
Harry Sept 1891, Mary January 1894, Edgar August 1895, Nettie July 1897, and ELmer May 1899 were born in COlorado.

August 1902 Kiowa County, Colorado Press "Mr. Vanloon, stockman, who has been living at Pilot, Colorado, has moved north of Galatea."
June 1904 Kiowa County "W. H. Gear has sold his
interest in the ranch to Raymond Miller. Mr. Gear went to
Henry Van Loon's to take care of his ranch
while Mr. VanLoon and wife go to St. Louis to attend the
Fair."
Henry Van Loon of Galatea, Colorado, registered a
brand, the "Rocking W" for his thoroughbred Herefords ranging on Rush Creeka nd Big Sandy in 1904.

Leeuwen claimed a tract in sections 8 and 19, 6 South, 48W in 1920.
They're also in Denver in 1920, Henry 58 is retired, Elzora 46, Elmer 20, Henry 18, and Homer 16.
In 1930 Denver, at 2929 Welton Street, Henry 69 and Elzora 58 have Homer, 27. None have occupations.

Elmer, age 21, married Margaret McArthur in Littleton on May 12, 1920.
In 1930 Denver, Elmer is running a confectionary, 30, with Margaret 32 born in Kansas. They have Gladis 8. Margaret's mother Mary MacArthur is with them, widowed, 70, born in Canada English.
Gladys, born in Denver July 15, 1921, died August 3, 1997, buried there on thes same stone as Elmer 189901937 and Margaret.
HENRY
Henry registered for WWI in Thermopolis, Wyoming, a fireman for the CB&Q, born June 23, 1900, nearest relative Henry Van Loon, Sr. of 2929 Welton in Denver.
In 1930, Henry is in Seattle, a restaurant waiter, 29, married to Paulina 25 born in Missouri.
Henry is divorced in 1940 Seattle, a restaurant waiter, 38.
HOMER
Homer E. VanLoon, 28, married Ruby H. Stone on January 15, 1931 in Littleton, Colorado.
Homer and Ruby had Henry Paul Vanloon on July 21, 191 in Denver.
He's buried in Denver 1903-1977 # 53601075, with Ruby 1904-1946 # 53601077.

Paul 1931-2005 is buired in Denver # 53601074.
NETTIE
Nettie Van Loon, age 19, married Chester Louis Samuelson on May 17, 1917 in Castle Rock, Colorado.
In 1920 they're in Denver, next to the Van Loon family, Chester is a machinist, 29 and Nettie 22.
In 1930 Denver, Chester is a machinist in an auto factory, 39, Nettie 32, with Ralph 9, and Marvin 2.
Ralph, born in Denver June 21, 1920, died November 1977.
Just for information - Henry's aunt Christina married John Rietveld of Marion County, Iowa.
"On the 28th of October, 1864, Mr. Rietveld was married to Miss Christina Van Loon,
who was born in Woerden, Holland, on the 28th of July, 1843,
a daughter of Gideon and Elizabeth Hendriene (Solsbergen) Van Loon.
In June, 1849, she was brought by her parents to this country,
the family home being established at Pella. Her father engaged in cultivating a small farm,
which he purchased and improved, and he and his wife resided there until called to
their reward, he in 1907 at the age of eighty nine years, and she in 1899 when
seventy three years old. Both were consistent members of the Dutch Reformed church.
All of their six children are still living, those besides Mrs. Rietveld being: James, Dierk, Gideon, Mrs. Mary Bogaard and Miss Elizabeth, who resides with her eldest brother, who is unmarried. Mr. and Mrs. Rietveld have ten children: Delia; Mrs. Elizabeth Weirs; Mrs. Jennie Vanderwal; Mrs. Marie Sells; John and Gideon, both of whom are married; Mrs. Bertha De Young; and Cora, Katherine and Lois, all at home.
