WILBUR
In 1900 Wilbur is in Jewell County, Kansas, born June 1884, a farm laborer for parents Samuel E. and Annie E. Shively, both 49. Jessie A. is 21, Benjamin F. 19, mariln L. 17, Wilbur E. 15, Isora J. 14,
FLoyd R. and Florence M. both 10. Samuel's single sister Mary A. 54, born in Pennsylvania is also with them.
Wilbur's a plasterer in 1910 Jewell County, 25, still living with parents Samuel and Anna.
Floyd 19 and grand-daughter Wauneta 4 , and Mary 66 are with them.
His brother, John C. Shively, was also in Kit Carson County, marrying Maggie McLean, and is buried in Kirk, Colorado 1888-1957.
Wilbur 1884-1910 is buried in Esbon, Jewell County, Kansas, His parents Samuel 1850-1917 and Anna E. (Piper) Shively 1851-1932 are also buried there.
"Samuel E. Shively was born in Mifflinburg, PA, Sept. 2, 1950, died in Otego, Kansas, Jan. 2, 1917, being 66 years, 4 months of age. -- In 1875 he was united in marriage to Anna E. Piper at Dallas Center, Iowa, to which union were born ten children: Ottie S. Shively of Lebanon; John C. Shively, Tuttle Colo.; Jessie A. Shively, Athol, Ks.; Isora I. Vilott, of Missouri; and Maud C. Rhoads, Benjamin F. Shively, Marion F. Shively, Florence R. Shively, all of Otego, and Wilbur E. Shively, who passed on before in 1910. -- In 1884 he moved to Kansas residing on a farm south of Otego for a number of years, for the last 19 years of his life residing at the place of his demise in Otego. -- His last days were spent in patient suffering, being stricken by paralysis, follwed in the end by pneumonia. -- Being pronounced a MAN by all of his innumerable friends. -- His life is done and at its end he leave to mourn his demise: -- A wife and nin children, one sister, two brothers and a host of relatives and friends."

train which happened two miles east of Clayton, Kansas."
"W. E. Shively of Otego Kansas, a cousin of Ben F. Shively, of Valley Falls was
one of the number killed in the Rock Island railroad wreck in Norton county last
Friday morning when our neighbor John Sloop lost his life. Wilbur E. Shively was about
25 years of age. He was on his way to Colorado where he was homesteading to visit a sister [perhaps this was really his brother John]
and occupy his claim. He had been on the fated train a few hours only. In the first report of the wreck his post office was given as Agar and friends here were not sure at the time that a relative was among the slain. Confirmation came later. These railroad fatalities are getting too near to home."
" "Wilbur E. Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Shively, of Otego, was born on a farm south of Otego, July 14th, 1884. Was killed near Clayton, Kansas en route for Colorado, Friday morning, Sept. 23, 1910. He was therefore 26 years, 2 months and 9 days of age when he met his untimely end. He leaves to mourn his departure, a father and mother, six brothers, three sisters, their families and a host of friends. Wilbur was a young man of ideal habits, he was widely acquainted having grown to manhood in this neighborhood, and among all his acquaintances he was greatly beloved. He had a homestead near Siebert, Colo. and on Thursday evening he boarded No. 27 with the intention of visiting his claim and spending some little time there. But alas for Wilbur and many others, 27 ran into a washout just east of Clayton, and when the wreckage was cleared away it was found that Wilbur was among the killed. Two brothers reside near Siebert, Colo., one of whom was visiting here at this time, the other was immediately apprized by wire of the sad accident but he failed to get the message. But learning of the wreck and becoming anxious about his brother, he boarded the train and came to Norton where he leaned that his worst fears were real and that his brothers body had been taken home. He immediately came on, arriving here Sunday morning. One brother lives at Athol, one ten miles south, of Esbon, while the remainder of the family live at or near Otego. Funeral services were held Sunday p.m. in the M.E. Church where a crowd of between four and five hundred people gathered to pay their last respects to an old and trusted friend. The services were conducted by his home, and the neighboring, Esbon, Camp of M.W.A. Rev. Carlton preached the sermon. The S.S., Ladies Aid, W.C.T.U., M.W.A. as well as many individuals, sent offerings of flowers, making the floral display only one of many features that marked the great love and respect in which the community help him. Interment was made in the Esbon cemetery."
Wilbur's heirs claimed a tract in 2, 6S, 48W in 1917.
BEN
In 1910 Ben is farming in Yuma County, Kirk precinct, 29, born in Iowa, parents in Pennsylvania.
Ben proved up two quarters in 26 and 35, 5S 48W, Yuma County, in 1916 - that would be a mile from the Kit Carson line.
Ben is back in Jewell County, Kansas, when registering for WWI, and is with his mother Anna in the 1920 census, and in 1930, single, living with mother Anna, 79.
He's buried in Jewell County 1880-1959 # 41615436.
