Garmer P. and Mary E. (Brownlee) Shaffer, 6 South 48 West



In 1880 Warren County, Illinois, Mary Brownlee is 15, with parents Thomas 53 , a farmer and Mary R. 51. Anna is 25, Hannah J. 28, Alice L. 20, William L. 18, Mary E. 15, John 10, Thomas C. 13, Chester 8.

Peter Gaumer Shaffer 1820-1908 is buried in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, # 30742916, with Lucinda 1826-1909 # 30742990 "Mrs. Lucinda Shaffer died at her home on North Main street, March 15, 1909, after an illness of something more than a year. She was 84 years old and had been a sufferer from heart trouble for some time, and for days her condition had been quite critical. She was born 1825 in Summerset county, Pa., her maiden name being Lucinda Benford. She was married to Peter Shaffer in August 1844, and the couple came to Illinois in 1861 settling first in Ogle county, then coming to Warren county in 1864. First they settled on a farm near Monmouth, where they made their home from twenty years, then moved into Monmouth in the spring of 1884. They were the parents of five children, three of whom survived her, namely, Mrs. C.D. Keener of El Paso, Texas, John B. Shaffer of Clarinda, Iowa and G.P. Shaffer, of Dodge City, Kansas. AL three were here at the time of their mother's death. Her husband had died a few months before her death. She had been an active member of the Presbyterian church, and her funeral was conducted by Dr. W.R. King, with burial in Monmouth cemetery.    "

Possible relative - but not a parent : September 8, 1900 Newton, Kansas "Word was received yesterday after noon that Peter Shaffer died at his home in Hutchinson, yesterday morning at 9 o'olock. He had been ill of heart trouble, and for the put two weeks, was confined to his bed by dropsy. He was one of the oldest settlers in Reno county, and was well known to all former residents of Nick- ergon. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock in charge of the Odd Fellows' lodge."
This is his wife : April 15, 1903 Newton, Kansas "Mrs. Peter Shaffer, well known among the formerly of Nickerson people, died yesterday in Hutchinson. "

Garmer P. Shaffer, age 25, son of Peter Shaffer and Lucinda T. Benford, married Mary E. Brownlee, age 19, daughter of Thomas Brownlee and Mary R. Smiley, in 1884 in Warren County, Illinois.
Mason Sweasey claimed two quarters in 28, 6 South, 48W in 1891. A month later Garmer P. Shaffer cash-claimed a quarter next to him.

Then in 1895 Garmer proved up a quarter in 34, 8S 48W - about twelve miles south - closer to the railroad.

Then in 1900 Garmer timber-claimed 120 acres in that same section 34.

In 1900 Garmer is in the Vernon County, Missouri census, born May 1859 in Pennsylvania, Mary Feb 1865 in Illinois. Grace H. was born October 1886 in Illinois, Inez Sept 1888 Nebraska, Harry March 1890 Herbert October 1892, and Carl P. October 1894 born in Colorado.


Mary Elizabeth (Brownlee) Shaffer 1865-1903 is buried in Dodge City, Kansas # 115489144.

In 1905 Dodge City, Kansas, G. P. is 45, Grace 19, Inez 17, Harry 15, Herbert 13, Carl 10, Lucy 4, and Paul 1.

In 1910 Garmer is a real estate agent in Syracuse, Kansas, 50, widowed. Inez B. is 21, Harry B. 19 a tile cutter, Herbert 17, Carl P. 14, Mary L. 9, born in Missouri, and Paul M. 6 in Kansas.

Garmer is living alone in 1920 Syracuse, farming.

In 1930 he's in Glendale (Arapahoe County - now Yuma County, Colorado), farming. He's next to Tony 58 and Mary 65 Zangari, both Italian, and John 65 and Mattie 61 Miller.

In 1932 Garmer is delinquent on taxes for land in 4 S, 67 W, Arapahoe County, except 5 acres sold to "Harrison L. Shaffer, Inc."

Garmer Peter Shaffer 1859-1946 is buried in Denver # 36977558 "Husband of Mary Elizabeth (Brownlee) Shaffer and son of Peter Garmer Shaffer and Lucinda Harriett (Benford)Shaffer.

September 14, 1945 Emporia, Kansas "Garmer P. Shaffer, father of Mrs. C. V. Morris, 933 Oak, died this week in Denver, after being sick with pneumonia the past 10 days. Burial was in the Fairmont cemetery in Denver.
Mr. Shaffer was born May 25, 1857, in Pennsylvania. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Dellinger, Liberal, Mrs. Morris, Emporia; and Miss Inez Shaffer, Denver, four sons, Harrison L. Amarillo, Texas, Bert Shaffer, San Francisco, Calif., Carl P. Shaffer, Lubbock, Texas, Paul M. Shaffer, New York City; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Shaffer and one daughter preceded him in death."

Garmer's sister Dalmantha married a Keener, and Calvin Keener, born about 1874, married Mary F. Burnes in Golden, Colorado Dec 30, 1903.

Calvin is buried in Glendale, California 1872-1941, with Mae F. 1875-1955.

GRACE

Walter H. Dellinger and Grace H. Shaffer married August 18, 1909, the marriage recorded in Denver.

In 1910 Dodge City, Kansas, W. H. Dellinger is a packer in a flour mill, 22, born in Kansas, with Grace 24 in Illinois.
In 1920 they're in Eden, Sumner County, Kansas, with Mildred E., 9. Walter is a clergyman in the Methodist Church.
In 1925 Comanche County, Kansas, Walter "A." Dellinger is 37, Grace H. 39, E. Mildred 14, and Janvier 1. Grace's sister Inez Shaffer is with them.

In September 1928, Walter "of the Protection M. E. Church" preached a sermon in Comanche County, Kansas.
In 1930 they're in Guymon, Oklahoma, with Mildred and "Jambier" W., 6. both kids born in Kansas.

1938 "Dr. Fisher resigned as superintendent of the Liberal district several weeks ago. The chain ot events following took Rev. Walter Dellinger from Pratt to superin- Icndency of the Liberal district; Rev. C. C. Brown from Kingman to the Pratt pastorate; Rev. Ernest Hull from Liberal to Kingman; Rev. R. T. Powell from Ulysses to Liberal; Rev. Lloyd Kellams from Langdon to Ulysses, and finally, Rev. Stockwell to Langdon. "

In 1940 they're in Liberal Kansas, Harrison W. 52, Grace 54, and Janvier 16. They were in Pratt, Kansas in 1935.

1944 "The Dodge City-Liberal district of the Methodist church, headed for 6 years by Rev. Walter H. Dellinger, of Liberal, as superintendent, is the only district in Kansas which finished the past year with every church clear of all indebtedness."


September 6, 1973 " Mrs. Grace Dellinger, 87, former Liberal, Kansas resident, died Tuesday at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson. Born Oct. 24, 1886 at Monmouth, Illinois, she was married to Walter H. Dellinger, Aug. 18, 1909, at Denver, Colo. He died in 1971.
She lived at Hutchinson one year. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Liberal; Eastern Star.
Survivors are a daughter: Mrs. Harold Elliott, Russell; brother: Paul Shaffer, San Diego, Calif.; sisters: Mrs. Lou Morris, Emporia; Inez Shaffer, Denver; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church; Rev. Vern Livengood. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery." # 10732094.

Walter 1885-1973 is also buried there, # 10732086 "Son of Thomas E. and Josie E. Dellinger."


Mildred # 11806785 is buried in Meade County, Kansas.

Edith Mildred Elliott, daughter of Rev. Walter H. and Grace (Shaffer) Dellinger, was born May 20, 1910, at Dodge City, KS. Her death occurred Nov. 15, 1985 at the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 25 days.
Mildred lived much of her early life in south central and southwest Kansas. She received her basic education in the schools in the towns where her father ministered. She received her degree in education at Southwestern College at Winfield, KS. On June 4, 1935, she was united in marriage to Harold Roy Elliott at Pratt, KS. To this union was born two children, Joan and Donald.
As well as being a devoted wife and mother, she taught sixth grade many years at Courtside and Ruppenthal Schools until her retirement in 1975.She also took an active role in supporting the Russell Schools, music programs, and closely followed the exploits of the athletic teams. She was a resident of Russell since 1938.
She was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, UMW, Russell Co. Retired Teachers Assoc., and American Assoc. of University Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold who died on Dec. 31, 1984, and her parents. Survivors: son, Don of Carrollton, TX; daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Joan) Rusk, Auburn, AL; 4 grandchildren and one gt. grandson.

Neither Grace nor Edith's obituary mentions Janvier...
But Rita Dalene (Swaim) Dellinger 1941-1998, daughter of Frankie Dale Swaimand Lorain J. Swaim is mentioned in reference to Dodge City



LUCINDA

Lucinda age 19, married Ivan Carroll Moore on October 16, 1920 in Clarke County, Washington.
Ivan Carroll Moore was born about 1899 in Colorado to Albert Moore and Eva Simpson.
In 1930 Portland, Ivan is 30, Lucinda 29.


In 1940 Portland, Ivan is 34, a bookkeeeper, married but no spouse, living with parents Albert and Evelyn and brother Claud A. 49.

In 1955 Findlay, Ohio, there's an I Carol (Marge) working for Ohio Oil.

INEZ

In 1925 Comanche County, Kansas, Walter "A." Dellinger is 37, Grace H. 39, E. Mildred 14, and Janvier 1. Grace's sister Inez Shaffer is with them.

Inez Brownlee Shaffer, born September 23, 1887 in Minden, Nebraska to Garner Peter Shaffer & Mary Elizabeth (Benford) Shaffer. She died in Denver, Colorado on October 16, 1977. She was never married. She was said to have had many cats. 

October 26, 1977 Emporia, Kansas "News was received by Mrs. C.V. Morris, 201 East Seventh Ave., of the recent death of her sister, Inez B. Shaffer, of Denver, Colorado. Funeral services and burial were in Denver. Miss Shaffer was born Sept. 24, 1887, in Minden, Neb. She is survived by her sister and one brother, Paul M. Shaffer of San Diego, Calif. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers."

HERBERT

Herbert, born 1892 at Vona, Colorado, died in 1964 in Fresno, California, buried there

March 6, 1964 Fresno "Graveside services for Bert Shaffer, 71, a Fresno resident for 35 years, were held today in the IOOF Cemetery. He died Saturday after a short illness. A native of Seibert, Colo., Shaffer lived in San Francisco before moving to Fresno. He was a retired farm worker. Shaffer was a member of the ....He is survived by three brothers, Paul M. of San Diego, Carl P. of Lubbock. Tex., and H. L. of Amarillo, Tex., and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lou Morris of Emporia of Liberal, Kan., .. Mrs. Ruth ... and Inez B Shaffer of Denver, Colorado. ."

CARL

Lenora Louise Shaffer was born Feb 23, 1919 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, listed as Stewart when dying Sept 14, 1999.

In 1930 Carl is farming in Syracuse, Kansas, 35, with Georgina T. 33 born in Kansas. Lenora L. 11 was born in Massachusetts, and Garmer C. Shaffer, 10 in Kansas. Georgina's father Royal E. Bray, 67, widowed, born in Ohio, is with them.

Royal 1861-1938 is buried in Syracuse # 29721981.


Carl, born October 4, 1894 in Colorado, died in Lubbock, Texas May 2, 1967, working for Internal Revenue. He's buried in Lubbock # 118492227, with Georgina T. Shaffer 1897-1995 # 118492154.

May 3, 1967 Lubbock "Funeral arrangements were pending late Tuesday with Sanders Funeral Home for Carl P. Shaffer, 72, 2009 22nd, Lubbock resident for 35 years, who died shortly after being admitted to West Texas Hospital following an apparent heart attack Tuesday night.
A retired Internal Revenue Service employee, Shaffer moved here from Syracuse. Kansas. He was a Navy veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife Georgina, a son Garmer C. Shaffer, 2114 70th, a daughter, Mrs. Orville T. Stewart, 3308...., two brothers Harry of Amarillo and Paul of California; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Dellinger of Liberal, Mrs. Lucinda Morris of Emporia and Miss Ines Shaffer of Denver; four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren."

Lenora Stewart 1919-1999 is buried in Lubbock # 36076890. "Graveside services for Lenora Stewart, 80, of Lubbock will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. Keith Wiseman officiating.
Burial will follow under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
She died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Covenant Lakeside.
She was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Somerville, Massachusetts. She grew up in Syracuse, Kan. She moved to Lubbock in 1935, graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech. She married Orville Stewart on Sept. 3, 1939. He died Sept. 20, 1979. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. "

Mr. Shaffer received his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech. He married the love of his life, Mary E. Broyles, July 7, 1943 in Houston, Texas. He was a faithful... "

Harrison L. Shaffer married Helen K. Wolfe on November 3, 1920, recorded in Denver. They divorced in 1930 in Denver.

In 1930 Denver, Harrison is 40, divorced, president of a bond company.

Helen is living with her widowed mother Eva Wolff 65, in Denver in 1930. She's 30, born in Colorado, with Harrison 8 and Charles B. 2.
Helen and the two boys are in Denver in 1940, and her sister Carolyn Dittus 54 and her son are with them.

In 1940 Pueblo, Colorado, Harrison Lansing Shaffer, 50, born in Colorado, divorced, is living in the Hotel Congress.
He was in Denver in 1935.

Harry died February 14, 1973 in Amarillo, Texas, to be buried in the Llano Cemetery.
