His mother Emily Townsley Cherry was the daugther of Alexander Townsley of Greene County, Ohio, whose 1868 will left his wife Margaret one third. Grandson Samuel Galbreath $300, then equally John H. Townsley, Rachel Mitchell, Esther Wiliamson, Margaret Ann Rogers, James Townsley, Minerva Jackson, Ira Townsley, Claracy Buchanan, Emily Cherry, and Alexander Townsley Sr.
Alexander died in 1870, buried in Greene County # 84500161, with Margaret 1795-1884 # 84500169.

Emily Townsley married James L. "Cheney" on April 11, 1851 in Greene County, Ohio.
In 1860 Washington County, Iowa, James H. Cherry is seven months old, with James L. 33, Emily 30, John A. 6, Granville 2, and Isaac N. Cherry is 22.

In 1880 Washington County, Jas. is 55, Emily 51, "Harry" 20, Bell 17, Frank 13, and Maggie 11.

The 1894 directory of Washington has J.L. Cherry at 604 N. Marion Street, Robert Cherry at 407 N. Marion, and W.W. Cherry at 205 W. Jefferson.

In 1895 Washington County, James Cherry is 71, born in Ohio, with Emily 56, Ohio. James H. Cherry is 38, born in Washington County.

Emily Cherry 1828-1899 is buried in Washington County, # 65122148.
August 18, 1899 "Mrs. James Cherry died at her home, on the Heights, Saturday morning. She had been sick nearly all spring but had been better for some time until a couple of days before her death. Mrs. Cherry was born in Ohio in (1828 to 1830), her maiden name being Emily Townsley. She was married in 1851 to Jas. Cherry and three years later they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near this city. To them were born six children, four of whom, with her husband, survive her. The children are J. H. of this city, Frank of Ohio, Mrs. Combs and Mrs. Carson. She was an earnest Christian and a member of the Second United Presbyterian church. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. Ii. Cogue."

Maggie Cherry, daughter of James L. Cherry and Emily Townsley, married Samuel Carsen on June 14, 1893 in Washington County.

In 1900 Washington County, James L. is widowed, born October 1823 in Ohio, and Harvey J. October 1861 Iowa. Maggie Carson, now widowed, born January 1869 in Iowa, has Sidney Carson March 194 Iowa.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, J.H. Cherry is single, farming, 50, born in Iowa.

James Laughead Cherry 1823-1902 is buried in Washington County, # 65122023.
James claimed two quarters in sections 25, 6S 49W and 30, 6S, 48W in 1917.
