William Melvin Liming was born near the town of Lawrence in Douglas County, Kansas, the son of William Bainbridge and Elma (Smart) Liming. He moved with his brother, George James, to his grandparent's homestead near Kirk in 1906 following his parents separation. George Washington and Hanna Melvina Liming raised these two grandsons.
William enlisted in the Army in October, 1917, and served as a Private in Company C 110th Infantry. He saw service in France and in July, 1918, was wounded and gassed in the Battle of Aragon. After a difficult recuperation, he was discharged from service on May 26th 1919, returning to his grandparents homestead at Kirk.
In November, 1919, he took up a homestead three miles west and three miles south of Kirk, across the road from his brother George's land. Like the vast majority of plains settlers, Bill's first home was a dugout. A simple dwelling, it consisted of three earthen walls that surrounded one small room that was dug into the side of a hill. The roof was covered by either sod or brush, or both. Dusty and dirty with cramped living space, it nevertheless provided temorary shelter from the elements until a sod or wood house could be constructed.
William married Hazel Mertle Hagan on April 6, 1920. They settled on Bill's homestead, where they raised their family and lived until their deaths.
Bill died on April 29, 1973, in Kit Carson Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He had never fully recovered from the effects of the poison gas that he had been exposed to in WWI, and, as a result, suffered from multiple medical problems in his later years.
Funeral services were held at the Liberty School House on May 2nd, attended by his family and a large number of friends and neighbors. Internment was in the Kirk Cemetery.
