Latechia (Gray) (Calkins) Dant, 6 South 47 West
May 20, 1943 "Mrs. Francis Scofield tells us of the marriage of her brother, Corporal Vincent Wickam, to Miss Evelyn Calkins of Goodland, Kansas on March 12. Vincent is now stationed at a camp near Los Angeles, California." Evelyn is buried in Todd County, Minnesota # 109695566. Evelyn V. Cossentine was born on February 6, 1923 in Wray, Colorado to James Henry and Dorothy Alma (McCorkle) Calkins. She lived for a number of years in Goodland, Kansas. Evelyn was united in marriage with Leonard Arthur Cossentine in 1943 in Reno, Nevada. They moved to Eagle Bend in 1944, where, over the years, Evelyn was active in the community as a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Degree of Honor and the Canasta Club. In addition to being a housewife, she enjoyed painting, playing cards, working in her garden and traveling. Evelyn entered the Central Todd County Care Center in Clarissa on October 22, 2003, battling cancer and passed away on November 4, 2003. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy; son David in 2003; brother James Claude Dale Calkins and sister Dorothy Faye Calkins. She is survived by her husband Leonard; sons Leonard A., Jr. of Eagle Bend, Samuel J. and his wife Faye of Eagle Bend and Roger D. of Eagle Bend; daughter-in-law Mary Cossentine; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brother Glenn Calkins of Belleville, KS; sisters Goldie Fowler of Cortez, CO and Genevieve Sponsel of Blairberg, IA; and two great-grandchildren expected in February, the month of her birthday. Pallbearers are Nathan J. Cossentine, Anthony Q. Donovan, Richard M. Gross, Steve Pearson, Michael Willie and Dan Roach. Interment is in the G.A.R. Veteran's Cemetery in Eagle Bend. |
Glendale (Glen) Alexander Calkins was born August 20, 1925 at Vona, Colorado to James and Dorothy (McCorkle) Calkins. He passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Belleville at the age of 84 years. On August 25, 1946, he married Lois M. Wells. Glen was the proud father of four sons: Glen Michael, Richard, Brian, and Kevin. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. In the Navy, he was awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Glen worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Fairbury, Nebraska and Belleville. He also worked for the railroad in Shreveport, Louisiana before retiring in 1987. In Louisiana, his co-workers nicknamed him "The Rock" because of his many years with the Rock Island Railroad. Glen was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters and a brother. He will be forever remembered by his sister Goldie Fowler of Golden, Colorado; wife Lois of Belleville; his sons and their families: Glen Michael and wife Jackie, their sons Glen, Jr. and Joseph all of Pensecola, Florida; Richard and wife Paula of Belleville, their son Troy (Jana) and children Evan Alexander and Julia Claire of Olathe, KS, daughter Angela Sjogren and children Brianna and Samantha of Concordia, KS; Brian and wife Carol of Milford, their daughter Hope (Paul) Bettes and children Autumn and Thomas James of Wichita, KS, daughter Shannon (Will) Brenneisen and son Justin of Arkansas; Kevin and wife Kathy of Belleville and son Shaun (Lars) of Belleville; many other relatives and friends. Glen was active in the Boy Scout program while his sons were growing up and he loved to fish and bowl. He was truly "The Rock" to his sons and grandchildren. He was much loved and will be greatly missed. Memorial services were held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas with Pastor Mark Imel officiating. Family inurnment will be at a time in the future. Memorials may be directed to the City of Belleville for improvements at Rocky Pond. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas was in charge of these arrangements. |
Holyoke Enterprise, Vol XXXIX No. 4, Holyoke, (Phillips county) Colorado, June 23, 1938 Funeral services were conducted at the Church of the Nazarene Thursday afternoon for Clarence Mahlon Shappell, farmer of Yuma county, who ended his life by shooting early Tuesday morning, June 14. The final rites were held at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. R. Worthy Babcock, officiating. Two hymns were sung by Edward Lutze with Mrs. Fred Lutze playing the accompaniments. Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. The pallbearers were Arthur Groseclose, Ed Rowe, William Hays, Ronnie Veal, Otto Krautschun and Rev. Paul Mendel. Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. William F. Williams of Norton, Kans., a sister of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Enyeart and Mr. and Mrs. James Enyeart of Deadwood, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Bud Smith and Mrs. Roy Black of North Platte, Neb., Edward and Noah Enyeart and Mrs. E.E. Calkins of Casper, Wyo. |
