Latechia (Gray) (Calkins) Dant, 6 South 47 West


Latechia Gray was born about 1859 in Scotland, immigrating in 1873-1875.

She married Isreal W. Calkins September 6, 1883 in Fremont County, Iowa. She was the daughter of James Gray and Jane Reed. He was the son of James Calkins and Eliza Gilmore.


In 1885 Fremont County, Iowa, Isreal Calkins is 26, "Latetia" 22, and newborn James H.

In 1900 Cowley County, Kansas, Luman Calkins is farming, born February 1860 in Iowa, with Mary August 1855 Ireland. Thomas L. is 14, Lillie A. 8, Genette M. 5,
Next household is Israel Calkins, June 1858 Iowa, with wife Laticha September 1862 Ireland. James H. born October 1884 , and Eliza April 1890 both born in Iowa, Floid May 1891 Kansas, and brother Charles E. Calkins March 1868 Iowa.

Wednesday, October 28, 1908

Isreal W. Calkins, whose home is seven miles northeast of the city, died very suddenly this morning. Mr. Calkins had been in his usual good health up until the time of his death, which occurred at 8:30 o'clock. He had risen at the usual hour this morning and had gone to the back yard of his home to cut some wood. He did not return to the house in a reasonable length of time and members of the family went to look for him. He was found lying in the yard, but was still breathing at that time. He died,however, in a few moments after being found and did not even as much as speak a word after falling.
Medical attendance was at one called, but Mr. Calkins was dead before the physician arrived at the home. The cause of his death was apoplexy. Mr. Calkins father died in exactly the same manner several years ago. The deceased was 50 years of age and leaves a wife and four children, three sons and one daughter to mourn his death. The daughter is attending school in this city. Mr. Calkins was well acquainted in this city and he was a successful farmer. He and his family have resided on the farm where they now live for a number of years.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed by the members of the family as they desire to hear from a brother of the deceased, who resides in Colorado. The funeral will be announced later. "

August 1910 Kirk items "Miss Lillian Calkins, who has been in Wray the past month, is visiting her mother, Mrs. L. Calkins and sister Jeannette of this visinity this week. She will return to Wray Monday."

October 22, 1913 Arkansas City, Kansas "Jim Calkins of Vona Colorado, is here on a business trip. Mr. Calkins reports the sad news that his mother, Mrs. Latitia Calkins, is at present confined in a hospital at Denver, Colorado, where she recently underwent a surgical operation. He states however that she is improving and will, soon be able to leave the hospital. Mr. Calkins and Mrs. John .Richard's visited with Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rickards one. 'day last week. Mr. Calkins is a brother of the latter Mrs. Rickards."

Latecia proved up 41 acres in section 6, 6 South, 47W in 1926.

In 1917 she proved up 332 acres.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Latechia is 61, Floyd 28, LeRoy 19, Floyd's wife Zella D. 23 born in Kansas.
Next household is James H. Calkins, 34, with wife Dorrie A. 18 born in Kansas, and Genevieve nine months born in Kansas. Guy B. McCorkle 11, Dorrie's brother born i nKanss, is living with them.

"Letitia" Calkins and J. F. "Dent" married Septemer 6, 1922, recorded in Kit Carson County.

In 1930 Kit Carson County, Latichia is 59, married to Johnathan F. Dant 88 born in Pennsylvania.
Jonathan died in 1936 in Cook County, Illinois, and is buried in Athens, Menard County, Illioiis.

Latechia (Grey) Calkins 1862-1936 # 23224170 and Israel William 1858-1908 are buried in Cowley County.


JAMES

1909 Wray "James Calkins, who has been visiting his aunt, Mrs. Calkins, left for Arkansas City Kansas, his former hoe. He will come back to Wray in a few weeks to locate permanently."

1911 Kirk items "James Calkins, Charley Brinkerhoff and Will Barclay will be initiated into the Idonian Grange at the next meeting."

1913 Wray "James Calkins visited with the L. Calkins family of this place over Sunday. He lives near Kirk."

July 24, 1913 "Married - the first of last week - Mr. James Calkins and Miss Eva Sells." (wonder if this wasn't completed...)


James H. Calkins proved up two quarters in sections 12 and 13, 6S 48W in 1917.

James H. Calkins married Dorie Alma McCorkle on November 3, 1917, recorded in Kit Carson County.

Genevieve Elizabeth Calkins was born April 1, 1919 at Esbon, Kansas, dying as Sponsel at death June 9, 2005.
She's buried in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado # 77443519.

In 1930 Goodland, Kansas, James is a mechanic, 45, with Dorothy A. 27. Genevieve is 11, Glendale J. 9, Evelyn D. 9, Glendale E. 4, and Goldie M. 2.

In 1940 Goodland Kansas, James is 56, born in Iowa, Dorothy A. 37 Kansas. James 18, Evelyn N. 16, Claudale A. 14 were born in Colorado, Golde Mae 12 and Dorothey Faye 9 in Kansas.

James Henry Calkins 1884-1954 is buried in Goodland, Kansas # 86027787, with Dorothy 1901-1950.




May 20, 1943 "Mrs. Francis Scofield tells us of the marriage of her brother, Corporal Vincent Wickam, to Miss Evelyn Calkins of Goodland, Kansas on March 12. Vincent is now stationed at a camp near Los Angeles, California."

Evelyn is buried in Todd County, Minnesota # 109695566.

Evelyn V. Cossentine was born on February 6, 1923 in Wray, Colorado to James Henry and Dorothy Alma (McCorkle) Calkins. She lived for a number of years in Goodland, Kansas. Evelyn was united in marriage with Leonard Arthur Cossentine in 1943 in Reno, Nevada. They moved to Eagle Bend in 1944, where, over the years, Evelyn was active in the community as a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Degree of Honor and the Canasta Club. In addition to being a housewife, she enjoyed painting, playing cards, working in her garden and traveling.
Evelyn entered the Central Todd County Care Center in Clarissa on October 22, 2003, battling cancer and passed away on November 4, 2003.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy; son David in 2003; brother James Claude Dale Calkins and sister Dorothy Faye Calkins.

She is survived by her husband Leonard; sons Leonard A., Jr. of Eagle Bend, Samuel J. and his wife Faye of Eagle Bend and Roger D. of Eagle Bend; daughter-in-law Mary Cossentine; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brother Glenn Calkins of Belleville, KS; sisters Goldie Fowler of Cortez, CO and Genevieve Sponsel of Blairberg, IA; and two great-grandchildren expected in February, the month of her birthday.

Pallbearers are Nathan J. Cossentine, Anthony Q. Donovan, Richard M. Gross, Steve Pearson, Michael Willie and Dan Roach. Interment is in the G.A.R. Veteran's Cemetery in Eagle Bend. 


Dorothy Arlene Blades, divorced, born January 26, 1925 at Goodland, married Phil Louis Lescault in Prairie County Montana on May 16, 1949.

Phillip Louis Lescault, born August 5, 1902 in North Dakota, died June 4, 1985 in Los Angeles County.
One tree said Dorothy died about 2007 at Mount Zion, Missouri.

Glendale Alexander Calkins, born August 20, 1925, died June 8, 2010.

Glendale (Glen) Alexander Calkins was born August 20, 1925 at Vona, Colorado to James and Dorothy (McCorkle) Calkins. He passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Belleville at the age of 84 years. On August 25, 1946, he married Lois M. Wells. Glen was the proud father of four sons: Glen Michael, Richard, Brian, and Kevin. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. In the Navy, he was awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Glen worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Fairbury, Nebraska and Belleville. He also worked for the railroad in Shreveport, Louisiana before retiring in 1987. In Louisiana, his co-workers nicknamed him "The Rock" because of his many years with the Rock Island Railroad. Glen was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters and a brother. He will be forever remembered by his sister Goldie Fowler of Golden, Colorado; wife Lois of Belleville; his sons and their families: Glen Michael and wife Jackie, their sons Glen, Jr. and Joseph all of Pensecola, Florida; Richard and wife Paula of Belleville, their son Troy (Jana) and children Evan Alexander and Julia Claire of Olathe, KS, daughter Angela Sjogren and children Brianna and Samantha of Concordia, KS; Brian and wife Carol of Milford, their daughter Hope (Paul) Bettes and children Autumn and Thomas James of Wichita, KS, daughter Shannon (Will) Brenneisen and son Justin of Arkansas; Kevin and wife Kathy of Belleville and son Shaun (Lars) of Belleville; many other relatives and friends. Glen was active in the Boy Scout program while his sons were growing up and he loved to fish and bowl. He was truly "The Rock" to his sons and grandchildren. He was much loved and will be greatly missed. Memorial services were held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas with Pastor Mark Imel officiating. Family inurnment will be at a time in the future. Memorials may be directed to the City of Belleville for improvements at Rocky Pond.

FRANCIS

Francis Leroy Calkins was born March 10, 1904 in Arkansas City to Israel William Calkins and Latechia Gray.

Frances Leroy Calkins, age 21, married Flossie Kibel on May 19, 1924 in Burlington, Colorado.

In 1930 they're in Cowley County, Kansas, Leroy 26, Flossie 22, Althea 4 and Goldie 3 born in Colorado, and Loran 1 in Kansas.
In 1940 Goodland, Kansas, Francis L. is a laborer, 36, with Flossie E. 32. Althea F. is 13, Goldie A. 12, Loran L. 11, Alvina A. 8, and Leonard L. 6.

December 1950 "Mr. and Mrs. Albert Parker visited their daughter, Juanita and family, also a sister, Mrs. Flossie Calkins in Goodland Kansas."



Loran's wife Josephine Calkins was born on March 3, 1935 in Kit Carson County, Colorado to parents John S. Schaal and Rosina Catherina Bauder. She passed away on October 2, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by many lovng relatives & friends. Service is Friday, October 7, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Olinger Highland Mortuary, Thornton, Colorado. Burial to follow service at Olinger Highland Cemetery. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and loved her. She will be forever in our hearts and in our minds. Arrangements under the direction of Olinger Highland Mortuary & Cemetery, Thornton, CO. "
Leonard Leoran Calkisn 1934-2012 is buried in Goodland - Leonard L. Calkins, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012. He was born March 10, 1934, in Goodland to Francis and Flossie Calkins. Preceded by: parents; two sisters, Alvina Sievers and Goldie Davis; and a daughter, Janice Calkins. Survivors: wife; 2 sons; a daughter; a brother; two sisters; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial service: 1 p.m. MT Thursday, Feb. 16, at Bateman Funeral Home, Goodland. There will be no visitation

JOHN (NOT IMMEDIATE FAMILY OF LATECHIA)

John Elmore Calkins was born Sept 2, 1893 at Geneva, Nebraska to Nathienal A. Calkins and Ruth Rathbun.

In 1910 Chase County, Nebraska, Nathania Calkins is 50, Maud B. 20, and John E. 17.

John E. Calkins married Eve Enyart on July 25, 1912.

In 1920 they're in Yuma County, a laborer for the Enyart family. He's 26, Eve 27.

May 27, 1920 "Dr. Ham reports the arrival of a baby girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Calkins 25 miles southwest of Yuma, on Friday, May 21."

In 1930 they're in Lancaster County, Nebraska, John 37, Eve 38, and Vivian 9.

Eva is in Casper, Wyoming in 1940, 48, widowed, living with brother Noah Enyeart and his family.

Eve, born July 3, 1891, died May 19, 1983 in Multnomah County, Oregon.
She's buried in Portland # 158181614. Her parents, William and Ida Enyeart, are buried in Chase County, Nebraska.

So is Noah Enyeart 1902-1980 # 158915159.

Holyoke Enterprise, Vol XXXIX No. 4, Holyoke, (Phillips county) Colorado, June 23, 1938

Funeral services were conducted at the Church of the Nazarene Thursday afternoon for Clarence Mahlon Shappell, farmer of Yuma county, who ended his life by shooting early Tuesday morning, June 14.
The final rites were held at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. R. Worthy Babcock, officiating. Two hymns were sung by Edward Lutze with Mrs. Fred Lutze playing the accompaniments.
Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. The pallbearers were Arthur Groseclose, Ed Rowe, William Hays, Ronnie Veal, Otto Krautschun and Rev. Paul Mendel.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. William F. Williams of Norton, Kans., a sister of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Enyeart and Mr. and Mrs. James Enyeart of Deadwood, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Bud Smith and Mrs. Roy Black of North Platte, Neb., Edward and Noah Enyeart and Mrs. E.E. Calkins of Casper, Wyo.


John died in Los Angeles County July 4, 1977.

Zella Calkins is in the Osawatomie hospital in 1940.
