Garner and Emma (Youmans) Bowers, 6 South 47 West



The history of Warren County, New Jersey includes
"Bowers Foundry, on the Pohatcong Creek, near Brass Castle has been the seat of an important industry conducted by one of the oldest families in the township. Jacob. Bowers came from Germany and settled in Warren County. He had several daughters and two sons, Jacob and Christopher. Jacob, Jr., was born in 1770, and settled on a farm at Bridgeville, New Jersey, where he married a sister of the Rev. George Banghart. The children of Jacob, Jr., were Andrew, Jacob, Garner, Michael B., John C., .and two daughters. One of these children, Michael B. Bowers, learned to manage an iron foundry at Sarepta, New Jersey. He married Hannah Quick, and had two sons, Robert Q. and John. For his second wife he married Mary Hornbaker, and had Sering, Mary and George. Michael B. Bowers carried on a foundry and plow manu factory near Brass Castle from 1829 till 1869. He was succeeded by his son, Sering, and he by his cousin, Robert Q. Bowers, Jr., from Hackettstown. Robert Q. Bowers, a son of Michael B., purchased in 1858 the foundry at Hackettstown. His sons are Michael B. and Robert Q., Jr. "

In 1870 Warren County, New Jersey, Jacob S. Bowers is 32, Margaret 29, John 14, Hannah 12, Garner 8, Andrew 4, and Matilda 58.
In 1880 Warren County, New Jersey, Jacob Bowers is farming 49, Margaret 42 born in England. Garner 18 and Andrew 14 are farm laborers.

Margaret might be the Margaret Bowers dying September 17, 1886 age 48, "Wife of S. P. Bowers" buried in Washington, Warren County # 57704909.

Iva May was born May 12, 1884 in Lawrence Kansas to Garner H. Bowers and Emma Youmans,
In 1885 Douglas County, Kansas, Garner is a laborer, 22, with Emma 25, Ray 2. - and Ivy ten months. Matilda Bowers is 74, and Andrew is 21, farming. Ivy was born in Kansas, the other five in New Jersey.

Matilda died August 11, 1891, age 79, wife of G. H. Bowers, and is buried in Lawrence # 26780276.
She would be the grandmothr of the Kit Carson County Garner.

July 10, 1890 Lawrence, Kansas "Born to Mr. and Mrs. Garner Bowers, a daughter, Monday, at his residence on Indiana street."

November 5, 1891 - Lawrence, Kansas
The remains of Andrew Bowers were brought here and interred in Oak Hill last week. The following account of his sad death is from the Osage Free Press: "A serious accident happened two miles east of Reading last Monday in which Andrew Bowers was accidentally shot by his brother, Garner Bowers. The young men with two companions, G. A. Baker and Frank Lown were on their way from Lawrence, Kansas, to Oklahoma. While packing up after dinner, Garner Bowers was sitting on the spring seat and his brother, Andrew, was sitting on a box in the rear of the wagon, and while Garner was taking the caps off the shot gun, the gun was discharged and the contents entered Andrew a little above the left groin, ranging downward and lodging in the hip. Dr. Morrison was called, after which he was brought to town and taken to the Watson House. Dr. Roup of Lebo, who always happens to be around to render medical assistance, dressed the wound. The wounded man died twenty-six hours later.

In 1900 Douglas County, Kansas, "Eva" born May 1882, is with Garner 36 and Emma 43, brother Ray 17.
Willie is 12, Mable 10, and George 9.

In 1902 Lawrence, Kansas, Garner - a laborer - and Emma live at 383 Walnut. Miss Iva Bowers also lives there, as does Ray, a laborer.
James and John Bowers, both laborers, and Louis C. Bowers, a guard at the state penitentiary, live on Pinckney near Michigan. Joseph Bowers works for B. M. Company, living at 819 N.J..

April 20, 1910 "Mrs. Garner Bowers and daughter Mrs. Mabel Bowers and Mrs. Ray Bowers, with three little daughters, left today to make their home in Stratton, Colo.
Miss Alice Dicker entertained a few friends at ther home on Elm street last night in honor of Miss Mabel Bowers, who left today for Stratton, Colo."

Garner H. Bowers claimed two quarters in section 33, 6S 47W in 1917.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Garner and Emma are farming. Granddaughters Dorothy Rowes 13, Gretchen L. 17 and Mildred 9 are with them, all three born in Kansas.

Garner and Emma are alone in 1930 Kit Carson County.

Garner 1862-1933 # 88023473 and Emma L (Youmans) Bowers 1856-1940 are buried in Stratton.
In 1911 "Bert Bowers" of Burlington was a witness for the claim of Grant Stephenson ifor land in 9S. 44 WSest.
RAY
Bowers, Ray Arlington of Stratton, and Wise, Mamie Aurila -- Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, married 5/10/1917 Burlington Kit Carson County.
Husb: 36 Wife: 36
husband previously married spouse deceased.
Ray A. Bowers claimed two quarters in 33, 6S 47W in 1917.

1918 Lawrence, Kansas "Ray Bowers and Ray Collins spent Saturday in Lawrence."

In 1920 Stratton, Ray - no occupation 38, with Mamie 29 born in Michigan.

Ray and Mamie are farming in 1930 Kit Carson County, no kids.

Ray Bowers 1882-1968 # 75339316 and Mamie A. Bowers 1880-1967 are also buried in Stratton.

WILLIAM

William R. Bowers, 22, married Opal E. Myers, 20 in Lawrence Kansas on December 27, 1908.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, William R. 24 and Opal E. 21 born in Nebraska are farming, married one year.
William R. Bowers claimed two quarters in section 32, 6S 47W in 1917.

In 1918 William R. Bowers of Stratton is treasurer of the District # 62 school board.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, William is 34, born in Kansas, Opal M. 32 Nebraska, Wilford R. 9, Emery N. 8, and Forest E. 3 born in Colorado.

In 1930 they have Wilford 19 and Forest 13.

In 1940 Kit Carson County, William and Opal are alone.

Emery is in Pasadena, California in 1940, a salesman, 28, with Marian 28 born in Nebraska.
In 1962 Pasadena, California, Wm. R. (Opal E.) live at 163 S. Bonnie Avenue.

November 10, 1963 Pasadena "?? Bowers passed away Nov. 9, 1963. She is survived by her husband, William R. Bowers of Pasadena; sons, Emory Bowers of Pasadena and Forrest Bowers of Phoenix. The Rev. Dr. Claude A. Smith will officiate at services 10 a.m. Monday at the Mountain View Mortuary, 2400 No. Fair Oa??s Ave., Altadena."






GEORGE

George Bowers, 23, married Esta Louise Wise in Burlington on December 31, 1917.

George Leland Bowers was born October 13, 1918 at Stratton, dying March 2, 1994.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, George Bowers is farming, 27, born in Kansas, with Etta L. 19 born in Kansas. George 1 ws born in Colorado.

In 1926 Topeka, Kansas, George (Esta) is a foreman for a lumber company, living at 1100 N. Monroe.
Emma C. (Widow Geo W.) lives at 1462 Western. Raymjond B. is a laborer, at 1232 N. Van BUren.

In 1930 George, an auto mechanic, and Esta are in Burlington, with George 11 and Robert 6.

George L. 1918-1994 is buried in Fort Logan, 3 393616.
" GEORGE L. BOWERS 75, of Lakewood died March 23, 1994 in Denver. Services were March 26 in Olinger's Wadsworth Chapel. Burial was in Fort Logan National Cemetery. Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Vona, he married Sylvia Krauth in 1936. She preceded him in death. Mr. Bowers was a graduate of Stratton High School and worked as a stationary engineer for Frontier Airlines, Caterpillar Tractor and the city and county of Denver. He fought with the 27th Infantry during World War II. Survivors include two daughters, Janet Fenton of Wasilla, Ark., and Charaye Mathiesen of Lakewood; a son, George Bowers II of Wheat Ridge; one brother, R.R. of Illinois; and six grandchildren. "

IVA

April 13, 1904 Lawrence "Last night in North Lawrence occurred the wedding of Mr. Ed Fetty and Miss Iva Bowers at the home of the bride's parents. Rev. O. E Deever pronounced the ceremony before forty relatives and friends of the couple. Miss Minnie Browning acted as bridesmaid and Mr. Ray Bowers as best man. The bride wore white silk. After the ceremony a wedding supper was served and the couple departed for their home five miles north of Lawrence. They are both well known in the community in which they have lived and have many friends in Lawrence."

Iva May Camp 1884-1967 is buried in Wheat Ridge # 96904203, with Harry 1894-1984.
