Russell D. Wilcox, 88, passed away following a long illness on July 22, 2016, at Grace Manor Care Center. He was born on November 5, 1927, in Burlington CO to William Wallace Wilcox and Esther Homm Wilcox. Russell grew up with four siblings, Betty Wilcox Bertogli, Dewey Wilcox, Elmer Wilcox and Kenneth Wilcox. He attended Burlington schools from grade school through graduation in 1945. He furthered his education at the University of Colorado for 2 years before returning to join his father’s business as a Standard Oil jobber.
Russell married the love of his life Ruth Eberhart on August 22, 1948, in Burlington. This union was blessed with three daughters, Diana (John) Mauch Burlington CO, Karol (Glen) Adolf of Arvada, CO and Nancy Burke of Denver CO.
Russell was a man of honesty and integrity who worked at a time when a man’s word and a hand shake were the only contract needed. He valued his loyal customers and provided them with a good product and good service. The business became Wilcox Oil and Chemical, Inc. in 1977, and he worked until he retired in 1993. At that time he turned over management of the business to his son-in-law, John Mauch. He was very active in the Burlington community until his health began to fail. He was a long standing member of the United Methodist Church, of which his Grandmother Mary Wilcox was a charter member in 1888. He served on many committees, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and chaired the building renovation in 1971. He was on the Board of Trustees at Kit Carson County Hospital for 15 years (1970-1985). As an active member in the Burlington Rotary Club for over 50 years, Russ was named a Paul Harris Fellow recipient and received the Willard Gross “Service Above Self” award June, 2013. He also enjoyed his work with the Burlington High School Alumni Association for many years.
His greatest joy was his family, followed by his love of all things associated with music. He played both trumpet and baritone in school and community bands. He spent many a Saturday evening playing in the Summer Band on the corner of Main and Senter in front of the Bank of Burlington. That same summer community band played during the rodeos at the Kit Carson County Fair. With his beautiful baritone voice, he participated in community choirs and Rotary variety shows, a Rotary barbershop quartet, the Methodist church choir, and was the song leader at Rotary for many years. He also loved to dance with Ruth and enjoyed many evenings at the Burlington Country Club. He especially loved the music from the Big Band Era. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, boating and water skiing at Bonny, and traveling. He and Ruth enjoyed trips to Russia, England, Austria, France, Spain, Germany, Hawaii, the Caribbean, as well as many states within the US. He also loved watching his children and then his grandchildren as they participated in countless school activities.
Russell is preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings. He outlived and mourned the death of several dear friends. Russell is survived by his beloved wife Ruth, his 3 daughters, 4 grandchildren Torrie (Adam) Pottorff, Brady (Sommer) Haines, Jordan (Ben) Price, Jocelyn (Jesse) Boyd, 7 great grandchildren, as well as many extended family members and friends.
