Kit Carson County Pioneers:

William O. Starkey / Sharkey, 6 South 45 West

William cash-claimed 120 acres in 3, 6 South, 45W in 1891.


Possible - William Starkey in 1850 Chenango County, New York age 33, with parents John 52 and Amy 58, farming.
In 1860 Chenango County, John is 71, Anna 67, Wm. O. 40, both men farming. Warren Hooper is 12, and Julia Hooper is 37.
One history said John Starkey died in 1878, a Smithville, Chenango County, resident.

The W. O. Sharkey in Mountrail County, North Dakota in 1910, age 30, claiming land there, is too young to be the Kit Carson County one, but his father could be a possibity. In 1910 his widowed mother is living with him.
Routt County Colorado 1918 "A. L. Shirkey and family have returned from Yuma county, intending to make their home in this vicinity. For the present, they are stopping at the Barrett home."
Wray Rattler, 1919 "I. A. Sharkey, formerly one of Yuma county's most industrious farmers, came in Monday morning from Pagoda, in Routt county, where he is ranching, to look over his Yuma county ranch. Mr. Shirkey is getting about by the aid of crutches, he recently having suffered a broken leg when a horse fell on him."
Allen Shirkey cash-claimed a quarter in 3, 9S 51W, also in 1891.
He had a record of filing for a timber claim in 10S 50W, but that wasn't completed.
Possibly the Allen Shirkey, born 1845 in Illinois, farming with his father in 1900 Rock Island COunty, Illinois, single.
Allen 1845-1926 # 19011729 is buried in the same cemetery in Reynholds, Rock Island, County.


Leslie Albert Shirkey registerd for WWI in Armel, Colorado, born April 27, 1890 in Ellaston, Illinois, farming, married, with a broken limb.
