MATTIAS

Mathias Schaal married Eva Baltzer November 29, 1891, recorded in Kit Carson COunty.

Mathias proved up a quarter in 34, 6 South, 45W and 2, 7S 45W in 1899.
In 1900 Kit Carson County, Matt born Feb 1867, married nine years to Eva born Dec 1863, both Russia, have Edard Sept 1892, John Sept 1893, Willie 2 and Mary D. two months.
In 1910 Matt and Eva have Edward 17, John 16, Willie 11, Dora 10, Mary 9, Gottleib 4, and Matt 8.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Matthew and Eva are living alone, next to Edward 27, his wife Regina 23, with Reuben F, 1.
Mat is widowed in 1930 Kit Carson County, Gottlieb 28 and Pauline 2 still living with him.
In 1940 Kit Carson County, Matt is 73, married seven years to Margaret 81, both born in "Roumania".

JOHN
In 1900 Kit Carson County, John Schaal born March 1859, married 14 years to Christina Sept 1865, have Margaret Oct 1887, Christian Jan 1889 South Dakotha, John April 1891, Emil Nov 1892, and William Feb 1895, these three born in COlorado.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, John Schaal is 51, married 24 years to Christina 44, both born in Russia. John 20, Emil 17, Willie 15, and August 5 were born in Colorado.

John 1859-1945 is buried in Bethune # 118830568 "John Schaal was born on March 23, 1859 at Teplitz, Bessarabia, Russia to Johannes and Maria Barbara (Kehrer) Schaal. He married Christenia Wagner in March of 1885. Together they had seven children. "
Jake Schaal 1897-1986 # 106180596 is buried in Bethune, Elizabeth (Gramm) Schaal 1893-1920, and then marrying Emma Magdalena (Strobel ) Schaal in 1921,.

Funeral service for Mrs. Jake Schaal was held at the German Congregational church, Settlement, Sunday afternoon. The church was overflowed by those who came to pay their last respects. Mrs. Schaal was an exceptionally fine Christian character. She also took an active part in all her church activities. As soon as the accident occurred she realized she had to die, for she saw how charred her body was; however, she had no fear of death and repeated passages of scripture and prayed an asked the Lord to take her home soon. She admonished her two boys, Ted, 14 and Herbert, 7. She was very much concerned about her mother and father and how they would feel when they got the news. They had just left for a visit in California a few days before.
Mrs. Jake Schaal, (Emma M.) was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Strobel, and born at Yale, Colorado, August 10, 1896, where she lived with her parents until 1921, when she was married to Jake Schaal. She has lived in this community all her life.
On Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 13th, while attempting to light the kitchen range, using tractor fuel, the can exploded and she was fatally burned and passed away at 9:45 that evening at the age of 40 years, 2 months and 3 days. She is survived by her husband, two sons, her parents and four brothers, all residents of the Settlement except her oldest brother Rev. Theodore Strobel, of Laurel, Mont. All were at the funeral, besides a host of other friends and relatives.

Final rites for John S. Schaal were Wednesday; July 3, 1985; at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Burlington with Rev. Neil Warner officiating. The organist was Virginia Flatt and the soloist was Bob Hendricks. Song selections were "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I am Thine, Oh, Lord". Casket bearers were Douglas Schaal, Barry Calkins, Garry Calkins, Kerry Calkins, Clinton Schahrer and Larry Schaal. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington with Hendricks Mortary [sic] in charge of arrangements.
John S. Schaal was born to Sam and Rosina (Schmidke) Schaal on Feb. 27, 1898, north of Bethune. He passed away June 30, 1985 at the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital at the age of 87. John was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, later becoming a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church. John was united in marriage to Rosina Bauder at the Methodist parsonage in Burlington on Feb. 4, 1928. To this union was born three sons and four daughters. John farmed in the Burlington area near the Smoky Hill and Emerson schools from his youth till the fall of 1969, when he retired, at which time they moved to their present home in Burlington.
He was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence, two grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. John is survived by his wife and children, Rudolf of Burlington; Beulah Schahrer of Burlington; Ruby Munson of Tucson, Ariz.; Josephine Calkins of Denver; Elmer of Martinez, Calif.; and Wilma Sanchez of Burlington. Also by 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jake and Sam, two sisters, Helen Knodel and Dorothy Schlichenmayer, all of Burlington; and many other relatives and friends.

Samuel Schaal married Rosina Schmidke in November 1895, recorded in Kit Carson County.
Rosina Schaal 1877-1898 is buried in Bethune # 118830826 "Mother of Jake & John."
He married Dorothea Bauder January 15, 1899, recorded in Kit Carson County.

In 1900 Kit Carson County, Samuel Schaal born Aug 1871, married five years to Dora Sept 1880, both Russia, have Jacob Jan 1897, John Feb 1898, and Samuel Nov 1899, all three born in COlorado.

Samuel claimed a tract o fland in section 4, 7S 45W in 1902.

In 1910 Samuel, 39, married twice, with Dora 30, have Jacob 13, DJohn 12, Samurl 10, Fred 8, Helen 6, and Carl 3.
