Final rites for John S. Schaal were Wednesday; July 3, 1985; at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Burlington with Rev. Neil Warner officiating. The organist was Virginia Flatt and the soloist was Bob Hendricks. Song selections were "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I am Thine, Oh, Lord". Casket bearers were Douglas Schaal, Barry Calkins, Garry Calkins, Kerry Calkins, Clinton Schahrer and Larry Schaal. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington with Hendricks Mortary [sic] in charge of arrangements. John S. Schaal was born to Sam and Rosina (Schmidke) Schaal on Feb. 27, 1898, north of Bethune. He passed away June 30, 1985 at the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital at the age of 87. John was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, later becoming a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church. John was united in marriage to Rosina Bauder at the Methodist parsonage in Burlington on Feb. 4, 1928. To this union was born three sons and four daughters. John farmed in the Burlington area near the Smoky Hill and Emerson schools from his youth till the fall of 1969, when he retired, at which time they moved to their present home in Burlington. He was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence, two grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. John is survived by his wife and children, Rudolf of Burlington; Beulah Schahrer of Burlington; Ruby Munson of Tucson, Ariz.; Josephine Calkins of Denver; Elmer of Martinez, Calif.; and Wilma Sanchez of Burlington. Also by 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jake and Sam, two sisters, Helen Knodel and Dorothy Schlichenmayer, all of Burlington; and many other relatives and friends.
