Charles A. Bortles, 6 South 45 West

Charles Andrew Bortles was born on 16 April 1854 Pennline, PA. He was the son of Charles Andrew Bortles and Abagiel Holman.
One tree said Charles married Ella Vincent in 1888 in Nebraska, and they had Lynell in 1891.
Charles A. Bortles, age 34, married Ella S. Vincent age 19, in Council B luffs, Iowa December 28, 1888.

Elma Bortles McIntosh, age 34, daughter of Charles Bortles and Ella Vincent, married Samuel E. Tidd in Countil Bluffs December 18, 1924.
(In 1930 Pottawattamie County, Elma is 40, with Samuel E. 40, living iwth Clarence E. McIntosh 23 and his family. Vergie McIntosh, Clarence's sistere, 19 is also with them.
Elma Evelyn Tidd 1890-1964 is buried in Polk County, Oregon # 28855175.
Clarence McIntosh 1906-1985 # 30542387 and Pearl are buried in Marion County,k Oregon.
In 1900 Pierce County, Nebraska, Charles Bortles born Mar 1854 in Pennsylvania, married six years to Louisa Aug 1866 Germany, with Louisa's daughters Martha Geratis 13 and Irma 11 and Freda 8. His sons Roy Bartles 4, Alvin E. 3, and Laverne eleven months were born in Nebraska.
Louise is divorced in 1910 Pierce County, with Freda 18, Elvin 13, Lavern 11, and Elopa 7.

Charles proved up two quarters in 24, 6S 45W in 1913. Clarence Bortles had an entry, but it wasn't completed.


In 1920 Kit Carson County, Chas. A. 65 and Rosa 48 are still farming.

Roy Andrew Bortles, born in Pierce County, Nebraska to Charles Bortles and Louise Yost, married Ida Wingert in Bronson Iowa March 31, 1928. He was 22, Ida was 23.
They're with her father Jacob Wingart in 1930, and in 1940 Woodbury County, Iowa they have Jane 5 and Alice five months.
In 1957 they're in Sioux City, Iowa, where he's a custodian for the drive-in theater.
"Roy A. Bortles, 84, Sioux City, died Saturday (April 12.1980) at Indian Hills care center, following a long illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran church with Rev. Kenneth Fischer officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery.
There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the W. Harry Christy funeral home in Morningside.
Mr. Bortles was born on Sept. 21, 1895, at Plainview, Neb. He moved to Bronson where he married Ida A. Wingert on March 31, 1928. He lived in the Lawton and Bronson area until about 1965.
He farmed and worked at Jolly Time Popcorn until his health forced his retirement. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran church.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Darvin (Jane) Petersen of LeMars and Mrs. Bill (Alice) Ross of Bronson; a sister, Mrs. Freida Deter of Mitchell. S.D,; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. "

"Darvin and Jane Petersen, of Le Mars, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary Dec. 1, 2012. They will celebrate with a private family gathering. Darwin Petersen and the former Jane Bortles were married Dec. 1, 1952, at Dakota City, Neb. Their children are Roger and Rosie Petersen, of Le Mars, Carol and Jeff Bunjes, of Alta, Connie and Bill Klohs, of Le Mars, and Charlotte and Jeff Langel, of Okoboji. They have 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. "

Jane Louise Bortles was born March 27, 1935, in Sioux City, to Roy and Ida (Wingert) Bortles. She was baptized at Wesley United Methodist Church, in Sioux City, and later confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church, in Sioux City"

Avis Irene Bortles Gordon, 86, died of cancer Nov. 27, 2006, at home in Anchorage. Mrs. Gordon was born Feb. 7, 1920, to Lynel and Eva Bortles in Logan County, Colo., on the family farm. Her early years were spent on farms in Colorado. She graduated from high school in Cedaredge, Colo., in 1937. She lived in several states before moving to Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1949. "

In 1910 Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Lynel is a farm labore, 18, with Eva and Ira four months.

Born in December 1909 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bortles moved to northeastern Colorado in 1917. He attended the Curtiss Wright Flying School in Denver, Colorado, soloing in October 1929, in a Challenger Fledgling, with Ray Wilson his instructor. Receiving a limited commercial pilot rating in April 1930, Ira barnstormed in a Hisso Eaglerock. He then flew with the Clinesmith Flying Circus in South Dakota and Minnesota in a Challenger Robin during the summer of 1931. In 1932 he barnstormed in Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas in his Robin.

1930 Haxtun "Ira Bortles of South Rockland, a licensed pilot, escaped injury when the wind caught his plane when landing and it stood on its tail."

Mildred Leone Bortles was born on 6 February 1917 Oakland, Pottawattamie Co., IA. She was the daughter of Lynel Bortles and Eva Margaret Vallier. Marriage 2*: Mildred Leone Bortles married 2nd, Ezra Lue Craig, son of Augustus G. Craig and Almedia A. Posey, on 27 March 1941 Monticello, San Juan Co., UT. Death*: Mildred Leone Bortles died on 16 June 1987 Grand Junction, Mesa Co., CO, at age 70. Burial*: She was buried at Roselawn Cemetery, Pueblo, Pueblo Co., CO.
