"Lydia Applegate was born on 2 Jun 1827. Lydia married Marcus Pickering November 1, 1847 "

In 1860 Highland, Ohio, J. Applegiate is a painter, J. J. Jr. is a school teacher, and Judge Applegate is a tailor. Mr. and Mrs. J. Pickering are school teachers.

H.M. Pickering is in Ohio in 1860, 37, with Lydia 35, Mary R. 12, Corbet 10, Wm. Wall 8, Henry 6, Namon 5, Sarah L. 3, Charles 2, and his mother Mary 67.
(Marry Edgington, born about 1847 in Brown County, Ohio to Mark Pickering and "Lida" Applegate, married Isaac Edgington and died Dec 27, 1921 in Brown County.)

"Mark" Pickering is widowed in 1870 Pike County, 46. Henry L. 17, Naaman 15, Sarah L. 13 and Charles 12 are with them.
In 1879 Cass County, Nebraska, "Marcus" Pickering is 54, born in Ohio, living with the Applegate family. This might be his brother-in-law...
Jacob Dawson is in Otoe County, Nebraska in 1860, 42, with Edith J. 36, both born in Ohio. John H. 11 Pennsylvania, Wiliam R. 8, Iowa, and Albert P. 3. Nebraska.
Jacob Dawson had died in Nebraska in 1869, leaving his wife Editha J. his lots in Lincoln. She sold them in 1871. On December 14, 1879, Editha J. Dawson married Henry M. Pickering.
"The first court of record was held in the cabin of Jacob Dawson, near the site of the St. Charles hotel, by Judge Elemer Dundy in November 1864.
Jacob Dawson was postmaster in Lincoln in 1868, and he satees that he and several others donated the town site to the state. In August q1867 there were for or five house in teh town o f Lancaster now comprised in the city of Lincoln.
Several Nebraska histories say Dawson County was named after him. Jacob Dawson 1816-1869 is buried in Lincoln, wife Editha J. Ross.

Elisha ROSS. I believe he was born in the 1790s but don't know where. Later censuses of the children note their father was born Ohio.
He married Casander/Cassandra FIGGINS 10 Nov 1819, Bracken County, KY; Casander was from there.
They had the following children in Ohio, most likely Brown County:

On the 2d day of August, 1867, Jacob Dawson and Editha J., his wife, by deed, containing covenant or warranty, conveyed to the State of Nebraska all those certain pieces or parcels of land situated in the County of Lancaster, and State of Nebraska, known and described as the west half of the southwest quarter of section No. 25 and east half of section No. 26. in township No. 10 north of range No. 6 east of the sixth principal meridian according to the Government survey, containing 400 acres,' which tracts of land now comprise part of the townsite of Lincoln"

Editha was again going by DAWSON by 1885.
There is an 1891 marriage license for "Mrs. Editha DAWSON" and her widowed BiL, Moses Hampton HATHAWAY; the license was not returned so there is no way to tell if a marriage took place.
Editha is alive in 1895 when her brother's (Hartford ROSS) Iowa obituary notes he is survived by a sister
Per one tree, Editha Jane 1826-1895 is buried in Lincoln, Wyuka Cemetery "Sec. 5, Lot #123 (former husband at sp-7)"

Minerva died July 1869 in Lancaster County, Nebraska, per the mortality schedule for 1870.

Minerva (Ross) Hathaway is buried in Lincoln 1830-1870, and Moses Hampton Hathaway 1830-1904 is buried in Elbert, Colorado # 126005415.
"According to a family story told to Susan by Virginia, the widow of her second cousin, Moses' body was pulled up the hill to the cemetery in a wagon and William's wife was too pregnant to walk up the hill for the burial. Her baby was born ten days after Moses' death. This story had also helped Susan and Virginia pinpoint the date of Moses' death, which family information had given as 1903. But knowing the baby was born in 1904, Susan believed Moses had actually died in 1904."

2022 "I've since found an obituary and information from a very helpful researcher that Moses did die in 1903, not 1904. I'd come up with 1904 as Virginia said the baby was born in February ten days after Moses' death. Ten days later in February would make it leap year and 1904."

In 1900 Seward County, Nebraska, Moses Hathaway is 69, with son William 32 Florence 34, and their daughter Mable 1.

Rodman B. Hathaway 1857-1905 is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elbert County

Joseph Hathaway died Nov 21, 1908 at the home of his brother L.D. Hathaway two miles west of Elizabeth, and was buried in Denver Fairmounty Cemetery.


In 1880 Cass County, Nebraska, there's a Clements Pickering, 18, born in Ohio, with Henry M. Pickering, 55, a farmer and Editha J. 50, both born in Ohio. With them is stepson William Dawson, 26, born in Ohio, and his wife, and son, Malida C. 16Dawson 16, and Minnie S. Dawson, both born in Nebraska.
In 1885 Cass County, H. M. Pickering is 55, E. J. 52, both born in Ohio. The Dawsons are still with them, and then is Clement, 15.
Henry M. Pickering cash-claimed 161 acres in Wheeler County, Nebraska township 23N 11W.

1902 "Clement Pickering of Union was adjudged insane for the asylum, and weas taken there from Plattsmouth by Sheriff J.D. McBride."
Clement proved up two quarters 13 and 24, 6S 44W in 1914.
In 1920 Clem Pickering is a hired man for L.W. and Nellie M. Shaaw. He's 59 born in Iowa.

Beloit Kansas, July 24, 1920
"Han J. J. Slightam, of Stockton, found a gruesome sight last Saturday, when he followed to its source a horrible smell that emanated from the upper floor of his store building. He discovered the badly decomposed body of a harvester, named Clem Pickering, who had been rooming there, but who was supposed to be out in the harvest field, not having been seen since the previous Wednesday. The man was fully dressed lying on a couch with a revolver in one hand. A coroner's Jury gave as its verdict that he came to his death from causes unknown but not by violent or criminal means. "

NAMPA — Services for Sanford Irvin Pickering, 71, Nampa, who died June 4, 1976, in a Nampa hospital after a long illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alsip Chapel by the Rev. Leo W. Reed, First Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in the Building of Reverence in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. He was born April 12, 1905, at Lodgepole, Neb. He was reared and attended schools in Koenig, Colo.
He married Ruth Louise Gaugler Oct. 18, 1928, at Brighton, Colo. They lived in Dillon, Mont., from 1949 to 1956, when they moved to Glenns Ferry. They moved to Nampa in 1958 where they had since resided. Mr. Pickering worked as a road master for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1922 until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Nampa Lodge No. 30 Order of the Eastern Star, Nampa Lodge No. 29 AF&FM, York Rite Masons, and the El Korah Temple, Boise.
Surviving are his wife, Nampa, two daughters, Mrs. Earnest (Eunice) Brethauer and Mrs. Darwin (Phyllis) Phillips, both Nampa; a son, James D., Reno, Nev.; two brothers, Albert R., Denver, and Gein M., Broomfield, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Violet McCleary, Denver, and Mrs. Pearl Jeffers, Johnstown, Colo., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and two brothers. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
